About this project
Black Mesa Brewing Company is the vision of two guys from Oklahoma City who are having fun seeing the character of Oklahoma's craft beer movement take shape. Chris Sanders is a long-time homebrewer (10+ years) who decided to return to school to earn a brewing certificate with endorsements from industry heavyweights such as the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, the Institute for Brewing and Distilling, and the University of Wisconsin. Brad Stumph is a long-time beer enthusiast who is almost certain that at least one of your unalienable rights (mainly the pursuit of happiness) would be violated if Chris did not offer his craft for all Oklahomans to enjoy.
Black Mesa Brewing Company will use backer funding to secure the time and space needed to brew at OKCity Brewing Co. (a brewing cooperative) for 8 months. OKCity Brewing Co. is a essentially a microbrewery incubator that allows start-ups to begin brewing industrial-sized batches before they have the industrial-sized investments needed to purchase state-of-the-art equipment. Your donations will support not only Black Mesa Brewing Co., but a cooperative model of brewing that could introduce even more brewers into our increasingly beer-savvy state.
The inspiration for our brewery's name comes from an area of Oklahoma where mesas rise out of the high plains. Black Mesa is Oklahoma's highest point at 4,793 feet above sea level. You're not likely to wander that far west in Oklahoma unless you find adventure in the blank spaces on maps. We say, all who wander are not lost.
Here is a sampling of rewards ready to go at this time. Some are still being created by our partners. We will post pictures of finished products as we get them.
We are planning on having a rewards pick-up day at the brewery on a weekend in early March. More details will follow. Please try to make it if you can. By coming to the reward pick-up day, you will get a chance to see the equipment and space your pledge helped secure. This will also help to ensure that a maximum amount of your support goes directly to the cause by saving shipping costs. Of course we know that our support network reaches far beyond OKC, and we will be happy to ship rewards for anyone that can not make it in March. But the most important reason for the pick-up day is so that we can personally thank each and every one of you who have enjoyed our beers and want to see more!
To anticipate how the limited edition T-shirt and Poster Print will turn out, check out examples of some of Jason Pawley's other work at http://pinesprimitive.storenvy.com
Check out the Luke's 5-Line website, and start making plans for next September! We're hoping to bring a truckload of cyclists out to Black Mesa to help Luke raise money for those living with cancer http://lukes5line.com
Risks and challenges
Chris and I knew that we would face many challenges when we launched a new brewery. As a 2-man operation, we could not have done it without having access to a brewing cooperative. Your pledge is partially a vote of support for Black Mesa and partially a vote of support for the cooperative brewing model. Any success we see will surely embolden the other aspiring brewers among us and result in a more vibrant brewing community. The next 8 months will be a critical time in our creative development, but we want our backers to be confident that they will be drinking hand-crafted ales and lagers from Black Mesa Brewing Co. long after they've received their Kickstarter reward.
So, we launched 4 months ago with every intention of one day coming to Kickstarter to ask for your support. But, it was important for us to make at least one beer available to a handful of restaurants and pubs first. Now we don't have to ask craft beer enthusiasts to support our approach before getting at least a pint of our vision. Now that we've earned the right to ask for your support, go try a Black Mesa Blonde or ESB and ask yourself if you want to go on this journey with us. Connect with us on Facebook and Twitter if you need help finding locations where it's available.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
