To all Fans, Backers and Readers,
Since we launched Kickstarter we have received amazing feedback from the community, better than we ever expected! This has given us a lot of energy to finish the development of Unnamed 101 and to be up to all the expectations we have set.
However, we didn’t have as much time as we would have wanted to plan the Kickstarter campaign and we definitely couldn’t build a playable demo on time for everyone to try U101. This has resulted in our project not receiving enough traffic and we are therefore temporarily cancelling the project with the objective to relaunch in September.
This doesn’t mean that we are not finishing U101, all the contrary! We have had huge interest from the community and we are even talking with publishers and other studios interested in franchising the game for different consoles. Unnamed 101 is here to stay.
All the pledges will be voided of course and the paypal backers will be refunded in the following days. Some of you have expressed a lot of interest in the hoodies and t-shirts we were offering as rewards so we are considering opening a small store in our official website, stay tuned!
For now, if you are interested in collaborating in the development of the game and being part of the community please follow us in www.Facebook.com/hailstudios and in www.twitter.com/hailstudios and let us know your thoughts. Remember it's a real opportunity to influence the development and interact with the production team.
Thanks everyone for your support and looking forward to engage again very soon,
The HAIL Studios Team

Unnamed 101 is about taking a twin stick style control scheme and melding it with the mechanics of iconic point and click PC role playing games we grew up with like Diablo and Baldur's Gate or more modern titles like Torchlight. We love games with an engaging story and an expansive world, but we are too busy to sit down and spend a dozens of hours working through a long campaign. We believe we are not alone, which is why in Unnamed 101 we want to create the same sense of fun and immersion as a PC or console action RPG but take advantage of the mobile platform to make the best mobile action RPG to date.
The unnamed main character, who we call U101, carries a gatling gun, a blunderbuss and an array of specialty gadgets and abilities to help control and defeat swarms of enemies. The player moves with the left thumb, fires the weapon with a button on the right and when the player wants more refined aiming he only has to move his thumb out away from the fire button and it becomes a virtual joystick for aiming. We are constantly iterating on the design because we want nothing to get in the way of enjoying the game itself and a bad set of virtual thumbsticks can take one out of the moment.
A typical combat encounter has the player facing down a horde of enemies with a variety of ammo types for his primary weapons like thermite laced shells that burn through armor or a shotgun blast with electricity arcing between the projectiles. When the crowd gets to be too much, the player can call upon gadgets like magnetic mines or walking bombs that march towards enemies. The magnetic mine violently attracts metal enemies towards it, then explodes in a massive fireball. The player also has access to mental powers like telekinesis where the players use the touch screen to physically throw enemies into one another and off of cliffs, or simply have them hang in the air so they cannot put up a fight.
With these devices and weapons the player battles through levels full of interesting enemy encounters and amazing boss battles, all the while collecting items to help develop the character.
The main character is half man, half steam powered machine. He wakes up at the start of the game with no memory, but finds that parts of his body have been replaced with mechanical components. With this new exoskeleton he has enhanced physical abilities and the possibility of augmenting his abilities and gadgets using the skeleton’s on board systems.
Not only that, but the player also shows signs of possessing amazing telepathic and telekinetic abilities that allow the player to use his mind to affect the world around him. Over time the player must choose to spend resources to gain more mechanical might or invest in mental abilities. Choosing one side or the other means the player either becomes a master mechanic or an amazing mentalist.
- Magnetic Mine
- Walking Bomb
- Tesla Coil
- Remote Control Ally
Mental Powers :
- Life Tether
- Mind Mirror
Punch Cards System:
- General cards that improve the speed and armor of the player’s base stats.
- Dash cards which modifies the distance, applies additional elemental effects, and can even add a splash attack at the end.
- Gatling Gun Card modifies the speed, firing rate, magazine size and can apply elemental damage to each round.
We feel that too often story falls by the wayside when a game goes to mobile, so we are attempting something never seen before; a “choose your own adventure” style comic book where the decisions the player makes changes the story and even the gameplay itself.
The majority of the story is told with our in-game comic book and at critical points the player is given a variety of options on what course of action to take. These decisions change how the characters interact with the player and can either cause immediate consequences or perhaps consequences further along in the story.
During cutscenes the player is presented with a page or two of comic book exposition, then is asked to choose one of the available options. Then at the end of the game, the player can view their comic book story as a whole comic. It shows the journey the player took including every decision they made as well as additional information like what other characters were thinking, more back-story and concept art that opens up the world of Unnamed 101. Players’ can even order a hardcopy version of the comic to keep forever and ever and ever.
Unnamed 101 features an amazing cast of steampunk characters, from the cockney foul-mouthed female mechanic companion with a heart of gold, to the bounty hunting nobleman Braxton Fescue with a duelling obsession, to the butler bot reprogrammed and modified to be the world's most cordial assassin; the characters provide an interesting series of boss fights and great story moments.
One thing we find lacking in a lot of games for mobile devices is that the environments do not have a sense of epic scale. We want the play area to be richly detailed and we want our world to appear vast and expansive by having a lot of background elements. One of our environments is a large underground drilling platform carving it’s way to the center of a mountain. As you fight on top of platforms on the drilling rig you can see down through the scaffolding and piping to a the drills churning their way through the rock surrounded by magma fissures. One of our other fantastic environments is the deck of a massive zeppelin as it travels over lush countryside and a massive city. The player will actually steer the zeppelin around obstacles and away from danger as he battles against a massive attack by enemy forces. We want the player to feel like he is missing nothing by playing on mobile device.
The world of Unnamed 101 is an alternate “steampunk” reality where society focused on advancements through steam powered locomotion as opposed to petroleum based development. It is a world where Victorian sensibilities still rule and a rigid caste system has formed between the laborer classes and a ruling class of nobles with frightening mental powers.
- Order of the Eye
As the story develops the player chooses what alliances to form and clues to his secret past in this world are revealed. We are big fans of the steampunk genre and feel as though this unique slant on culture is not represented enough in games and media. We love mechanical ingenuity, manners and ritual, and old world architecture mixed with steam powered industry. This is a world where we would want to live.
We are a multi-talented multinational team with members spread across six time zones. We have members in Ireland, United Kingdom, Spain, Argentina, Canada and the United States. Many of us have experience working at AAA game studios, big movie production houses and billion dollar software companies.
We all joined because we are passionate about making games but did not have an outlet to create things that we really wanted to make. We have award winning artists, an award winning composer and sound designer, a cadre of highly respected programmers, a marketing and production team of industry veterans and a game designer who worked for BioWare Austin on Star Wars: The Old Republic. Despite the time zones we love working together and want to make amazing things. We have big plans for the future and this is the next step in the process.
You can visit the portfolio of each member of the team in our Website by clicking on their images.
For the last year we worked on this game for free because we believe we can make something amazing, but with the core mechanics of the game close to completion as well as our first level and first set of assets we are getting to the point where we need more resources to scale up production and get a full game out to the market. We want to create 3 different environments, 6 characters, 5 enemies and 40 page comic book and if we want to achieve our vision without cutting features we want to be able to work on this game full time and that means paying staffers.

Risks and challenges
Our major challenge is to ship everything we want by the end of the year. As veterans in game and software development we know there is always a risk of the ship date slipping or that we will have to ship with fewer features. And of course like all projects there is a possibility that we will not ship at all because of circumstances beyond our control and the fact that we are working without publisher support.
That having been said, each team member has released games and products in the past so we know what it takes to get a quality product out the door. We believe in this project and we are in this until the end.
