About this project
WOW! We hit our goal in less than 24 hours. We can't quite believe it.
10K - WE GET TO HIRE A PHOTOGRAPHER
We have a photographer we'd like to bring to Indonesia. His name is Gabe. He's a massive dreamboat. He shot the excellent convict themed portrait series from our 2015 residency. If we hit 10K we can afford to pay Gabe to come take photos.
14K - FEE WAIVER FOR AUTHORS
We work hard to make our project affordable for our participants but we do charge them a $300 fee for the two weeks. This covers about half of our food and accommodation budget. The rest we make up in grants and donations. If we hit $14000 we'll waiver the fee and make the residency free for all of our authors.
STRETCH REWARD#1 - if we hit $14K we'll mail all supporters who donated $20 or more a postcard from our studio in Indonesia.
20K - FLIGHT SUBSIDY FOR AUTHORS
We're all paying for our own flights to indonesia but if we hit $20k each participant will get a $400 subsidy to help with travel costs. For most of us that will be around half of our flight expenses.
STRETCH REWARD #2- If we hit $20K We'll upgrade that postcard to a limited run screen printed post-card made on-site at Krack Studio.
Comic Art Workshop is a two-week residency for authors of ambitious comic books. Fifteen artists take fifteen half-finished graphic novels and we go away for fifteen days to work out how to make our good books into better books. Our residency is a space for skill sharing, criticism and high-level literary workshopping, one designed especially for graphic storytellers. When we’re there our goal is to solve the creative problems that we need to solve so that we can get our books finished and into your bookstore.
Here's a mini-documentary from our residency in 2015 which was a huge success.
So, this year it's happening again, but in 2017 we're going to run the retreat at Krack studio in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It's going to be amazing.
Our artists are experienced cartoonists who are looking to level-up their practice. Some have published books already. Others are working on their first major books.
One thing we all share is the pain and isolation of working alone on a big project for years. It’s the cartoonists’ lot. That’s why we started this residency.
You can read more about our authors and the projects they are working on here on our webpage.
Hang on... Did we mention that two of our comic art heroes are coming along?
We usually invite some international authors to come along as mentors. This year we’ve invited Sonny Liew from Singapore and Sarah Glidden from the US. Both have published New York Times bestsellers and are swaddled with awards and accolades. Sonny Liew just won three Eisners. Three!
HERE'S THE RUB
Running a residency is expensive and we try to keep costs down for the artists. We have applied for several grants and we got one, but we’re still $7000 short of a shoestring budget. The basics are already sorted. We’ve got food and accommodation covered and all of our artists are paying for their own flights. What we’re asking for is the extra money we need to pay for our workspace at Krack Studio and to help with the costs of getting Sonny Liew and Sarah Glidden to Indonesia. Do you reckon you could chuck in?
WHY HELP US?
The short answer is this: fifteen new graphic novels.
When you donate to this campaign you will be ensuring that fifteen authors get the support they need to finish their ambitious projects. Fifteen authors will level-up their practice. Fifteen authors will become part of an enduring support network. Fifteen graphic novels will one day arrive in your bookstore, books that might not exist without your support.
Also, we’ve got heaps of great swag and personalised commmisions to send you if you support us.

Risks and challenges
The risks are low on this one. The Residency is locked in. Accommodation is sorted. We've booked our flights. We're all scrambling to get our manuscripts ready for each other to read. All we need now is that extra bit of cash to get our mentors to Indonesia to make the experience all the more special.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
