For the last 2 years Jennifer Shagawat, from Starcleaner Records and Shellshag, along with William E Badgley, director of the underground rock doc hit, "Kill All Redneck Pricks: A Documentary Film about a Band Called KARP" have been working with the original line up of the first all girl punk band, first wave British Punks, and the godmothers of Punky Reggae, The Slits on a feature length documentary film about the band... and now they are almost done!
The film is shot, nearly finished with the edit, and amazing deals have been struck to include an incredible amount of absolutely beautiful film footage of the band from the 70' and early 80's and a lot of it has never been seen before. Not too mention music! And Pictures! Now they just need the money to seal these deals and include the archival.
Jennifer and bill have fought long and hard to get this whole way almost entirely on their own... sleeping on floors and flying around on their own dime... now they have 50 non consecutive minutes edited with these amazing folks:
Ari Up (Slits vocalist/Ari Up and The True Warriors), Viv Albertine (Slits Guitarist/Flowers of Romance/Author), Tessa Pollitt (Slits Bassist), Palmolive (Slits drummer/Flowers of Romance, The Raincoats), Budgie (Slits drummer/Siouxie and The Banshees), Bruce Smith (Slits drummer/The Pop Group, PiL), Kate Corris (Initial Slits guitarist/The Raincoats, The Mo-dettes), Don Letts (DJ/Filmmaker), Dennis Bovell (Producer of CUT) Paul Cook (Sex Pistols), Jeni Cook (Culture Club), Hollie Cook (Reformed Slits/Solo Career), Viven Goldman (NYU' Punk Professor), Dr No (Reformed Slits), Anna Schulte (Reformed Slits), Michelle Hill (Reformed Slits), Helen Reddington (Professor/Author), Zoe Howe (Band Biographer), Allison Wolfe (Bratmobile) and many more.
This is an amazing story about an incredible band... a band that was not willing to be contained... not within a gender, not within a musical style, not within a time period or an art form. You want to hear this story believe me, we are in awe of it everyday we get the amazing opportunity to work with it.
And the story of how this project got started is as incredible as the project itself... the film's executive producer, Jennifer Shagawat was brought on by Ari Up and Tessa Pollitt of the reformed Slits in 2006 to be their driver, tour manager, friend and confidant. Jennifer got to be very close to the band and worked tirelessly with them to bring their music and their vision to the world.
During this time Ari became more and more obsessed with documenting the band in hopes that she and Jennifer would be able to release a film documenting their art, spirit, and their struggle. What no one knew at this time was that Ari was very sick and slowly dying of cancer.
When Ari passed away the film was not finished... so, after a period of mourning, and at the urging of The Slits bass player and friend, Tess Pollitt, Jennifer picked herself back up and set about the arduous task of completing the film... but the film was in pieces and Jennifer was on her own.
Jennifer decided that she needed some help... to this end she contacted a long time friend of hers, William E Badgley who had just finished touring The UK, Europe, and US with his self financed, self produced, and self booked film "Kill All Redneck Pricks: A Documentary Film about a Band Called KARP" a film chronicling the intimate friendship of three childhood friends as they experienced great setbacks and great joys in their art and in their lives, and the two of them set about making Ari's vision a reality.
It hasn't been easy by any stretch of the imagination, but nothing worth doing ever is and now it's nearly completed, and with your help it will no doubt be a fantastic reality.
Risks and challenges
Without your help it will be increasingly difficult for this project to live up to it's full potential... not just in terms of it's story, ethos, music and message, but in terms of all the hard work and talent that has been poured into this project already.
Jennifer and bill have hung out with The Slits filming current moments with Slits members to give you as intimate of a look into their lives as possible, but let's face it, what's a Slits documentary without the archival footage and original tracks!!! Especially when the deals have been struck and it's just a bit of coin that's standing in the way!
Jennifer and bill have pulled out every last stop to get the project this far... they've borrowed money, skimped on meals, talked to friends, and now they are calling out to the world for help.
If you want to be a forever part of the band that helped change history then look through the sweet prizes we've put together and give us a click, it won't be wasted.
They've been down this road before and arrived safely on the other side, bill is an accomplished documentary filmmaker of rock docs specifically, he's shown his film over 70 times in 10 countries and 3 languages and received great press such as "Excellent" in the San Francisco Bay Guardian and 3 out of 4 stars in The Seattle Times, he's taught documentary appreciation at the university level, runs his own documentary film school, and is a 15 year veteran of a touring rock band.
Jennifer is completely self made in both her art and her business, she runs her own film studio in Brooklyn, manages her own record label, and is a 25 year veteran herself of international rock n roll touring.
