Renaming of the Birds is an illustrated storybook about a young clerk who is assigned to rename all the birds in his town. The book is in the form of a journal kept by the clerk, and proceeds through a whole year, as he ventures farther and farther into the woods, looking for new birds to rename. He ends up sleeping outdoors, travelling all around, building a winter den and going a bit crazy.
I originally thought of this as a kids' book and kept the language within hearing of 10 to 12 year-olds, though really it's a book for all ages, and adults will find plenty to think about.
If you're familiar with my webcomic Buttercup Festival you'll know the sort of whimsy, humor and outdoorsiness you'll find in Renaming of the Birds. If you're not -- I hope you'll find out! I've been working on this for years, doing dozens of black and white illustrations and refining the text, and I'm really excited to get this book in front of readers old and new. I just need your help with the printing bill, basically.
I've kept the proposed format for the book modest (to make the goal more achievable) while still making a worthy job of it, so the finished book will be something you can enjoy and I can be proud of. The book will be around 80 pages, paperback, notched bound with a flat spine. Illustrations are full bleed, including some big two-page spreads.
So there you have it! I do hope you will help me bring this book into the world, and find a place for it on your bed stand or bookcase. Here is a picture of a skunk.
Risks and challenges
The plan is to get this in people's hands in time for the holiday season, and I have quotes and time estimates from printers which tell me that this is totally doable. But with printing there is always a risk of delay.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
