WHY DOCTORS WRITE: FINDING HUMANITY IN MEDICINE is a documentary about a growing movement in medicine – the use of writing and the arts by clinicians in their medical practice. It features a number of authors, practitioners, and programs that advocate for the integration of humanities in medicine today.

Dr. Danielle Ofri, co-founder of the Bellevue Literary Review, meets with her patient at Bellevue Hospital in NYC.
Dr. Danielle Ofri, co-founder of the Bellevue Literary Review, meets with her patient at Bellevue Hospital in NYC.

Over the past few years of being a healthcare consumer, I was becoming acutely aware of the shrinking amount of time patients got to spend on a doctor visit, and the increasing time spent on the computer by providers. I missed the care I received from my retired internist who always scheduled time to discuss my health in relation to what was going on in my life.  Then, I encountered Dr. Danielle Ofri’s What Doctors Feel, one of several books written by clinicians about issues facing healthcare especially the patient-doctor relationship.

This led me to a larger conversation happening within the healthcare community, which has been plagued by burnout and miscommunication. In medical schools across the U.S., professors are teaching age-old tools of first person narrative and the study of visual and performing arts to help practitioners thrive while caring for their patients, themselves, and each other.

WHAT WE’VE DONE SO FAR

We’ve assembled a 15 minute segment of Why Doctors Write comprised of the filming we’ve done so far. We've documented the following clinicians and programs seeking to bring more humanity, not more technology, to the clinical encounter.

We screened a 15 minute trailer at the 2016 Examined Life Conference in Iowa City, at the Carver School of Medicine.  In 2017 we were invited to preview the film at the Medical Humanities Program at Drew University in Madison, NJ, and at the 2017 Hippocrates Symposium on Medicine and Poetry at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

At each preview event, we heard about so many writer-MDs, and medical training centers that belonged in the film Why Doctors Write.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

We have enough engaging subjects in this growing movement in medicine to turn this project into a full-length documentary! We are eager to continue filming at the following locations:

Bay Area Hospitals and Medical Schools

We will document Bay Area medical institutions that promote creativity, writing on the meaning of doctoring, and using the arts in healthcare.

Your support would ensure we could travel to the West Coast and the Mid-West to complete filming. With the Kickstarter Funds, we would then be able to add these new segments to a rough-cut of Why Doctors Write by mid 2019 and stay on tract for a 2019/2020 premier of the film.  Our goal is to bring the film as a resource to the medical field, in particular in medical school settings.

Why Doctors Write is proud to have been selected as a CID documentary project. Since its inception in 1981, the Center for Independent Documentary (CID) has worked with hundreds of independent film and video producers to support the production of stories not often told in mainstream media. One of the ways CID helps filmmakers is by serving as a film’s 501(c)(3) fiscal recipient which means that your donation not only helps us finish the film, but is also tax-deductible. CID provides donors with complete information about the use of funds contributed to help the film.
