About

“A diverse, vital, striking literary journal!” —Territory

“[Platypus Press] do such important work!” —jayy dodd

“Great writing from diverse writers!” —Alvin Park

We established WILDNESS as an online literary journal in 2015 and have since published fifteen issues featuring over 300 amazing poems, stories and essays. Going forward we would love to publish WILDNESS in print, while continuing to make it available online, for free, just a month after the print edition is released.

For this, we need your help.

We want to create something you can carry with you wherever you go, something you can dip in and out of at your leisure. For this reason, the print edition of WILDNESS will be physically smaller than most traditional magazines, and manufactured similarly to a paperback book: a compact, 6×9 inch, perfect bound edition, with over 90 pages of beautiful, inspiring writing, and reasonably priced at just £12.50 (approximately 14€ / $16) [This includes international shipping].

Another reason for running this campaign is to create a means to pay our contributors, who have until now been kind enough to support WILDNESS with their writing. And while the amount paid initially will be smaller than that of other, more established journals, we hope that moving in this direction will enable WILDNESS’ growth to be community-driven.

Details

If successful, the four print issues of WILDNESS will be available from:

#1. Spring 2019 (May) – #2. Summer 2019 (Aug) – #3. Autumn 2019 (Nov) – #4. Winter 2020 (Feb)

Background

Over the past three years we have been fortunate enough to feature some of the most respected writers within the literary community. These voices (which include: Hanif Abdurraqib, Kelli Russell Agodon, Kaveh Akbar, Raymond Antrobus, Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, Jamel Brinkley, Chen Chen, Inua Ellams, E. J. Koh, Kyo Maclear, Sabrina Mahfouz, Maggie Nelson, Michael Salu, Clint Smith, Maggie Smith, and Prabda Yoon), alongside the many emerging and new writers we publish, are what breathes life into WILDNESS.

You can find a full list of previous contributors here.

In early 2017, and with the help of our tireless team of contributing editors, we introduced a daily section, the Wilds, to explore the greater literary and creative community, as well as a weekly book review series, The Weekend Review.

We have also had the privilege of talking to many of the writers who were formative for us as literary citizens, through our Fives mini-interview series; past contributors have included: Fatimah Asghar, Mary Jo Bang, Jericho Brown, Natalie Diaz, Eve L. Ewing, Ashley C. Ford, Meena Kandasamy, Adrian Matejka, José Olivarez, Mary Ruefle, and Benjamin Zephaniah.

Through Platypus Press we have released thirteen books, twenty-four digital chapbooks, three anthologies, and recently launched Shorts, a monthly series of digital-only fiction. With these projects, we have had the opportunity to work with even more great writers, such as: Kristen Arnett, Leesa Cross-Smith, jayy dodd, Richard Georges, Jimin Han, Anis Mojgani, Jenny Sadre-Orafai, and Jennifer Tseng.

Accolades

WILDNESS was previously featured by Poets & Writers in their ‘Nine New Lit Mags You Need to Read’ article (Nov/Dec 2016), mentioning that “Wildness features formally inventive work by both established and emerging writers that embraces the mysteries of the self and the outside world,” and was also included on Entropy’s ‘Best of 2017’ list, in their presses, magazines, publishers and journals category (alongside Platypus Press), as well as in Book Riot’s ‘Literary Magazines 101’ feature.

Work published in WILDNESS has also been featured in The Best American Essays, The Best Small Fictions, Best of the Net, and Bettering American Poetry, as well as on multiple occasions in Verse Daily’s ‘Web Weekly’ feature.

Budget

Based on our initial figures, we expect the money generated to be divided as follows:

40% shipping – 15% printing – 5% design – 30% contributors – 10% Kickstarter fees
40% shipping – 15% printing – 5% design – 30% contributors – 10% Kickstarter fees

Your support, through the purchase of an annual subscription, will enable us to ensure the contributor fees, printing, and shipping costs for all four print issues are covered. Of course, should we exceed our campaign’s initial funding goal, we will increase either the number of contributors per issue, the contributor fees paid, or, hopefully, both!

Risks and challenges

We have over three years experience in publishing and curation, as well as a well-established working relationship with our print firm, Clays (a respected UK-based printer who are responsible for printing books by Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Hachette UK, Cannongate), and so have ensured the risks for this project are as small as possible.
