King's Road is a simple to learn area-majority board game, full of meaty decisions for gamers. In it, players are nobles who are attempting to gain power and influence within the king's many provinces. As the king travels along the road that connects all the major landmarks within his territory, he will allow the most influential noble in each region to govern in his stead. Over time, the most favored noble will win the game.
Each player has identical decks of eleven cards. On a turn, players simultaneously select the three cards they will play, and in what order. To win, players not only have to influence the king as he traverses the land, but attempt to read the minds of their opponents.
King's Road re-implements the game Imperium, previously only available within game compendiums, and not published for 16 years. It is for 2-5 players, aged 10 and up, and takes about 30 minutes to play.
On a turn, players secretly and simultaneously select three of their eleven cards to play, and in what order.
After selecting their cards, players reveal their choices one at a time.
If they have revealed a Region card, the player must place one Influence marker of their color on the corresponding region on the board. After the round, these cards are returned to the player’s hand.
If one of the Special cards are revealed, the game is affected in other ways...
The Knight must be the final card played in a round. When revealed, the player may add an Influence marker to the Region card that was directly above it. (That region will therefore gain a second Influence marker that round.) After the round, this card is returned to the player’s hand.
If the Dragon is revealed, the number of Regions scored this round is increased by one. The effects are cumulative, therefore, if two players play Dragon cards in the same round, then a total of three regions will be scored that round. This card is removed from the game after use.
The Witch must be revealed first. After it is revealed, the player places the remaining two unrevealed cards below it into their hand. They will then re-select and reveal their three cards again, after all other players have finished revealing and resolving their cards. The Witch is removed from the game after its use.
Then scoring occurs. To score, players count the number of Influence markers for each player in the region that the King marker is currently in. Points are awarded to players equal to the values listed on the banner depicted in each region. The player with the most Influence markers is awarded points equal to the highest number listed for the Region, the second placed player receives the next amount, and so on. However, the number of players able to score in a Region is limited to a maximum of one fewer than the number of players in the game.
When a single player has the highest Influence in a Region when it is scored, they leave one of their markers on the region, face-up, to indicate that it is the Noble governing that Region in the King’s stead.
When a player places a Noble, he or she scores one bonus point for this Noble, and one additional bonus point for each adjacent Region (following the roads on the board) where he or she has a Noble.
Once Scoring is completed, the King marker is moved to the next Region in number order.
The game ends at the end of a round when both of these conditions are met: 1: At least one player has 40 or more points, and, 2: Only one players has the most points. Then there is a final scoring and a winner announced!
Full-color rule book coming soon!
Note: Playing with more players (the game takes up to 5) does not increase play time much as play is simultaneous. It does create a game with more opportunities to score, etc, however.
Each backer will receive the following in their copy of King's Road...
- 1 game board (360x360mm)
- 1 rule book (180x180mm)
- 75 wooden player pieces - 15 per player (15x15x10mm discs)
- 55 cards - 11 per player (63x88mm)
- 1 King token (15x15x40mm cylinder)
- All in a 2-piece cardboard box (200x200x50mm), containing a cardboard insert and zip-loc bags.
...unless we meet the following stretch goals :D
Should we be lucky enough to over-fund this project, we will be able to afford the following upgrades to the components! Thank you for your support!
Hooray, we made it! Thanks for helping make this game a reality!
Printing an individual crest on each player's sets of tokens (and the King token) will increase the visibility of each piece on the board. These will be printed in black on one side of every counter so players may decide to ignore them or to use them as per their preference. This is not only to ensure players with color-blindness can better recognise the pieces, but also to make nobles more obvious! Designs to be confirmed soon!
Here ye! Here ye! The King has grown ... for some reason ... and is now a chunkier token that will be more dominating on the board and easier to pick up and place! (20x20mm round and 50mm tall)
Should we reach this over-funding target, the cards will be increased in quality to 310gsm Ivorycore card stock!
Thanks everyone for your continued support! Now we can afford to print the cards on a linen finish card stock AND give the game's box a slick glossy look and a linen finish - matching the quality of what's inside!
Reaching this goal, we will add 5 more player tokens in each of the five colors so you should never run out!
Wow! If we can make this target we will have the funds to enlarge the game box and board! Yes - the box will be enlarged from 20cm square to 25cm square, and the game board will increase in size from 36cm square to 46cm square! More room to breath, expand and enjoy!
Great news! Now the King pawn will look more kingly - he's not just a straight cylinder anymore!! More news soon, as we have unlocked this right at the end of the campaign - thank you!!
➼ King's Road is a compact, streamlined game that packs a punch. It is not a game that more content will be added to during this campaign, but should our funding level rise, we will be able to announce more stretch goals in the future!

Q: Is shipping for this game actually free?!
Well... yes and no. Worldwide shipping is certainly not free! However, we are happy to swallow this cost if it will mean getting this great game into your hands! Your pledge includes shipment to you, no matter where you live.
Unfortunately, in order to keep shipping costs low, we are not able to include lots of promo items, etc., with our Kickstarter campaigns.
Backers who pledge at backer levels that include copies of our other titles will receive these soon after the close of the campaign. King's Road is due to be sent to you in August, 2017 (hopefully before!)
Yes! King's Road will be sent to EU backers from within the EU!
Add-on games will be sent to you from the US or Australia - whichever is closer :)
Dr. Reiner Knizia is one of the world’s most successful and prolific game designers. More than 600 of his games and books have been published worldwide in over 50 languages. With sales exceeding 20 million copies, he has also won numerous international awards.
Grail Games has already published two other Knizia games: Medici and Circus Flohcati, with Medici: The Card Game on its way. We are so excited to have the opportunity to bring you this new addition to our line!
Vincent Dutrait is currently one of the most highly regarded illustrators of board and card games in the world. His use of traditional illustration methods and media, as well as his bright style and attention to detail have earned him worldwide praise.
After working with us on Medici, we are so glad that Vincent returned to make King's Road the visual feast that it is. Here is another look at his work from the game...
Medici is considered a classic auction game. First released in 1995, Grail Games was pleased to bring an all-new English edition to print last year. Featuring beautiful art and simple, yet clever, game play, Medici is for 2-6 players and takes about an hour.
Note: We can only ship this game to Australia (shipped in April) during this campaign. All other backers should look out for it at their favorite online or local game store.
Medici: The Card Game is a new, sister game to the classic Medici. Surprisingly, it feels like Medici, without any auctions! A fun and fast set-collection game by Knizia and Dutrait. This game is coming soon from Grail Games!
Note: This game is due to ship to King's Road backers in May. It will ship from the EU for EU backers.
Circus Flohcati was (like King's Road) designed by Reiner Knizia. Originally released in 1998. Grail Games has released an all-new edition of this fun, push-your-luck card game. Can you collect all the acts required to put on a stellar flea circus? With art by Heiko Günther, this new edition is visually striking!
Note: We can only ship (in April) this game to the US, Canada and Australia during this campaign.
Grail Games has recently published the English language edition of Jeju Island. Originally from Korea, this game takes place on Jeju - the famous tourist destination.
A family game that combines a mancala mechanism with card collecting, it has a quirky (and charming) look!
Note: We can only ship this game to the US, Canada and Australia during this campaign (shipped in April.) All other backers should look out for it at their favorite online or local game store.

Risks and challenges
Grail Games has already produced eleven games, all currently available in game stores around the world. Since our first Kickstarter campaign was received EARLY by backers in January 2015, we have continued to send high quality products to backers on time! We have our systems well in place and use a top manufacturer to produce and ship quality games around the world. Grail Games is beginning to forge a track record of delivering fun games with quality components… on time!
However, unforseen circumstances can hold up a project. This can happen at the point of manufacture or during shipment. Grail Games has given a time-frame for delivery of King's Road that we believe is certainly achievable. If anything does affect the project, backers will be kept in the loop via regular backer updates at every step of the production and shipment process.
Note that the currency conversions in the pledge level blurbs are a guide only. Currency values may fluctuate during the campaign.
Also note: Pledge levels do include all shipping costs, and backers will receive their games before retail stores, but Grail Games cannot guarantee that retailers will not sell King's Road at a cheaper price than Kickstarter supporters will “pay.”
Finally, Grail Games will happily send replacement copies of any game damaged in shipment to backers, etc., but if backers fail to inform Grail Games of a change in shipping address or similar, backers may be asked to pay extra costs for a replacement copy of the game.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
