Who is Jiggs?
Everyone has the ability to contribute a great deal to society, and even to bring joy to those around him or her. No matter the circumstances one was born in, anyone can continue to have a positive outlook on life and inspire others. Jiggs Robert Gaffney is a 56 year old mentally disabled man living in Tyler, Texas, who spends his summers at Pine Cove Christian Camps, not as a camper, or a staffer, but as a volunteer.
He enjoys getting involved in all the camp activities, from basketball to theme night events. His favorite activity is a game called Commando, where campers wander through a dark forest in an attempt to collect “micro chips,” which will gain them points for their team. Jiggs serves as the “Commando Boss” and stops the campers from collecting micro chips. There is no doubt that this game would not be the same without his spirit, and for this reason, the campers love it.
Jiggs is an absolute blessing to the staff and the campers as well. He has spent his summers there for the last 35 years, and every summer, he serves as an example of how anyone can be used by God to serve. The camp has become his home, and he wanders from one side of the camp to the other, participating in every activity he can. Jiggs has never let his disability stop him or slow him down, and the campers and staff are truly inspired by this.
About The Film
Jiggs is a documentary that explores how Jiggs Gaffney serves despite his mental disability. The film follows Jiggs as he participates in programatic events, and interacts with staffers and campers. The documentary also shows how those with intellectual disabilities can still have a large impact on society and be an influence to those around them. Most importantly, the film reveals how anybody can be used by God for his glory no matter the circumstances. The film was completed as my thesis film at The University of North Texas.
