Hello! My name is Evan Reinheimer. I am a kite aerial photographer from Long Island, NY.
Yes, all of my photographs really are taken using a kite to lift a camera!
Recent news story about me and my artwork:
I grew up in Babylon, NY. About the time I was 3 years old my parents gave me my first camera, around that same age I started to fly kites with my grandfather. I quickly developed a love for both...little did I know that almost 20 years later I would attempt flying my camera from my kite and change my life forever! I am now 29 years old and have been around the world flying my cameras from my kites. I love to take photographs, fly kites and travel...and I do them all at the same time!

About the technique:
Everyone is used to seeing photographs taken from the ground as well as from aircraft. However, there is an area in between the ground and where aircraft can fly that is difficult to reach and rarely photographed from. Using a kite allows me to reach these rarely seen vantage points with my cameras. I am able to photograph my subjects from an angle that they have never been seen from before! ...not to mention its pretty cool that the only thing holding the camera in the air is a kite, lifted entirely by the wind!
About this project:
I have traveled around the world and all over the US to photograph interesting places using this technique. My next trip will take me to a place I have wanted to go to ever since I was very young...AUSTRALIA!!! This will be my most ambitious trip to date!
I will be flying from New York to Sydney with an assistant and traveling throughout the country while there. I plan to photograph interesting, historical and beautiful locations throughout Australia over the course of my travels there. Photo shoots are already planned in Sydney, The Outback and Great Barrier Reef, as well as any other opportunities that may present themselves there!!!
I am extremely excited for this trip and the photographs I will produce there, they will be like none you have ever seen before!
How your funding will help:
I am not looking for charity...you are investing in my artwork and receiving something of value in return. Remember, I will only receive the funds if my project reaches its funding goal.
I am paying for most of this trip out of my own pocket. I have already purchased the airfare for myself and my assistant to travel from New York to Sydney and to travel between different cities within Australia. Your funding will help pay for basic travel accommodations, rental vehicles and printing costs.
I do not take these trips for leisure or relaxation. Every day I get up before the sun rises, spend the entire day scouting locations, photographing...or waiting for the wind conditions to allow me to launch my kite so that I can do so. I often skip meals while on location and survive on healthy snacks so that I do not miss an opportunity to take the perfect shot. I work until the sun goes down and get to bed early, or spend the night traveling to the next location, so that I can do it all again tomorrow...and I enjoy every second of it!
When you chose to invest in my trip you have the choice of receiving a photograph from the trip to Australia or one of my other photographs. I am extremely flattered that people think enough of my work to spend their hard earned money on it. Thank you very much for your support!
My previous kite aerial photography work:
I exhibit and sell my work in art shows around the United States. My work has been recognized with awards and has sold to art collectors from around the world. I am extremely passionate and serious about the work that I do.
Risks and challenges
The weather is always my biggest challenge. A lot has to come together for me to take even one successful photograph. Not only do I need good lighting conditions and weather, the wind also needs to cooperate so that I can safely fly my kites. There have been times when I have traveled to another continent and had to wait days or weeks for the wind conditions to allow me to successfully fly. It is because I am extremely driven and patient that I am able to overcome these challenges and get the shots I am after; my previous work is proof of this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
