About this project
Three hardcover volumes. 1088 full color pages. Nearly 2500 comic strips.
The Ctrl+Alt+Del 1.0 Box Set houses the entire first ten years of the comic. Everything from the first strip in 2002 to the end of the original Ethan and Lucas story arc in 2012.
The set includes:
- Every Ctrl+Alt+Del comic published on the website between 2002 and November 2012.
- Nearly 50 additional comics that were never published on the website. Comics that were offered to donors, exclusive to other books, made for special events or game projects, etc.
- The first 450 Sillies strips.
- Wallpapers and artwork and t-shirt designs spanning the first decade, collected for the first time.
- Commentary and behind-the-scenes information throughout the books
Each 8"x12" book is a cloth-wrapped, foil-stamped hardcover, and includes a matte dustjacket with front/back synergy artwork. The title and volume number reside on the spine. Inside, the comics are arranged two-per-page, side by side on quality matte art stock. Each comic is printed from my original, high-resolution Photoshop files and is accompanied by the title and original publish date.
The set also comes with a cloth-wrapped and foil-stamped slipcase to house/display the three volumes.
Book I and Book II contain everything related to the main story of Ethan and Lucas. Everything that I considered "canon" and relevant to their ten-year arc. With the unrelated one-shots removed, these two books focus entirely on the main cast of characters and their adventures.
Especially later on in the comic's run, there would sometimes be 2-3 months of one-shots in between stories about the main cast. With this book set, for the first time ever, there are no such interruptions. This set also includes the massive "Game Games Bowl" short story in its entirety.
Book III contains... well, everything else! All of the gaming one-shots, Players stuff, Chef Brian, the Sillies, the Ethan MacManus: Space Archeologist issues, etc. Ten years worth of gaming references, random antics and pop-culture commentary.
These are some of the physical rewards included with the pledge levels (I'm hoping that the digital-only rewards such as a desktop wallpaper and PDF copies of the books are self-explanatory).
A physical copy of the Ctrl+Alt+Del 1.0 Box Set. All three hardcovers and the foil-stamped slipcase. Comes with an exclusive signed and numbered bookplate (shipped separately for International Orders). The bookplate is 4" x 5.5", and printed on high quality, self-adhesive vellum.
A disc containing digital PDF copies of each volume in the Ctrl+Alt+Del 1.0 Book Set, housed inside a full-color case for display and storage. Each copy is signed.
Update: Due to the $151k Stretch Goal, every Signed DVD Book Set* has been upgraded to a 3-Disc set that includes the Ctrl+Alt+Del Animated Series!
*Described as a "Signed Disc" in the Reward Tier descriptions.
This Kickstarter-exclusive, commemorative signed print is 8"x12", and features the very first Ctrl+Alt+Del comic strip ("Nice Melon") as it originally appeared in 2002, side-by-side with a brand new remastered version to highlight the progress of the comic's decade-long journey.
Printed on archival-quality matte photo stock and shipped in a flat, rigid mailer.
An original 8"x10" pencil and ink sketch of your favorite Ctrl+Alt+Del character on acid-free smooth Bristol board. Signed and personalized. The character can be speaking to or about you (or someone/something else), or I can simply write a little note thanking you for your generous support. It's your sketch, you decide!
You'll appear as a background/minor character in a future Ctrl+Alt+Del Storyline (Your choice of Analog and D-Pad, The Starcaster Chronicles or The Campaign).
You'll also receive a signed print of the page you appear on!
In 2003, the Applied Education poster was the very first piece of Ctrl+Alt+Del merchandise ever produced for the then fledgling comic strip. Limited to 400 prints, it has been sold out and unavailable ever since.
This brand new 18"x24" high-quality poster is an updated version of that poster, featuring twelve individual comic panels. These will ship mid-summer in protective cardboard tubes.
Add-ons allow you to customize your reward tier a bit, in case you want extra stuff. In order to include one or more add-ons in your pledge, first select an eligible pledge tier (see add-on descriptions for eligibility. Add-ons added to invalid tiers won't count!). Then manually increase your pledge level by the amount of the add-on you would like to add!
So for example, if you wanted a Box Set, but also a signed DVD set to give to a friend, you would select the $80 reward tier, and then adjust your pledge to $110 ($80 for the Box Set, $30 for the DVD add-on).
Once the Kickstarter Campaign is over, we'll attempt to read your mind, telepathically, to figure out what additional items you wanted. If that fails, we'll send out a survey where you can tell us specifically which add-ons you wanted that extra pledge money allocated to!
Here is a list of the available add-ons, and at what tiers you can add them to! (Note: Kickstarter does not allow us to send multiples of more than ten of any single item.)
Not Eligible with the $1, $5, $15 or $35 Reward Tiers. Thanks to our stretch goal, everyone with a Reward Tier that includes at least one physical reward will now receive an exclusive sticker sheet (see below)! If you want more than one sticker sheet, you can add them to your pledge for $4 each!
Only Eligible with Reward Tiers $80 and above. Thanks to a stretch goal, your books come with one set of bookmarks. Want to hold your place at more pages? Add $5 to your pledge for each additional set of three bookmarks you would like to receive.
Only Eligible with Reward Tiers $80 and above. Each Box Set includes one signed and numbered bookplate. However, if you would like each of the three volumes to have it's own bookplate, or if you'd just like to cover yourself from head to toe in bookplates, this add-on is for you! Add $10 to your pledge to bring your total number of signed bookplates up to three!
Eligible for all tiers. If you would like to add an Applied Education poster to your rewards, simply increase your pledge by $15 if you are in the US, or $20 if you live anywhere else. These will ship separately from all other rewards.
Not Eligible with the $1, $5, $15 or $35 Reward Tiers. Add a signed commemorative print to your pledge!
Only Eligible with Reward Tiers $45 and above. Add a signed DVD Set to your pledge! Includes PDF copies of the books, as well as both seasons of the Ctrl+Alt+Del Animated Series!
In order to offer as many International customers the most reasonable shipping possible, we will be sending pallets of books to a few key locations around the globe where we know we have a large saturation of readers. A fulfillment company will ship those orders from there.
Unfortunately there are still some places that are too far from a distribution center. This is a very large and heavy book set, and apparently the postal system hates large and heavy things. We'll still ship there if you really want a book, but the shipping will be expensive.
The shipping rates for a single book set are as follows:
- United States - $15
- Canada - $25
- UK - $35
- Countries in the EU - $35
- Australia - $35
- Norway, Switzerland, Mexico, Greece, Serbia - $65
- Everywhere Else - $90
There is a reward tier called THE BOX SET BEST FRIEND EDITION which includes two copies of the box set. Shipping two items in the same box to the same location is cheaper than shipping two items in separate boxes to separate locations. Great for a gift, or coordinating with a friend that also wants a book set!
Stretch goals are basically additional perks that we've been able to add to the campaign, thanks to you not just helping this project happen, but making it a huge success! Below are all of the stretch goals we've unlocked so far!
In 2007 and 2008, we produced 2 seasons of a Ctrl+Alt+Del Animated Series. Each season consisted of twelve five-minute episodes, for a total of twenty-four animated shorts.
As a massive and heartfelt thank you for helping us reach our funding goal in a mere 16 hours, pledges at the $35 Reward Tier and above will now also include digital downloads of both seasons of the Animated Series!
If your pledge includes a Signed DVD Book Set (via a Reward Tier* or Add-On) it will now include three discs instead. One for the book files, and additional DVDs for Season One and Season Two of the animated series!
*If a Reward Tier includes a "Signed Disc", that is the same thing as the "Signed DVD Set."
If we unlock this stretch goal, every Reward Tier that includes at least one physical reward will now also receive a set of five exclusive stickers. Yay, stickers!
If we unlock this stretch goal, everyone's commemorative print will bring a friend home with them! For each Signed Commemorative Print in your pledge (either from your Reward Tier or Add-Ons) you will now also receive one signed print of Zeke punching a T-Rex!
The previously unlocked Exclusive Kickstarter Sticker Set will now be upgraded to a full 8.5" x 11" sticker sheet, featuring more stickers! Also, you'll be able to Add-On additional sticker sheets to your pledge for $4!
If this stretch goal is unlocked, every Ctrl+Alt+Del 1.0 Box Set will come with a set of three 2" x 6" glossy bookmarks!
This is it. The final stretch goal. If, beyond all of my hopes and expectations for this campaign, we manage to reach $500,000, I will add eight pages to Book Two of the Ctrl+Alt+Del 1.0 set. I will fill those pages with an extended ending sequence to the original Ethan and Lucas saga. What I, as the writer, always imagined happened next, beyond what I showed you.
I want to be clear that this is not an alternate ending, or a retcon of the existing ending. I won't go into more detail than that, because if we reach this goal, and I add this story, I want it to be a nice surprise awaiting those readers that have loved and cherished these characters for so long.
I am also going to issue fair warning that if this happens, it is possible that this will push the books back a week or two (or at least eat into the buffer already allotted, anyway). While this is a story that has been kicking around my head for the past three years, and it is already written, it will need to be drawn and added to the book. Not a major delay, but there it is.
Risks and challenges
Over the past ten years I have assembled and overseen the production of half a dozen books. I am familiar with the process, and have already completed the design and layout on this book set. The entire project has been discussed and quoted in detail with the printer, and files are ready to transfer to them as soon as we get funded.
With that said, this is a much larger printing project than I have ever undertaken in the past, and there are more moving parts on this scale. This book set is larger and heavier, which moves it into a whole new tier of shipping. In order to offer the most reasonable shipping rates to as many people as possible, we will be importing books in bulk directly from the manufacturer to a handful of countries around the globe, and shipping from there.
There is a lot of paperwork involved with doing it that way, and while I'm confident that I have the resources at my disposal to sort through and accomplish it, it will still be a new process for me.
As you can see in the timeline, I have included a 4 week buffer to (hopefully) account for unforeseen circumstances that may arise during the proofing, manufacturing or importing process. As such, I am estimating to begin shipping in October of 2015. My goal is to get these books into everyone's hands by Christmas, and live to tell the tale.

If I pledge for a reward tier that includes an original sketch, will you sketch two characters for me?
I had originally budgeted time for fifty individual character sketches. However, I want you to get a sketch that you love, so if you want two characters (maximum), and you're not asking for anything super complex (Ethan ice-fishing with a banjo while Zeke conducts a hermit crab orchestra behind him, for example), then yes, I will include a second character in your sketch. We can discuss the particulars when the reward surveys go out, and I reserve the right to refuse any requests. But I will work with you on it.
A bookplate is a fancy label or card that you affix to the inside cover of a book. Traditionally, this was used to identify the owner of the book ("From the library of Andy Smith," for example). It is also offered as a way for an author to provide a signature for a book, without being present to sign the book itself.
I will never actually be in the same room as the books being shipping internationally. They will go straight from the manufacturer to a shipping warehouse. And all of the book sets will be individually shrinkwrapped to protect them from moisture during shipping, so then signing the books would require opening each set.
A signed bookplate was the best approach for this set.
They all do now. If you have pledged for a DVD set, either as part of a Reward Tier, or as an Add-On purchase, it is now a three-disc set that includes the Animated Series as well as PDF copies of the books.
Reward Tiers that include the DVD Set are the ones that specifically say "A signed disc containing a PDF copy of each book in the Ctrl+Alt+Del 1.0 set (three PDFs total, Vol I, II and III)."
If the tier does not specify that they come on a disc, then it only includes a digital download copy.
You will need to increase your Reward Tier, or manually Add-On a DVD set by adjusting your pledge amount.
I'm thrilled that we're tearing through some stretch goals and that I can offer you guys some extra nifty stuff. But at the same time, continuing to add additional rewards and items and perks etc is the most surefire way for this campaign to spiral out of control, and I absolutely don't want to end up in a situation where things are getting delayed because I've over-committed.
So as much as I like the idea of coming up with new goals and having us reach them, I have to balance that against my commitment to the core of this project, which is manufacturing and delivering the Box Set to my backers.
