About this project
DESTINY’S FATE—WHAT THE—?
Tempt Fate! Destiny’s Fate is a self-published miniseries that asks, "What choices do we make in our lives, or are all decisions controlled by a force unbeknownst to us?" KAINOA RYDER is DESTINY, the physical manifestation of a future created by choice, unlike FATE, a future based upon a predetermined outcome. The story chronicles the struggle of Kainoa, a time-traveling assassin who returns home after seven years to fulfill his fate—to kill the defenders of time.
On board is an amazing team—a storyboard artist, a comic studio owner, a former Marvel Bullpen freelancer, and me (Devin Leigh Michaels-writer/geek girl). Check below for a preview and more about the project! Click HERE for an extended, high-res, eight-page preview!
Fate cannot be changed, KAINOA RYDER’s adoptive parents told him. There is a plan, a preordained chain of events no one can alter. If someone tried, the consequences would be grave, for he/she would be rebelling against the laws of time itself. The Ryders know. As DEFENDERS OF THE FOURTH DIMENSION, they protect all of time’s events.
Kainoa only remembers his adoptive parents’ words as lies. Stolen by his grandfather—the former head of the Defenders—and raised in Medieval Japan, Kainoa has harnessed the gift of destiny, the ability to travel through time. Where others need the help of a device called an ANCHRON to change time periods, Kainoa only needs a single thought, and where the Defenders protect time, he can rule it.
But the thoughts in his mind are anything but his own. An assassin who obeys without thought, who kills without guilt, fifteen-year-old Kainoa has been given one mission—to infiltrate, to assimilate, and to annihilate the Defenders of the Fourth Dimension—his family. This is his FATE, one even he, the bearer of destiny, can’t escape.
The seven-issue series chronicles Kainoa’s return from his time with grandfather to his home in twenty-first century New Jersey as he attempts assimilation with the Ryders. The first issue will be released on August 29th, with a book every two months. Each book will be twenty-four pages, a twenty-two-page chapter and a two-page trailer teasing the next issue.

His own studio, Graphic Leak (www.graphicleak.com.mx), launched in June and offers commercial illustration and animation, including comics.
Taylor Esposito is the letterer for Destiny’s Fate, and works as a graphic designer and production artist. Destined to be a comic geek, Taylor studied graphic design in college, then worked for Marvel in the digital comics department. Eventually, he settled into a position in the Bullpen, doing production work, logo design, and typesetting. He currently works as a production manager at Vertical Inc. when he’s not lettering comics. Some of his works include (as letterer) Samhain Night, Watson and Holmes (for New Paradigm Studios), and (as production artist) such Marvel titles as Amazing Spider-Man, Deadpool Team Up, and Invincible Iron Man. He is also a second degree black belt and lives happily with his wife in New Jersey. @TaylorEspo
WE WANT TO WORK WITH YOU!
SO WHY ARE YOU KICKSTARTING THIS?
Because making comics is expensive and no one takes a twisted verison of Alton Brown's sugar cookies as payment.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH MY HARD-EARNED MONEY?
I was hoping to fund this completely on my own dime, but making comics cost more than a dime (Who knew?). And a contract loader’s pay does not make enough to produce a comic bi-monthly. Your support will be going to the collaborators and production/printing.
Every backer will receive:
* His/her name on my Web site –devinlmichaels.tumblr.com
* A tweet from @DevinLMichaels, thanking him/her for his/her generous donation
* A mention on my Facebook Page
* Your name printed in a limited edition of issue two
* If DF reaches more than 300 backers—a special gift!
Aside from what you see for on the side panel, we're hoping to unlock more incentives! The first one we're aiming for:
IF YOU LEND ME YOUR EARS (I'LL GIVE THEM BACK!)
Updates will come:
Already Up—Destiny Fate Issue #1 Preview plus a two-page preview of Destiny's Fate #2
On the 250s—Characters—Learn about the people who make DF human (or otherwise)
On the 500s—Covers/Prints
On the 750s—The Process—See how the concept becomes art and how art becomes a comic
On the 1000s—WILDCARD—More incentives? A T-shirt? Possibly witty commentary about the book?
Are you ready to tempt fate?
