Introducing the ShelfPack.
A new kind of luggage with built-in shelves and an innovative, patent pending design. The telescoping shelves and front pockets keep your gear organized, visible and easily accessible.
There hasn’t been a major innovation in luggage since rolling luggage came along in the 1980’s. Be among the first to own a ShelfPack
It’s perfect for:
- Business travelers
- Road trips
- Even home storage.
It’s a portable closet.
How it works:
I’m Ken McKaba. Mild-mannered software engineer by day. With a degree in business I co-founded a small successful software company and spent many years traveling the globe.
On a long business trip several years ago I dreamed up ShelfPack while digging through my luggage day after day. I envisioned shelves that would keep my stuff organized and do away with rummaging and packing and unpacking my entire suitcase at every stop.
At home I started tinkering with the idea, I dismantled old luggage for parts and even sewed shelves myself. Along the way I experimented with multiple variations and prototypes: taking them on business and family trips to test them out and loaning them to friends for their feedback. My wife traveled through Europe with an early prototype.
With encouragement from friends and family, I selected a manufacturing partner: a well-established luggage source that builds luggage for many major brands. They helped me turn my designs into a fantastic product. I'm very grateful for their belief in the product, their patience with me and their sage advice. After several rounds of manufacturer prototypes the first production run is complete and in transit to the U.S.
The ShelfPack is an airline checked bag. Its dimensions are 14"x18"x26" (28" including the wheels), the interior is 6,365 cubic inches. The shelves and supports are 42" tall, fully extended. Weight: 14.5 lbs.
The shell is ballistic material and the case is rugged and reinforced for long life. It has a limited lifetime warranty (see here for details).
Retail price (msrp): $350.

From the Travel Goods Association's “Travel Goods Showcase” magazine, Summer 2015:
“The Buzz Award is The Show’s crowd-sourced trophy, voted on by attending retailers and media. It can only be awarded to brand new items, as the ballot is restricted to items from the New Product Pavilion (which was the biggest ever this year, at more than 120 items.)... This year’s win didn’t just go to a new product - it went to a brand new company as well. ShelfPack by McKaba Luggage garnered more kudos than any other item. Voters were intrigued by its unique concept... Pack the shelves, lower them into the case, get to your destination, pop the shelves back up and you’re unpacked. It’s really that simple. And that novel.”
Be among the first to own a ShelfPack. The first production run is complete and in transit to the US now! 170 are available to first-round KickStarter backers at 2 discount levels. Backers for the other levels will receive delivery from the second production run (November) just in time for holiday travel! You can get an even bigger discount if you select the multiple ShelfPack rewards.
Discounted shipping rates:
- US (incl. HI & AK): $25
- Canada: $60
- Western Europe: $70
- Australia: $40 (Just added!)
The units for August delivery will only ship to the regions above. Unfortunately shipping rates to outside those regions are prohibitively expensive, between $350 to >$550 per unit.
Update: ShelfPack now ships to Australia. Just select it in the country list when you choose a reward shipping in November.
We hope to work out better international rates for some or all other regions for the November deliveries. We will send a project update when new rates are available so you can order your ShelfPack (contribute $1 and you'll get all our project updates).
If you are outside US and Europe, please fill out this short survey so we can estimate the demand in different regions. If you enter your email in the survey you won't have to contribute to hear about updates. Click here for the ShelfPack international shipping survey.
- August 2015 - Early-bird delivery!
- Factory order based on campaign success
- September - Production
- October - product quality assurance and shipment
- November - 2nd round of delivery.
What I'll do with the funds:
- Further development and prototyping to come up with improvements, new sizes, colors and other innovative travel products.
- Increase production to meet the exploding demand and get it to distributors and customers worldwide.
- Increase promotion and marketing efforts.
This is an opportunity to own this amazing new luggage for much less than the $350 MSRP and help bring it to market.
Risks and challenges
There is minimal risk to backers. Unlike some campaigns for products in the concept or prototype phase, the ShelfPack is in production and fully realized. The second production run is scheduled with the factory and is only waiting for a quantity, based on the success of this campaign. US port delays are the only known risk to prompt delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
