Mecanika is a physics-based puzzle game. The goal: light up as many stars as possible along a path by guiding small scouts correctly. In order to succeed, you have at your disposal a series of robots that are able to modify the scouts’ trajectory.

The game is fun while also being an efficient tool to stimulate learning. Without realizing it, you will understand why objects around you move as they do. As you do so, you will discover the laws of Newtonian physics, which so many students struggle to master. Experiments ran by the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) have shown the impact of the game on students' progress. And the results are impressive! Indeed, classes that used Mecanika attained a level of conceptual understanding that is four to five times the level of those who learned the subject through traditional teaching. A first version of Mecanika has been available online for free since 2011 on the island of Physica, inside the GAME FOR SCIENCE virtual world. A demo is also available in French. We are currently working on a new version of Mecanika, which will be available on tablets, both Android and iOS. We are also taking this opportunity to revamp the entire game. Important coding work is required if we want to improve the game's design and ergonomics.

The reason for creating Mecanika is simple: school dropout rates are reaching worrisome heights. The lack of interest is particularly pronounced in science, although science is really fun and scientific culture is an essential key to economic and social development. This is especially true considering the 21st century skills students now need to grow with. Unfortunately, the current educational system doesn’t do a good job of interesting students in that field.

On the other hand, young people tend to play more and more video games. Indeed, 97% of the 12-to-17-years-olds are gamers! It seems only logical to show them how science can present interesting challenges  through video games.

Mecanika is based on 30 years of research in the didactics of science and aims to make complicated concepts accessible. Rather than teaching formulas, this game allows anyone to immediately jump into it by experimenting and visualizing the effects of forces in space. Moreover, the gameplay is designed to surprise and challenge the students' initial understanding of mechanical physics, promoting comprehension above all else.

Mecanika was initially designed to support the use of physics in class for students aged from 15 to 17. In our playtests though, we found the game  to be quite intriguing for younger players and adults.

Mecanika is the fruit of a collaboration between the CREO Montreal game studio and the Lab Mécas of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). The game design is by François Boucher-Genesse, former game designer on Halo 3

The collaboration with CREO grew naturally to secure the game production. CREO makes and distributes groundbreaking multi-platform science popularization tools. The goal: stimulate young people’s interest in the sciences and technologies and help its partners develop their education, communication, and marketing activities. In 2009, with the joint effort of many partners, including the Canada Media Fund, CREO launched GAME FOR SCIENCE, a virtual world designed to make the 9-to-17-years-olds discover science, where the first version of Mecanika was distributed.

Mécanika est un puzzle game basé sur la physique. Le but du jeu : allumer le maximum d’étoiles le long d’un parcours en guidant correctement de petits éclaireurs. Pour réussir, vous avez à votre disposition une série de robots capables de modifier la trajectoire des éclaireurs.

Le jeu est amusant tout en étant efficace pour stimuler l’apprentissage. Sans vous en rendre compte, vous allez enfin comprendre les lois de la physique newtonienne, ces notions que tant d’élèves ont du mal à maîtriser. Des expériences conduites par l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) ont montré l’impact du jeu sur la progression des élèves. Et les résultats sont impressionnants ! En effet, les  classes qui ont utilisé Mécanika ont progressé quatre à cinq fois plus que celles qui ont appris la matière par apprentissage traditionnel. Lire l’article de recherche.

Une première version gratuite de Mécanika est déjà en ligne depuis 2011 sur l’île Physica de SCIENCE EN JEU. Une démo est aussi accessible. Aujourd’hui nous travaillons sur une nouvelle version de Mécanika, qui sera disponible sur tablettes Android et iOS. À l'occasion de ce portage sur tablette, nous revoyons l'intégralité du jeu. Un travail important de programmation est nécessaire si l'on veut améliorer le design et l'ergonomie du jeu.

Le constat qui a poussé à la création de Mécanika est simple : le décrochage scolaire atteint des sommets inquiétants. Le désintérêt est particulièrement marqué en sciences. Pourtant, la culture scientifique est une clé essentielle au développement économique et social, notamment pour faire face aux enjeux du 21e siècle. Or, le système éducatif actuel ne semble pas réussir à suffisamment encourager les jeunes à aller vers les sciences.

D’un autre côté, les jeunes jouent de plus en plus aux jeux vidéos. Eh oui, 97% des 12 à 17 ans s’y collent ! Alors quoi de mieux pour les intéresser aux sciences que de passer par le jeu vidéo ?

Mécanika se base sur 30 ans de recherches en didactique des sciences et a pour vocation de rendre accessibles des concepts compliqués. Plutôt que d’enseigner des formules, le jeu permet tout de suite d’entrer dans l’action, en proposant d’expérimenter et de visualiser l’effet des forces dans l’espace. De plus, le gameplay est conçu pour mettre à l’épreuve les conceptions initiales des élèves afin de les faire évoluer pour favoriser une meilleure compréhension.  

Même si Mécanika a été initialement conçu pour soutenir l'utilisation de la physique en classe pour des élèves de 15-17 ans, le jeu est aussi captivant pour des plus jeunes et des adultes.

Risks and challenges

Be assured, Mecanika already exists online and a tablet version will definitely come out if this project is funded. Our goal : Finalize the adaptation of the mobile version by September 2014. If delays were to occur, we make the commitment to deliver the project before summer 2015, whatever the delays may be !

Rassurez-vous, le jeu Mécanika existant déjà en ligne, une version pour tablette verra le jour à coup sûr si le projet est financé. Notre objectif : finaliser l’adaptation du jeu Mécanika pour les tablettes en septembre 2014. Si des délais venaient à s’ajouter, nous nous engageons, quoi qu’il en soit, à livrer le projet avant l’été 2015!
