About this project
Did you miss us? We missed you!
Mau, Taylor, Rodrigo, and I are proud to present (for the second time) the Destiny’s Fate Kickstarter. Our goal is still to produce Destiny’s Fate #3 with rewardsincluding Destiny’s Fate #1 and #2. Our target is set at $1,500, which will pay for the remaining coloring/lettering of Destiny’s Fate #2 and part of the pencilling for Issue #3.
UPDATE! Issue #1 and Issue #2 are now completed! Issue #3 is in the wings once I find Mau snacks. That's how we roll, peeps.
We have reached the target goal for this round of the Kickstarter (THANK YOU, EVERYONE!), so let's bring on the stretch incentives, huh? If we double our goal and make $3,000, not only will the Issue #3 be funded, but everyone who pledged $15.00 and up and and is receiving hard copies, will get a Destiny's Fate pin-up!
Let's do this, peeps!
Tempt Fate! Destiny’s Fate is a self-published miniseries that asks, "What choices do we make in our lives, or are all decisions controlled by a force unbeknownst to us?" KAINOA RYDER is DESTINY, the physical manifestation of a future created by choice, unlike FATE, a future based upon a predetermined outcome. The story chronicles the struggle of Kainoa, a time-traveling assassin who returns home after seven years to fulfill his fate—to kill the defenders of time.
On board is an amazing team—a storyboard artist, a comic studio owner, a former Marvel Bullpen freelancer, and me (Devin Leigh Michaels-writer/geek girl). Click for an low-res, eight-page preview of Destiny’s Fate #1 and a rough, low-res eight-page preview of Destiny’s Fate #2!
Fate cannot be changed, KAINOA RYDER’s adoptive parents told him. There is a plan, a preordained chain of events no one can alter. If someone tried, the consequences would be grave, for he/she would be rebelling against the laws of time itself. The Ryders know. As DEFENDERS OF THE FOURTH DIMENSION, they protect all of time’s events.
Kainoa only remembers his adoptive parents’ words as lies. Stolen by his grandfather—the former head of the Defenders—and raised in Medieval Japan, Kainoa has harnessed the gift of destiny, the ability to travel through time. Where others need the help of a device called an ANCHRON to change time periods, Kainoa only needs a single thought, and where the Defenders protect time, he can rule it.
But the thoughts in his mind are anything but his own. An assassin who obeys without thought, who kills without guilt, fifteen-year-old Kainoa has been given one mission—to infiltrate, to assimilate, and to annihilate the Defenders of the Fourth Dimension—his family. This is his FATE, one even he, the bearer of destiny, can’t escape.
The seven-issue series chronicles Kainoa’s return from his time with grandfather to his home in twenty-first century New Jersey as he attempts assimilation with the Ryders. The first issue was released on August 29th, and the second will be available in late October, with a book every two months. Each book will be twenty-four pages, a twenty-two-page chapter and a two-page trailer teasing the next issue.
A GEEK GIRL, THE DARK LORD OF PANDAS, A CLERK-DONE-GOOD, AND A NINJA!
Devin Leigh Michaels is the writer and creator of Destiny’s Fate. She’s a former DC Comics intern and has been an avid reader of comics for seventeen years. A former professional writing tutor, she has been published in America’s Got Stories and writes press releases as the publicity relation representative for IC Geeks Publishing. When she’s not geeking out, she loads and proofs contracts for Flight Centre, USA, the parent company of Liberty Travel and GoGo Worldwide Vacations. She resides in New Jersey and lives on green tea fraps (non-fat, no whip). @DevinLMichaels
Mauricio Vargas-Martinez is the artist for Destiny’s Fate. He’s a storyboard artist who has worked on several commercials for companies such as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Snickers, Milky Way, and Cricket, for the Latin American and American markets. He also has worked for advertising directors in Europe, Canada, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, and the United States. He resides in Mexico. @122476
Rodrigo Tobias Eyzaguirre is the colorist of Destiny’s Fate and has been a comic book store clerk, a production assistant, and a professional illustrator, the last for ten years. His focus is publicity work doing storyboards, commercial illustrations, and character designs. He also publishes illustrations in Mexican magazines such as Big Bang and Discovery Kids of Editorial Televisa. In 2008 he was the art director and penciller of Angel Caido Cronicas, a comic book miniseries related to the Mexican film Angel Caido before becoming the art director for LHSM Studio, an animation company in Mexico. His own studio, Graphic Leak (www.graphicleak.com.mx), launched in June and offers commercial illustration and animation, including comics.
Taylor Esposito is the letterer for Destiny’s Fate, and works as a graphic designer and production artist. Destined to be a comic geek, Taylor studied graphic design in college, then worked for Marvel in the digital comics department. Eventually, he settled into a position in the Bullpen, doing production work, logo design, and typesetting. He currently works as a production manager when he’s not lettering comics. Some of his works include (as letterer) Samhain Night, Watson and Holmes (for New Paradigm Studios), and (as production artist) such Marvel titles as Amazing Spider-Man, Deadpool Team Up, and Invincible Iron Man. He is also a second degree black belt and lives happily with his wife in New Jersey. @TaylorEspo
WE WANT TO WORK WITH YOU!
SO WHY ARE YOU KICKSTARTING THIS AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY HARD-EARNED MONEY?
Because making comics is expensive and though Mau loves snacks, he doesn’t take payment in the form of them. Also, Taylor letters for food but only in years ending in odd numbers.
I funded all of Destiny’s Fate #1 and most of #2 and launched the original Kickstarter to fund Destiny’s Fate #3 and #4, using Destiny’s Fate #1 and #2 for rewards. Since we only raised USD3,500 last time, my team and I are aiming low but reaching high. If we make this Kickstarter’s goal of USD1,500.00, the rest of Destiny’s Fate #2's coloring and lettering and some of Destiny's Fate #3 pencilling and inking will be funded. Hopefully, I can launch another Kickstarter at the end of October with rewards geared toward Destiny’s Fate #3.
Every backer will receive:
* A tweet from @DevinLMichaels, thanking him/her for his/her generous donation
* Your name printed in a limited edition of issue three
* If DF reaches more than 300 backers—a special gift!
Are you ready to tempt fate?
