"Because the Ratatosk Express has finally arrived in Midgard, 80 years late. All that’s left is the ruin of the engine room and a couple of twisted skeletons, and the black box. It’s as much a history project as an actual crime scene, but combing through the data still comes down to me."
It's been a while, but we're back, and with our best story yet: "The Bifrost Incident". Uncover the mysteries of the Bifrost, as inspector Lyfrassir Edda combs through the recordings of its first and last journey. No-one knows what happened to the Asgardian delegation that set out on that inaugural trip 80 years ago, but we can be certain that something went very badly wrong...
...are a seven-piece steam/cyber/diesel/punk-punk band based in London, who tell epic science fiction stories by taking a bunch of myth and shaking them up with an unhealthy amount of folk-prog-rock. You've all heard our first trilogy: the fairytale space opera "Once Upon A Time (In Space)" (2012), the cyberpunk noir thriller "Ulysses Dies At Dawn" (2013), and the spaghetti western "High Noon Over Camelot" (2014). We've taken all of them to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, netting four and five star reviews.
AND WE'D LIKE TO...
...raise the money to record our fourth tale, which takes the formula for our original trilogy and... twists it, a little. We present "The Bifrost Incident", a mass-murder mystery set on the Ratatosk Express, a locomotive shot at faster than light speeds through a man-made wormhole. The show first debuted in London on July 23rd 2016 and will be followed by performances at Nine Worlds, in Bristol, and in Oxford, at the least.
We're hoping to record the set starting around October 2016, and have the CD printed and published in time for Christmas.
HOW MUCH WILL THAT COST?
We're looking at £3,000 as a minimum, which will cover:
- 12 days recording/mixing at £150 a day
- 1,000 printed CDs in a jewel case with an 8-page full-colour booklet, for £750
- expenses for production of perks, postage, etc. for £450
As usual, that's the bare minimum. If we raised even more than that, there's all sorts of things we'd love to be doing to improve the album further still:
- More recording time(!!!)
This is always an option, and always wanted. No matter how long we schedule, it never seems to be quite enough - and this is our most ambitious project to date. Even if we spend as much as we can elsewhere, there's always scope for more recording/mixing/mastering.
- More booklet
The minimum goal only covers us for 8 pages of album booklet - traditionally we've had 12 page booklets, and stuffed them full to the brim with information, artwork and lore. We'd love to do so again.
- More flexibility
Traditionally we've been dedicated to creating as high quality perks as possible, and as such have ended up paying for some of them out of our own pocket. Anything above the minimum can give us more flexibility to make the perks incredible.
WHAT'S IN IT FOR ME?
Well, firstly, that heavily armed spaceship orbiting your planet might decide to show a little mercy...
But! Moreover - we're offering the standard range of perks, from the basic CD, to new T-Shirts, to eyepatches, and even a ticket to the Ratatosk Express!
Oh! And good news - we're bringing back song perks! These are a little limited, but if you've ever wanted to have a little ditty of your own, written and recorded to your specifications by your favourite space pirates, then look no further! For reference, these are the four songs we wrote as perks last time we offered this perk - and our home recording quality has only got better since!
And as always, our perks are cumulative - you'll get the perks at every level below the one you choose! So for example, if you opt for a poster, you'll also get a T-shirt, a copy of "Lolina: Origins", a ticket, a patch and a signed CD! How's that for value!
N.B - we've generally not charged for postage for the perks, as you've already been so generous. This time that will still be the case for postage to the UK, but overseas postage has always been a killer, so we're going to be charging a (subsidised) postage fee if you live abroad.
Thank you! Without you lot, we wouldn't have got off the ground in the first place, let alone be coming into our fourth, most ambitious set, with three well-received albums behind us. We're looking forward to sharing with you what we believe is our best story yet, and we hope you're in. All aboard the Viking Space Train!
Risks and challenges
Balancing commitments is tricky. All of the band are working or studying full time, and sometimes that gets in the way of musical commitments. We have been known to be slower than we promised in getting perks out to people, especially those high-end rewards which require a lot of time from us. We do get there eventually! And we've been learning over the years, and (we hope) are getting ever more realistic with our ideas of when we can get things finished by. As well as more embarrassed by our failures to meet those deadlines.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
