Campfire Stu and the Backwoods Jamboree is a children's picture book, an audiobook and a collection of original music -- all in one fun, colorful package.
We've been pretty self-sufficient in the beginning stages of this project, and have raised enough cash to get us 75% out of the gate. The book is written, illustrated and has been through several rounds of professional editing. The music has been recorded and is being mixed and mastered. The audiobook is completely done.
The book itself will be hardbound, 38 pages, & full-color featuring exciting illustrations by artist Eric Kravako, to be printed by Mascot Books.
We're raising funds to:
- complete the initial printing run of the book
- layout for the CD (the artwork itself will be lifted from the book)
- to get CDs pressed and download cards printed.
- develop a live show to be performed at schools & family functions
- purchase marketing materials: postage, envelopes, stickers, etc.
The aforementioned download cards (each with a unique code which allows for one download of the full CD content) will end up in every copy of the book, because we think that music and reading can go hand in hand, especially in the case of this project! We believe this adds a tremendous amount of value to the product.
The music, also written and arranged by author Mike Struwin, is an integral part of the story; in the story, each friend Stu meets adds another folk instrument to the "Walkabout Song" - washtub bass, mandolin and banjo - to accompany Stu's guitar. The songs will appeal to fans of contemporary folk and bluegrass with arrangements and textures reminiscent of the Grateful Dead, David Grisman, and John Prine.
including the audiobook and the four additional songs, the runtime of the CD will come in right around 40 minutes.
Here's "Mother Nature Calls", which will be included:
We're offering an "old fashioned CD" product because many folks (like us) believe that music is best enjoyed as a tangible product, and want to ensure this next generation has the same opportunity to explore liner notes and album art that we did growing up. And we're also hoping to market the music as a standalone companion to the book, to be available in music retailers as well as on iTunes, Pandora, Spotify, et al.
As for the live show, we're currently working on a script adaptation and beginning the arduous process of finding the right permanent cast members. This part of the Campfire Stu project is still many months from completion, but we hope to use some funds from this campaign to get us closer to our goal of having our first full-cast performance during the summer of 2018. As for now, author Mike Struwin has a solo show all ready to go.
Risks and challenges
Considering the bulk of the project has been completed, the biggest challenge we'll be facing is timely turnaround from the printer and the CD replicator. As soon as we have product in our hands and off to reviewers, we'll be able to fulfill the rewards from #2 on up.
We expect to have the books and CD's in hand by the end of July, but we've been told that a delay of up to six weeks can happen from time to time. This type of delay is completely out of our hands.
Beyond that, like any product headed into a crowded marketplace, we'll be pushing this series hard using tried and true techniques we've gleaned from over a decade of marketing adult contemporary music and books. This is an immense challenge for the project's long-term goals, but won't affect delivery of the rewards in the slightest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
