About this project
Medici: The Card Game is a new game design by Reiner Knizia that shares the setting and feel of his classic Medici board game, without using that game's auction mechanisms.
Set in 15th century Florence, players will try to acquire the most valuable goods for their merchant ships by drawing cards from a common deck. It is a set-collection card game with some push-your-luck elements. It is very easy to teach, learn and play.
Medici: The Card Game is for 2-6 players ages 10 and up and takes 30 minutes, or so, to play.
After re-releasing Medici the board game earlier this year, Grail Games is very pleased to be bringing you this terrific new card game - the first to be added to the Medici family of games since Strozzi, released in 2008!
Set in 15th century Florence, players will try to acquire the most valuable goods for their merchant ships by drawing 1-3 cards from a common deck each turn.
After drawing, the active player MUST take the final card they drew and may also select one or both of the previous two cards drawn (if available). They then load these commodity cards on their boat. Cards that are not taken remain available to future players. Once a player's boat is full (seven cards with two players, five cards with 3-6 players), they are out of the round and the day is scored.
Players score points for the value of their ships' holds, but also for the number of commodities of each type that they have stored in their warehouse. The highest earning merchant over three days wins the game.

Every copy of Medici: The Card Game will include the following components...
The cards will be 59x91mm and the box will have a two-piece, sturdy cardboard design.
AND any stretch goals we reach will also be included in your copy!
Should we be lucky enough to over-fund this project, we will be able to afford the following upgrades to the components! Thank you for your support!
Hooray! Thanks for helping make this game a reality!
Should we reach this over-funding target, the cards will be increased in quality to 310gsm Ivorycore card stock!
Another upgrade is on the cards! Reaching this goal will allow us to use linen-finish card stock, giving the game an even higher level of quality and beauty!
Reaching this target provides the funds to increase the quality of the cardboard coins. The punch boards will now be a chunkier 2mm thick.
Nice! This goal will replace the game box's cardboard insert with a plastic one to hold all the game's pieces snugly inside.
Thanks everyone for your continued support! Now we can afford to make the game's box have a slick glossy look and a linen finish - matching the quality of what's inside!
If we reach this target, instead of a double-sided player aid card, each player will have two cards to remind them of how each round is scored. This adds 6 cards to the game. Probably the best thing about this is we get to add an extra piece of Vincent Dutrait artwork to the game (on the reverse of each card - see update #4 for more info!)
Another coin upgrade is on the way! Reaching this goal will allow us to print the punch board coins with metallic ink! Shiny and more special, they will look more realistic!
Medici: The Card Game is a compact, streamlined game that packs a punch. It is not a game that more content will be added to, but should our funding level rise, we will be able to announce more stretch goals in the future!
By supporting Medici: The Card Game on Kickstarter, not only are you helping us to produce the game in the first place, but you are ensuring that:
- You will receive your copy of of the game at, or below, retail cost -considering worldwide shipping is included! (MSRP will be in the $20-22USD range.)
- You will receive your copy at least a few weeks prior to the game being made available at online and bricks & mortar game stores.
- Your support will make the game better! More stretch goals means more components and a better quality.
Note: Grail Games runs "no-frills" Kickstarter campaigns without promotional extras that increase costs and time-frames. We intend to get a high-quality product to your door as quickly as possible. All our campaigns thus far have delivered on time or earlier.
Thank you for your tremendous support!
Well... yes and no. Worldwide shipping is certainly not free! However, we are happy to swallow this cost if it will mean getting this great little game into your hands! Your pledge includes shipment to you, no matter where you live.
Unfortunately, in order to keep shipping costs low, we are not able to include lots of promo items, etc., with our Kickstarter campaigns.
Backers who pledge at backer levels that include copies of our other titles will receive these soon after the close of the campaign. Medici: The Card Game is due to be sent to you in April, 2017 (hopefully before!)
Yes! Medici: The Card Game will be sent to EU backers from within the EU!
Also: Medici will be sent to Australian backers from within Australia, and Jeju Island will be sent to North American backers from within the USA!
All backers (pledging at the ON BOARD level or above) may add extra copies of the game to the pledge for $23AUD per copy. To do so, select "Manage Your Pledge" and manually increase your pledge total.
Backers who pledge at either of the ROUND THE ISLAND, or MEDICI LOT levels may add on copies of Jeju Island for $38AUD per copy. Please note this is only for backers at those levels.
Dr. Reiner Knizia is one of the world’s most successful and prolific game designers. More than 600 of his games and books have been published worldwide in over 50 languages. With sales exceeding 20 million copies, he has also won numerous international awards.
Vincent Dutrait is currently one of the most highly regarded illustrators of board and card games in the world. His use of traditional illustration methods and media, as well as his bright style and attention to detail have earned him worldwide praise.
After working with us on Medici, we are so glad that Vincent returned to make the card game version so beautiful. Here is a sample of his work from the game...
Medici is considered a classic auction game. First released in 1995, Grail Games was pleased to bring an all-new English edition to print this year.
Featuring beautiful art and simple, yet clever, game play, Medici is for 2-6 players and takes about an hour.

Note: We can only ship this game to USA, Canada (shipped in April) and Australia (shipped in November) during this campaign. All other backers should look out for it at their favorite online or local game store.
Grail Games has recently published the English language edition of Jeju Island. Originally from Korea, this game takes place on Jeju - the famous tourist destination.
A family game that combines a mancala mechanism with card collecting, its quirky and charming look and big fun-factor should be a hit.

Risks and challenges
Grail Games has already produced nine games, all currently available in game stores around the world. Since our first Kickstarter campaign was received EARLY by backers in January 2015, we have continued to send high quality products to backers on time! We have our systems well in place and use a top manufacturer to produce and ship quality games around the world. Grail Games is beginning to forge a track record of delivering fun games with quality components… on time!
However, unforseen circumstances can hold up a project. This can happen at the point of manufacture or during shipment. Grail Games has given a time-frame for delivery of Medici: The Card Game that we believe is certainly achievable. If anything does affect the project, backers will be kept in the loop via regular backer updates at every step of the production and shipment process.
Note that the currency conversions in the pledge level blurbs are a guide only. Currency values may fluctuate during the campaign.
Also note: Pledge levels do include all shipping costs, and backers will receive their games before retail stores, but Grail Games cannot guarantee that retailers will not sell Medici: The Card Game at a cheaper price than Kickstarter supporters will “pay.”
Finally, Grail Games will happily send replacement copies of any game damaged in shipment to backers, etc., but if backers fail to inform Grail Games of a change in shipping address or similar, backers may be asked to pay extra costs for a replacement copy of the game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
