That miserable-looking bastard on the right is me, John Purcell. I am a comedy writer/performer from Dublin, Ireland currently living in Los Angeles, CA. For many years, I was a house improv performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York. I also created, directed, and starred in the web series, Business Work, which was listed as one of the top five web series of 2014 by Splitsider and as one of six online comedy series that deserve to be on TV by Entertainment Weekly.
Here are a couple of my favorite things I've made over the years:
Since 2014, I have self-produced and self-financed 43 videos that I released on my YouTube channel. The majority of this stuff was short-form comedy on a shoestring budget. Now, I’d like to produce something on a larger, more cinematic scale. If you have enjoyed my work over the past few years, you have a chance to make my newest project become a reality!
Mr. Stockdale is a comedic short film about Kenneth (Nick Guercio), a therapist's receptionist with a lifelong predilection to fall in love with every clown he sees. Unfortunately, his boss, Dr. Timpley (Jocelyn DeBoer), has a clown client, Harry Stockdale (Jonathan Marballi), who comes to sessions during his lunch break in full wardrobe and makeup. Kenneth must try to maintain his professionalism despite falling completely in love with this incredible clown. It’s a tale of forbidden love that I hope will strike the perfect balance of silly and sweet. If it doesn’t, I fucking suck.
When I wrote this script, I had three actors in mind to play the leads. To my surprise and delight, they all agreed to be a part of it. They are:
Nick Guercio is a performer and writer based in Brooklyn, New York. Nick has been performing at the Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater since 2014. Nick has been featured in videos from Netflix, Comedy Central, Above Average, College Humor, CH2, and Funny Or Die that have been covered by Splitsider, AV Club, Huffington Post, and Entertainment Weekly.
Jocelyn DeBoer is an actor/writer/director that got her start at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in NY. She has acted in several films and television shows including Tommy Wirkola's Nazi zombie comedy, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead, Inside Amy Schumer, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Adam Ruins Everything, The Pete Holmes Show, and The UCB Show. In 2014, Jocelyn received The Rising Star Award at the 37th Starz Denver Film Festival for her supporting role opposite Anton Yelchin in the film 5 to 7. Jocelyn received the Special Jury Recognition for Writing at SXSW (2016) alongside her writing partner, Dawn Luebbe, for their short film Greener Grass.
Jonathan Marballi is an actor, writer, and comedian. Credits include playing Hunter in the SeeSo original series Thingstarter as well as guest appearances on House of Cards, Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer and many others. He can also be seen in a variety of comedy web videos online including Hot Sauna (Tosh.0 Video of the Week) and the viral White’s Only Laundry. Jon is also the creator of the comedic food review web-series Grumpy Gourmet and the host of Mad About Mad About You, a Mad About You re-cap podcast.
The amazing supporting cast is Kathy Yamamoto, Benjamin Apple, and a li'l cameo from Malin von Euler-Hogan.
THE PRODUCTION TEAM
In addition to the great cast, I am also lucky to be surrounded by an incredibly talented and experienced production team. This includes:
Kirk Larsen (Director)
Kirk Larsen is a director/writer focused on visually driven narrative storytelling. He likes to tell all kinds of stories, from creating series for TruTV, Nickelodeon, VEVO, and Channel 4 to directing narrative comedy for Seeso, Go90, Funny Or Die, and Above Average to directing commercials for brands like Sony, GMC, Salesforce, and Facebook and branded content for Vox Media, the Huffington Post, and Refinery29.
Arlene Muller (Director of Photography)
Arlene Muller graduated from the AFI cinematography program and lives and works in Los Angeles. Her films have shown at many festivals including Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW. She was awarded a Panavision cinematography prize for her short Vape. She shot the Vimeo series 555 which was nominated for Best Breakthrough Series in the Gotham Awards. She loves peanut butter on toast.
Darren Miller (Producer)
Darren Miller is a Social Creative Producer at Funny Or Die, creating original short form content for Funny Or Die. Previously, he launched and ran their Independent Creator Program, through which he Executive Produced digital comedy shorts from outside writers and filmmakers. In 2018, he started Big Mischief, a comedy production company to develop and produce innovative and exciting projects that fall outside the scope of his work at Funny Or Die.
WHAT WE NEED MONEY FOR
Our $11,143 goal will go towards the location fee, paying crew, feeding people, costumes, props, production design, and renting camera and lights. Once we've shot the film, we'll then need money for color grading, sound mix, and original music. When the film is fully edited, our plan is to enter it into as many film festivals as possible. The majority of these submissions require a fee.
We have some really exciting rewards for backers, including of course first access to the film itself, credit in the film, and:
- A random but very special piece of Mr. Stockdale memorabilia, some of which includes original artwork by our amazing production designer, Chloe Badner (@badnerbadner)
- An original podcast just for you
- The sole copy of a previously unreleased episode of Business Work
We have already begun production and are well on our way to have the film completed and ready to submit to festivals by the fall. I expect to release the short online sometime around May of next year.
Risks and challenges
Everyone involved in this production has a wealth of experience under their belt. While each production brings its own unique challenges, I'm confident that our amazing crew will be able to handle them all!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
