About this project
HotBot is a new take on scrolling shoot ‘em ups, which has been re-imagined in an exhilarating 3D perspective!
You’ll guide T0NY across an action-filled robot world as he tries to escape his creators who will be hot on his tail until the very end! The game makes use of a unique, random level-generation system which creates the world as you play. This means that your gameplay experience will be different each and every time! In order to keep you on your toes and mix up the gameplay you’ll come across obstacles and traps along your path which you must avoid or interact with in order to survive!
Hotbot will feature a ‘reactive gameplay’ experience. The game will primarily be played in a third-person, 3D perspective, but will also include a rich 2.5D view if the action calls for it. This really brings out the old school feel of the game and also provides you with an alternative view of your environment to further enhance the immersion.
The movement through the world will differ in each perspective, and we have worked hard on finding the perfect balance and seamless transition between these two views. We can’t wait for players to test this out and enjoy the experience we envision!
The game will include multiple enemy classes, all of which alter T0NY directly or affect his environment in different ways, resulting in a much more challenging and fun experience.
You can also customise T0NY’s weapons, power-ups, skin and tweak his overall appearance to make him as unique as you wish.
The game will initially be released on PC and Mac, then later ported to Linux, even tablets and mobile devices! We want everyone to enjoy HotBot, no matter which platform they own. Pushing it to different platforms will require more time and testing, so just bear with us because we are working on it.
We’re old-school gamers at heart and often reminisce about the memories we have of spending countless hours battling with classic arcade shoot ‘em ups. These are the experiences that really stand out for us and now we feel that its time to bring them back. What we liked about these games was that they were simple yet fun. All you had to do was start the game and you were instantly part of the action. With HotBot, our goal is to capture the fun and addictive elements of those games whilst maintaining the same experience, but this time in a much more attractive, engaging and immersive world.
With regards to the influences that the game was drawn from, we have taken inspiration from a number of our favourite classic old-school shooters. These include (going clockwise below); Ranger X, Star Fox, Space Harrier, Raiden X, Air Wing Carrier and the Contra series, to name a few.
Another thing we love is story-telling. Most shoot ‘em ups neglect any form of story and simply focus on the action alone. In HotBot we’ve taken the time to construct a character that has a quirky, playful, okay... maybe even stupid side but with all the complexities to make you laugh and cry at the same time. Our take on characters is simple, create someone who you would generally consider insignificant and make their triumphs, and yours, feel absolutely epic.
So we created a robot called T0NY, one of the many clones designed to be the ultimate fighting machine. T0NY and his kind were originally built to fight in a war, but a glitch during their creation meant that they developed some ‘interesting’ personality traits. So, even though still equipped with the latest arsenal of weapons and propulsion technology, they no longer possessed the right temperament for combat. Therefore, the failed project was scrapped and the robots were destined for termination.
So in HotBot, you play as one of the clones on his way to be incinerated. It’s your job as the ‘chosen one’ to escape your creators and find a way to save your kind from extinction.
When thinking about what we’d like to include in this project, many aspects had to be considered. We really wanted to maintain the feel of old school shooters, yet capture all of the ideas that we felt would enhance the experience of the game even further.
We soon realised that in order to be able to implement these features and concepts, a huge amount of production time would be required. Being an old-school shooter on the PC amongst the more popular genres of today, means that finding the funding to help complete the game is not a simple task. We’re very passionate about HotBot and we think that everyone will enjoy playing it. Thus, we turned to Kickstarter!
Kickstarter offers us many advantages, it provides an insight into how our game will be received by you and what changes we may need to make prior to launch. It also allows us to gain the required funding for our project whilst keeping creative control. Not to mention the invaluable general comments and suggestions offered by everyone!
If we manage to reach $75k we can continue to complete the game with its core elements intact. Anything that we receive in addition to this will be put straight back into further game development. This really is a humble amount as the production costs for a game of this scale are usually higher. At Ink Vial Games we love what we do, and so we’re only asking for ‘just enough’ to get the project complete with all its awesomeness intact. We want to produce an addictive, fun and polished product that we can all be proud of and that you can enjoy for a long time!
We would also ask our generous backers to help us achieve our stretch goals and raise the funds required to implement even more great features.
We have some great rewards to offer our backers. As well as getting the DRM-free copy of the game, they range from Digital and Physical goods (such as T-Shirts, Posters and Artbooks) to the Higher Tier rewards. These will give backers the chance to have a say on the content of the game!

Ink Vial Games is an independent game studio established less than a year ago. We are comprised of a team of four based in London with a strong passion for creating games that deliver unique, fun and memorable experiences. Working in such a small team affords us many benefits; firstly, it allows us to form and develop our ideas freely and with no additional pressure. It also means that we are able to put exactly what we want into the game, even if it includes butterflies and dancing jellyfish! Most of all however, it means that our drive for making great games is allowed to flourish unhindered, and hopefully this is evident when you play them.
Now to meet the hard-working guys at Ink Vial Games!
Stephen Rebeiro (Artist/3D Animator/Designer) Steve has been developing games for the last 6 years, mostly in 3D social games and mobile games, he has worked as everything from an animator, lead artist, environment designer, game designer, plus he sometimes does the coding if need arises, but you have to tempt him with a cup of tea.

Risks and challenges
Once we receive the funding for HotBot, we are very confident that we will be able to complete the game the way we intend it to be. That being said, we know that there will be a number of challenges that we may come up against. While we are currently on-track to meet our release schedule, there can occasionally be changes that need to be made, or bugs that need to be ironed out before release. Another of our concerns is that during our beta-testing phase, something fundamental to the game is flagged and needs to be modified to enhance the play experience. We are being quite ambitious with HotBot and know that sometimes not everything will fall exactly into place. However, as is the nature of game development, there can be occasions when things can veer slightly off course and so contingencies do need to be put into place.
With this in mind, we are aware of the scope of these potential obstacles and are constantly trying to think one step ahead in order to make HotBot the best game it can be for all that play it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The game will be launched for PC & Mac for our initial release, then later ported to Linux, Ouya (we will confirm this soon), even tablets and mobile devices. Keep following our updates for news.
We’re hoping to finish the game by April 2013 and have it shipped to all of you by then. We will be sure to keep you updated with the progress of the game! For news on the development of HotBot feel free to follow our Twitter account.
Launching the game on Linux is something we’ve been asked about, but the engine that we’re using (Unity) doesn’t yet support it. However, Unity version 4 which is set to be released this fall will have support for Linux and we will definitely be looking into it once the update is released.
We’re working on getting the game on as many platforms as possible so we’re definitely looking into releasing the game on Ouya.
Yes! We fully support DRM-free goods and thus we will definitely have a DRM-free standalone version of the game for PC, Mac & Linux.
If you don’t have a credit card you can purchase a Ukash voucher, then convert that into a Ukash NEO prepaid Mastercard which can be used with Amazon’s payment system.
There are no extra shipping costs involved wherever you are in the world. Once you pledge, you don't pay anything else to receive your rewards.
