Level Minds - Helping Tackle Mental Illness Head On
Level Minds is the brainchild of the not for profit organization, Couee Community. We are a group of people who wanted to tackle the issue of adults, youth and children suffering from PTSD, other forms of anxiety, and mental health illness.
We have come to Kickstarter to ask for help with the development of a Level Minds Mindfulness app for Apple and Android. Once complete, the app will provide valuable mental health support for people in the community who need a helping hand,
One in five Australians has suffered some form of mental health disorder. Anxiety is the most common mental illness, but affective disorders, including depression, are not far behind.
All of us involved with Level Minds - Stuart, John, and Campo - have in some way been affected by PTSD or Mental Illness whether it be personally or via a family member.
The problem is that mental illness is stigmatised. Many people don’t seek help because they fear a negative response from family, friends, and colleagues. Not enough is being done to tackle mental illness in the community. People are suffering and resources available to help victims and their families are few and far between.
Who We Are and What We Do
With the growing need for help in this area, our not for profit organization, Couee Community, has decided to dedicate all its resources to providing support and education for adults, youth, and children suffering from PTSD and other forms of anxiety.
We have already made great progress towards our goals. The Level Minds website is online right now if you want to check it out: www.levelminds.org.au. It provides useful information and resources for sufferers and loved ones. We also run Level Minds regional groups, who meet weekly for sporting and other fitness activities, and we offer a designated counsellor for extra support of group members.
The Level Minds Website
The Level Minds website is the first point of contact for many people looking for help and information online. The website offers useful information and resources for:
People suffering from PTSD or other anxiety disorders
Loved ones of those suffering PTSD or other anxiety disorders
People suffering from mental health issues
Loved ones caring for someone with mental health issues
It is our goal to develop the website to be interactive with “Mindfulness” techniques available that will guide the person through mindfulness techniques to assist them to get out from the “dark cloud” and move forward.
Weekly Level Minds Activity Groups
In time, we also hope to start regional groups throughout Australia to host sports and other weekly activities, to encourage physical activity, social interaction and support our members. Each group will have a designated counsellor, whom members can contact directly when in need of extra support.
We currently have a group on the Gold Coast, which meets weekly. The model for the Gold Coast group will be the blueprint for the other groups to follow.
Each group will be run by a volunteer who organizes the weekly event and maintains the regional groups Facebook page.
Level Minds App
The app is the third phase of our tiered support program. The Level Minds app will bring together the information from the website and combine it with an interactive mindfulness application. This application will allow users to access support for practicing mindfulness, day or night, and when on the go.
We believe Mindfulness is a powerful tool for someone suffering from PTSD, other forms of anxiety, and mental health illness. Most anxiety or feelings of self-harm happen at times when there is nobody available to talk to. It is not uncommon for people with mental health issues to feel completely alone, even when surrounded by a room full of people.
The mindfulness app will guide the person through mindfulness techniques to help them to get out from under the “dark cloud” and move forward. Most of us rely on technology for everything, so it makes sense that people will be comfortable using an app to help them through difficult moments like this.
Risks and challenges
Level Minds is run by the community, for the community. We are completely funded by donations from the public. We rely on the kind generosity of people like you to help us help other people in need. We will continue to be funded through donations, once everything we want to achieve is fully operational.
Level Minds needs to be grown at a pace that is manageable and we will use volunteers as much as possible when operating regional support groups.
