I have been invited along with other Artists and Scientists to be Artist in Residence with the well known Clipperton Project on board their expedition through the Northern Isles of Scotland for the whole month of July. Our trip will start from Shetland and work our way around the uninhabited islands, coastal towns, remote lands and also venture on to Orkney and smaller Islands out to sea.

http://www.clippertonproject.com/expeditions/northern-isles/

The Clipperton Project has active engagement programmes across the globe, all focused on the amazing possibilities of what we might achieve when we regard the horizon as a possibility, not a border. The aim of each expedition to to enable people to work across boundaries, whether personal, cultural or professional. The issues they explore and bear witness to later inform public presentations that inspire and empower the public to explore their own surroundings, their own abilities and possibilities, and take notice of our world.

Our expedition around the remote areas of the Northern Isles is to focus on sustainable coastal communities, plastics, remote populations and empowering science dissemination, also bringing to light how these places are affected by the harsh elements.

My role as an Artist on board this expedition is to pick up on remote places and document them in a powerful way to the public, engage with the artwork, bring these Islands out into focus whilst also challenging my ideas and meanings behind my Art work by gaining primary source material from the places and journeys.

My aims for this project is to gather as much photography, writing, documentary work and inspiration as possible.I intend to convey my experience of this journey around the far out remote areas of Northern Scotland to the public through my drawing and photography. I will work first hand within the elements, gain primary source material, be outdoors within the surrounding landscapes and sea and truly build up my inspiration and influence greatly from the remote location of the Northern Isles.

I intend to build up a large body of work to highlight the mysterious Islands, the wild rugged seascapes and coastal lines, developing and building up my ideas behind my practise. Concentrating on the dominant and vast beauty of Scotland’s Northern Isles, they will play as the main subject matter within my work yet also have an underlying darker meaning with the brooding harsh sea and the lonely smaller Islands and sea stacks. Secondly, as my practise is based on places and the atmosphere of certain landscapes and settings, I am drawn to the Residency and think it would be perfect for me because of the locations in which I don’t think I would ever be able to experience as fully without this opportunity. This experience combined with the influential sea and landscapes that will be provided endlessly throughout the trip will no doubt fill my inspirational needs and fuel my artistic practise for ever more. Furthermore, it will also give me more thought and depth to the way in which I approach the subject matter within my work. It will allow me to study new material, develop my writing practice and reinforce the way in which I see my work leading. Altogether, this Residency would be of the upmost benefit to me to properly understand the subject matter, challenge the way in which I see my work leading while also giving me a new location in which to flourish as an Artist and Landscape Photographer. It will also give me a chance to share this journey and experience to the wider world and public through my work and photography.

Money pledged for this project will be applied directly and exclusively to the production of high quality prints and drawings which I will be making directly on site throughout my time spent on the expedition.

Below is my website with some examples of my recent photographs and works that I have done throughout my Journeys around remote areas of Scotland and Iceland. From the Outer Hebrides to the Northern parts of Iceland I have documented and built up my experience of these places to get as much atmosphere as possible across to the viewer in my works. Hence the reason why I would benefit so much from the expedition venture, it would take my work to the next level!

Risks and challenges

The only risks throughout this project is the making of the work on the journey. Due to being very remote and the climate harsh, it will be somewhat difficult sometimes to produce work constantly on board a boat.
However, I am used to working within the elements of Scotland so will work to the best of my ability from the land as I prefer the technique, it gets across the real feeling of the landscape and atmosphere.
