We are so excited that we reached our goal and now we are looking to reach our stretch goals to take our film to the next level!

Our new goal: $25,000

Here's how we'll use the additional funds:

A central focus of our film is combat-veteran Bobby Lane, whose PTSD nearly drove him to suicide before he found peace through surfing. Bobby lives in Texas. We really want to spend time with Bobby filming in his hometown because that will add a lot of context to his story.

We didn’t think we’d have the resources to go to Texas, but thanks to you all, we’re now close to making this a possibility. We estimate that it will cost $5,000 at a minimum to travel to Texas for a week with our team of 4 and with all of our gear -- so let’s get the resources to go to Texas to film with Bobby!

CHECK OUT OUR NEW REWARDS:

1) San Francisco Giants Tickets: 2 tickets to spend the afternoon with 2 of us in the most incredibly seats you've sat in at AT&T Park (3 rows behind homeplate!) See the rewards on the right side of the page for more details.

2) Handcrafted Handboards and Skateboard: CA Coastal Woodcraft has provided two gorgeously crafted wooden handboards and a rad skateboard.  The artistry on these is top notch, but they also perform really well.

3) More Autographed Copies of the Book Blue Mind: The first batch of autographed copies of Blue Mind went fast! No surprise because the book is a great read! Dr. Wallace J. Nichols has generously donated additional autographed copies of his NY Times Best-seller -- so act fast before they all disappear again.

Resurface is a documentary about military veterans who use surf therapy to cope with PTSD and transform their lives.  It is the next documentary from the award-winning filmmaking team that made Slomo, a NY Times Op-Doc and winner of a dozen jury and audience awards, including SXSW, AFI Docs, and Sheffield Doc Festival.

We are making this film because 1 in 3 combat troops report symptoms of PTSD, and only about 40% seek help. With your help, we hope this film raises awareness about this critical issue and inspires Veterans, or frankly anyone else, suffering from physical and psychological difficulties to seek out the therapeutic benefits of being in and around water.

Your donation will help pay for the additional filming we have left to do and for the film's post-production work!

What Is This Film About?

While on tour in Iraq as a U.S. Marine Corps infantryman, Bobby Lane suffered two traumatic brain injuries when his platoon was hit by 5 roadside bombs in 11 days. Upon returning home, he suffered from PTSD and sleepless nights filled with nightmares. It got so bad that he planned to kill himself. But first he wanted to cross a final item off his bucket list: surfing.

Bobby traveled from Texas to California for a week of surfing with Operation Surf. Bobby's time in the water saved his life. His plan had been to commit suicide upon returning to Texas, but he says that surfing brought him newfound peace. He explains:

"Now I see it, if life gets too hard, there's always the ocean."

How Can Surfing Change Lives?

This film explores the answer to that question. More and more research has demonstrated the healing power of surfing on the brain and body. Organizations like the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, Operation Surf and Surf Action are now acting on this research, turning to ocean therapy to help active duty Marines and Vets like Bobby cope with physical and mental trauma. Resurface focuses on these Vets and explores how surfing and the ocean are helping them heal.

Why Teach Veterans to Surf?

Surf therapy sessions give Veterans an opportunity to learn to surf in a safe and supportive environment. The intense focus and strenuous work required to surf allows individuals to take their minds off life's stresses and be completely engaged in the moment. Overcoming the challenges (and often fear) of being in the ocean leaves Veterans with a renewed sense of self-efficacy and confidence. One Vet shared:

"If I just learned to surf, what else can I do?"

Central to our film is the work being done by the Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation ("JMMF") and Operation Surf, two nonprofits that provide Veterans with surf therapy sessions. These organizations deserve a lot of credit for implementing this innovative treatment. Your support of our film will go a long way in highlighting the great work of groups like JMMF, Operation Surf and Surf Action to ensure they continue to get the support they need to carry on their heroic efforts.

So while surfing will by no means cure PTSD, ongoing research shows that it helps alleviate the symptoms of PTSD and provides combat Vets with a healthy outlet to replace the adrenaline and action of combat.

Why Back A Film About Vets And Surf Therapy?

1 in 3 combat Veterans report symptoms of PTSD, and only about 40% seek help. By supporting this film, you will be helping spread the word about the therapeutic benefits of the ocean. This is a relatively new treatment for PTSD and we hope this film increases awareness about surf therapy.

By backing this project, you can play a role in inspiring Veterans, or frankly anyone else, suffering from physical and psychological difficulties to seek out opportunities for rehabilitation through whatever programs are available to them.

And ultimately, on a grand scale, we need your help to use the power of film to demonstrate the growing body of evidence for something many who spend time in and around the water already know intuitively: surfing, and the ocean, are curative.

Who We Are

We are a group of San Francisco-based documentary filmmakers. Collectively, our work has screened all over the world, from Australia to Brazil to Israel. We’ve been featured on PBS, The Discovery Channel, National Geographic, BET, Belgian National TV, and in a number of film festivals, including the SXSW Film Festival and the AFI Docs Film Festival. Our commercial clients have included Stanford University, Adobe, Nokia, Foot Locker, and TED.

Our core production team consists of:

Josh Izenberg
Co-Director

Josh Izenberg is a documentary film director based in San Francisco. His most recent film, SLOMO, was featured on the New York Times, was short-listed for an Academy Award, and was the recipient of the prestigious International Documentary Association award for Best Short Documentary, as well as notable awards from SXSW, Sheffield/Docfest and AFI/Docs. He’s also worked on commercial documentaries for clients on topics covering auto design, green energy, and race car driving.

Wynn Padula
Co-Director

Wynn Padula is most recently known for serving as Director of Photography on the documentary SLOMO, which was shortlisted for an Oscar. Wynn has also been the Director of Photography on hundreds of TV episodes, commercials and web videos for clients ranging from the Discovery Channel to Adobe. Wynn received his M.F.A. in Directing and Cinematography from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television in 2007, where he had the opportunity to learn from some of the world's top cinematographers including Roger Deakins and Janusz Kaminski.

In addition to working as a Cinematographer in Los Angeles, Wynn also worked in film development for the legendary producer Roger Corman and again at NBC Universal Studios. After graduate school, Wynn taught as a Visiting Professor at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following this position, Wynn moved to San Francisco and started Fast + Light Productions, where he serves as the owner and Principal DP with fellow DP Owen Bissell.

In addition to Cinematography, Wynn has also directed many films including "Lynx" (Best Short Film, Wild & Scenic Film Festival), "Rainbow Klansmen" (Mill Valley Film Festival) and “The Breeze Team” (2nd Place winner, Canadian International Film Festival).

Scott Stillman
Producer

Scott Stillman produced and edited Two Hours to Tyler, a documentary on the juvenile death penalty that screened at film festivals and aired nationally on the Black Entertainment Television (BET) network.  Scott also spent two years working in the production department at GMMB, a national political-media consulting firm headquartered in Washington, DC.

Owen Bissell
Director of Photography

Owen recently completed a two part PBS series “Animal R&R”, and has been a part of several recent National Geographic natural history productions including the Emmy Award winning “Untamed Americas”. He worked as Producer and Director of Photography on Animal Planet’s “The Bear Whisperer Returns”, and has shot and produced many commercial projects for Williams-Sonoma, 24 Hour Fitness, Adobe, and others. He is currently in production on a documentary about the Colorado River in Mexico. In 2005, Owen earned an M.F.A. in Science and Natural History Filmmaking from Montana State University. In 2010, Owen co-founded Fast + Light Productions with Wynn Padula.

We have also received the generous help of Eric Alexander-Hughes (editor of the trailer), Andrew Quinn (surfing camera and drone operator), Zachary Hill (surfing camera operator), Steve Byrne (camera operator), and Mike Williams, Conor Grebel, Stormy Pyeatte, and Peter Clark -- who were instrumental in helping us shoot really cool surfing broll and water shots.

How Will Your Donation Be Used?

Your donation will help pay for the additional filming we have left to do and for the film's post-production work:

We still have a few more Veterans to interview and we also need to film them out in the water surfing. We need to travel to LA to make that happen and the costs of multiple trips with our crew and gear add up quickly. Your support of our project will mean we will finally have the funds to complete all the filming for the documentary.

Once we've done all the filming, your donation will help us with our post-production work (often the most expensive part of the process). We have to hire an editor to assist us in putting all of the footage together. Then there's creating the score for the film, performing the color correction, and possibly animations too. All that can cost a significant amount, which is why your support will be so meaningful.

Finally, your donation will be used to make sure we can get the film seen by as many people as possible. If we reach our funding goal with your help, we will enter the film into film festivals. But more importantly, we also hope to screen the film for free at various Veterans organizations and VA hospitals in order to inform other Veterans about ocean therapy. Your donations have the power to let others know about this valuable form of therapy.

Risks and challenges

We have now filmed the majority of the interviews, surfing footage and ocean shots that we need. But a couple key interviews with Veterans still need to be filmed. Lining up our schedules with the Vets' schedules can be tough but we're committed to filming these final interviews. They will add a lot to the documentary. With your help, we'll have the funding to travel back to LA to film again with the Vets we've been speaking to.

Once we've finished filming, we need to hire a skilled editor to help cut together the great footage we've gotten. A good editor makes all the difference in the world, but comes at a cost. We don't want to have to cut any corners at this stage and with your assistance, we won't have to.

We are passionate about making the best film that can be made, and it's crucial that we stay afloat financially as costs stack up. We are focused on getting this film out as a means to raise awareness about surf therapy and to help others. Simply put, we cannot make this film happen without your contribution. Thank you for your support!
