We’re Sioeye (sigh-oh-eye). Our compact, wearable action camera does something no other action camera can do. It lets you share your adventures with your followers through 4G LTE mobile networks in real time. In a nutshell, the Sioeye Iris4G offers the next best thing to actually being there.
We know what you’re thinking, another action camera?
Hear us out.
We all know the drill. Go skiing, mountain biking, windsurfing . . . whatever you do that gets your heart pumping and makes you happiest. Video it, and then download, edit, upload, share with your people—that is, if you remember. The truth is, the standard-issue post-production process creates mountains of stale content that gets lost on hard drives, never to be seen again. And, for those videos that do see the light of day, careful editing consumes significant time that could be spent doing more of what you love. Often, you just want to share the moment you’re in, unedited, unfiltered—the raw emotion of it all. That’s what the Sioeye Iris4G offers—real life, in the real moment, in a highly-shareable, ease-to-use way.
Who is talking about Sioeye Iris4G
Shaking the ground under the action camera market
Yes, there’s an eight-hundred pound gorilla standing tall on the action camera mountainside ready to swat away competitors trying to challenge.
Our approach is different from those who’ve tried before.
We’re going beyond just better camera specs and instead targeting the biggest challenge facing extreme sports enthusiasts. We want to help you make a fundamental shift from simply recording a video to sharing your adventures in real-time.
Posting a polished movie file to YouTube is perfectly fine, in certain situations, but we believe that a more powerful, engaging connection happens when you share an interactive experience with the people in your life as it happens.
Don’t worry, all of the footage is saved to the camera and the cloud as well, so if you want to live stream, then go back and edit, you can do that too. You’ll always have your memories accessible in several different ways.
At the end of the day, our goal is to deliver the best way for you to share your life with the people that mean the most to you. To do that, we’re shaking the ground under that gorilla, and we need your help.
Share your extreme sports experiences in a whole new way
Today’s action cameras are not all that different from the days of the VHS camcorder—they just come in a smaller form factor that you can strap onto your surfboard, your helmet, or your chest. The end product is still a video that you have to do something with in order to share.
It takes effort to package up the story of your adventures and get it out on Vimeo or YouTube, Facebook or Twitter (or all of the above).
The Internet of Things is changing our world, with connected devices appearing everywhere from your car to your refrigerator. It’s time to leave the camcorder-style video sharing in the past and get with the future.
With the Sioeye Iris4G, you start streaming by pushing a simple live streaming button on the side of the camera. Instantly you’re connected to the 4G LTE network, your followers are notified that you’re live, and you can even have a tweet published on your behalf. Within seconds your friends, family, and fans are watching you float through fresh powder, fly downhill on your mountain bike, or surf the big waves.
It’s the future of sharing your experiences. It’s the future of connected technology.
So who cares about live streaming?
You have a passion for an action sport (or maybe two or three). You love getting out there, getting the wind in your hair and the dirt in your teeth. Typically, you’re on your own, or maybe with a small group of friends.
With the Sioeye Iris4G you can now bring along all of your friends and share the action as it happens. Your people can finally see what it is that you do on the weekends when you escape to the coast or head to the mountains, and everywhere in between.
Have kids? Strap a camera on their helmet and see the halfpipe from their perspective without having to physically get in the mix.
It’s a whole new way to be involved from both a broadcaster’s perspective and a viewer’s perspective.
Looks like a camera, but inside it’s a whole new world
Everyone knows what a camera looks like. The rectangular form factor has been around for decades and provides a well-known user experience. Where the Sioeye Iris4G changes the game is what’s on the inside. We started with a vision to build the most compact, feature-rich 4G LTE live streaming camera in the world.
We brought together hardware designers, RF engineers and software developers to tackle this challenge. We laid the foundation with an Octa-Core CPU and internals specially designed for this purpose. We added a camera module with superior specifications to ensure high-quality video in extreme circumstances, from the heat of the desert to the frigidness of the mountains, from slow speeds to super high speeds, and everything in between.
A variety of sensors are included that understand speed, altitude, body position, and G-forces, offering data that is informational and sometimes brag-worthy. We also included GPS technology to allow you to track your adventures. Eighteen months and many prototypes and testing ensures that the device can handle the environment, and the antenna provides the best possible signal coverage. Now we’re ready for the final push to bring an unlocked 4G LTE live streaming camera to you!
On the software side, we give you control and flexibility of the camera with Android OS. You can easily update the software over the air (OTA) and you can connect to the Google Play store to download third-party apps. Our back-end live streaming platform enables you to share your adventures in real-time while simultaneously capturing your video in the cloud for instant replay. Your friends, family and fans can use the Sioeye mobile app or web app to participate in your adventures.
The net-net is, this is not the same-old action camera. This is a market-disrupting camera that will change the way people share their lives.
Let's Go Surfing with the Sioeye Iris4G, just watch out for that wave!
Indoor Climbing, Mountain Biking and Surf Testing with the Sioeye Iris4G
Unlocked 4G LTE brings you live streaming on the go
You have the freedom to choose your own 4G LTE data network with the Sioeye Iris4G. Simply insert your preferred SIM card with an active data plan into the microSIM slot on the side of the camera and you’re ready to go. We’ve tested extensively with T-Mobile and AT&T networks in a variety of locations across the United States. (Sorry, Verizon and Sprint aren’t supported yet).
One touch live streaming with Sioeye LiveCapture
Starting your broadcast is as easy as pressing a single button on the side the camera. It takes just a few moments and the camera automatically starts streaming your video with audio. Your network of followers are notified with an alert and you can even have a message sent out via Twitter and Facebook. Everything is done for you with the press of that one button. We call this feature Sioeye LiveCapture.
Real-time action captured with Sioeye LiveStats
Embedded into the Sioeye Iris4G are several sensors that automatically capture the excitement of the action in real-time. The GPS, barometer and gyro sensors enable Sioeye to display what you see and also what you feel while you’re live streaming. Information on your speed and altitude are projected along with your broadcast. We call this the Sioeye LiveStats and they bring a whole new level of excitement and competition among friends. We’re working on many more interesting ways to take advantage of these capabilities in the future.
Share your experiences through iOS, Android, and web apps
Take on the challenges of your extreme sport with all of your friends right there by your side, digitally of course. We’ve created applications for iOS, Android, and the web that let your followers experience your adventure in real time. Your followers can be notified whenever you start a live stream broadcast and then tune into the action with just a touch or a click. They can watch your broadcast and see your Sioeye LiveStats change as you zoom down that hill or take the plunge on a bungee jump. They can even chat among themselves in real time while watching your broadcast.
Instant replay from the cloud
Sometimes your friends can’t come along for the ride, but they still want to see your amazing stunts. The Sioeye Cloud automatically captures your live streaming videos and saves them in your account. Your followers can access your online library and replay your adventure within just a few minutes of the real-time action. No long delays waiting for you to upload your videos from one of those old school action cameras.
Simultaneously record HD video while live streaming
For those times when you want to save a higher resolution copy of your adventure, the Sioeye Iris4G allows you to simultaneously live stream AND save a 1080p high definition video to the camera. We provide 1GB of storage onboard and you can add a MicroSD of up to 64GB capacity.
What about the old school features like recording a video to an SD card?
If you just can’t help yourself, the Sioeye Iris4G can meet your needs for old school video recording. The camera is capable of 18 megapixel photographs as well as recoding videos in ultra HD 4k, 2k and 1080p resolutions (see specs at the bottom for full details). You can record slow-motion video, create time lapse videos, and shoot bursts of photos with the single click of a button.
Accessories are on the way
We’re working on the final designs of the waterproof protective case along with a variety of mounting options for a variety of situations, including bike handlebars, helmets, and surf boards. As we complete the designs, we’ll share them as status updates to all of our backers. We’re including a waterproof case, a surface mount, and a quick coupling rig with every one of our Kickstarter rewards.
The team behind the Sioeye Iris4G comes from a variety of backgrounds with expertise in mobile phone design and development, RF engineering, cloud technologies and connected software, and we all share a love of the outdoors and a passion for being active.
Sioeye Inc is based in Seattle, Washington. We’ve begun hiring our core team to bring the Sioeye Iris4G to market, and we’re using this Kickstarter campaign to help us get to the next level with the business, ensuring we continue to innovate and bring a disruptive solution to market.
Sioeye Inc. is led by David Abramowski, a startup veteran who has brought to market more than a dozen solutions and has been involved in two different IPOs. David has a knack for getting products off the ground and creating solutions focused on the user. The core team is shaping up with Manuel Espino leading the marketing efforts, Heidi Hui managing operations, Laura Hoelzl taking on graphic design and Andy Gundel is setting up the customer success programs.
Made by experts in a world-class facility
We’ve partnered with a world-class manufacturing company who has invested millions of dollars in their automation technologies and facilities. The Sioeye Iris4G manufacturing takes advantage of advanced SMT (surface mount technology) production lines, automated PCBA (printed circuit board assembly) testing, and the latest advancements in manufacturing automation including lens and VCM assembly, VCM mounting, focus tuning, glue dispensing and functional testing. Key procedures of the manufacturing process are performed in a class-1000 clean room ensuring that dust and/or particulates in the air don’t find their way into the optics. Risks and challenges
The Sioeye Iris4G is nearly ready for large scale production. Our manufacturing partner has been designing and building mobile devices for more than 10 years and has a tremendous amount of global experience. We have successfully manufactured test batches of cameras and have been using them in the woods, on the mountainsides, and in the water. With that being said, there are still risks involved in bringing this device to market.
Wireless carriers have stringent testing and certification requirements for all devices that attach to their networks. We have already passed FCC testing and are currently engaged in another test required by the carriers called PTCRB. There is a risk that during the testing process that we may uncover unexpected design or functionality issues that must be addressed prior to certification.
There is also risk involved in producing and importing hardware from abroad. Unexpected issues may come up during the process (e.g., issues with shipping, sourcing of components, manufacturing processes, etc.) We have a tremendous advantage that our partner company is a vertically-integrated supplier controlling most of the supply chain. And our team has significant expertise in handling challenges in all of these areas, but you never know when a wrinkle might get thrown into the plan.
We’ll keep you updated on our progress every step of the way. And if anything unexpected happens, you’ll be the first to know what has happened and what we’re doing to address the challenges. As a backer of our project, we’ll bring you along for the ride, literally, and give you back stage access during the process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
