"Run for your life, never turn around, take your thoughts and put them on the fire, burn the place you hide." Silence Break Your Heart - St Thomas
PLEASE NOTE that the £5,000 target is the bare bones minimum we need to complete the film by pulling in all the favours we can. Every Krone or Pound over that will go directly into additional (very costly) post production work and will translate directly into what you see on screen. There's a whole bunch of extra detail we'd love to include in the film and every additional donation over the £5,000 will help us put more of that into the film. It is only with your support that we can make this happen. Thank you.
WHO WAS ST THOMAS?
As the line between what 'is' and 'isn't' authentic becomes increasingly difficult to define, the conspicuous absence of filter between the life and the art of Norwegian musician Thomas Hansen is as refreshing as it is heartbreaking.
Before his tragic death in 2007, Thomas Hansen was one of the most original and painfully honest voices in contemporary music. Haunted by the debilitating effects of mental illness, his music, both joyous and melancholy, was rooted in a place of heartfelt candor, an open invitation to the world of a uniquely talented and often very troubled artist.
Filmed with unprecedented access to unreleased archives and interviews with the musicians, friends and family closest to him, Burn The Place You Hide is the first time the extraordinary life of Thomas Hansen has been fully documented.
From a distance Thomas Hansen appeared to have it all. Feted by such luminaries as Lambchop and Howe Gelb, he seemed destined for an acclaimed and successful career. Tragically however, it was this very success, combined with the honesty that had made his music so special, that left him increasingly vulnerable to an aggressive media and acted as the catalyst that drove him to the edge of despair.
Increasingly overlooked by critics and misunderstood by the press he followed a singular personal vision that led him to create some of the most universally human songs of his career and gave birth to an abundance of music that is only now being fully appreciated.
The film is both a candid tribute to a unique artist and a universal story about the capacity for love between family and friends.
Set against the backdrop of the Norwegian landscape the film features an exceptional body of interviews. It is through the words of those closest to him, alongside a wealth of never before seen archive material and a huge library of home recordings, we finally begin to understand the life of an immensely complicated and hugely gifted human being.
"I am a dreamer and I sometimes live so much in my dreams that I get very disappointed when I find out which world I am in." - Thomas Hansen 2001
WHAT IS THIS CAMPAIGN FOR?
We are currently near completion of the film and now need to raise a 'relatively small' amount of additional funding to cover the last stages of production, post and licensing and we really hope that you might be able to help.
PLEASE NOTE that the £5,000 target is the bare bones minimum we need to complete the film by pulling in all the favours we can. Any amount over that will go directly into additional post production work and will translate directly into what you see on screen. There's a whole bunch of extra detail we'd love to include in the film and every additional donation over the £5,000 will help us put more of that in.
We’ve been working on the film for the last four years and over this period we’ve recorded interviews with dozens of key people closely involved in Thomas life, been given access to all of his recordings, both released and unreleased and a huge wealth of never before seen archive material ranging from home videos to photographs, performances, music videos and personal diary entries.
We now have the vast majority of what is quite simply an amazing story about one of the most extraordinary people to ever emerge from the Norwegian music scene.
We are hoping you might be able to help us with additional funding to support final edit time, post and (the rather costly) licensing of archive material from broadcasters. To date the project has been entirely funded by ourselves, family and friends but we need your help to take it to the next stage. The funds would help us to cover:
Final editing time.
Colour grade and audio.
Duplication costs for masters and screeners.
Licensing for Television and Radio archive
Our hope is to launch the film at the Bergen and Oslo film festivals, so if you happen to be in either city around those dates it would be great to meet you for a chat and a (non-alcoholic) drink or two. You can find out more information on the film at our official website: burntheplaceyouhide.com but please feel free to get in touch with us if you'd like to know any more details or just want to chat with us about the project. We'd love to hear from you.
HOW KICKSTARTER WORKS:
1: You pledge your support and in return choose a reward.
2: If we don't reach our target amount by the deadline, we don't get any money at all.
3. If we raise more money than our target amount we can invest it in making the film even better.
WHAT ARE THE REWARDS FOR GIVING?
St Thomas's ORIGINAL GUITAR!!!
Yes, thanks to master luthier Marten Skogmo we can offer one of Thomas's original early electro acoustic guitars. Thomas loved the detailing on this guitar and thanks to Marten it has been completely restored to it's original condition whilst retaining all the grease on the frets left by Thomas himself. Although this guitar is from the period when Thomas wrote some of his biggest hits we can't promise it will do the same for you! ;) But just imagine having this in your living room and being able to play one of Thomas's songs on his actual guitar. Alongside this we'll give you a C-Type print of Thomas with the guitar for you to frame. And that's not all, we'll also give you an associate producer credit so you will always be remembered as a core part of the small team behind the film. This is an absolutely amazing deal and also a big help to the film. Be quick! :)
- Beautiful large format collectors C-type photographic prints. We are printing two of the main movie poster designs in a strictly limited edition run of just 10. You can chose between the 'Hat on Fire' and 'Into the Forest' designs printed on stunning Fuji Flex or Kodak Metallic paper types at large (594mmx 841mm) sizes. Each print is signed and numbered by directors and artist. We are also offering a strictly limited run of original unreleased St Thomas photographs (please check back here for updates).
- Limited edition movie Zippos. Handsome ebony Zippos engraved with the 'Burn the Place you Hide logo. Engraved ebony black Zippos
Tee Shirts!!! Choose one of our exclusive American Apparel 'Burn the Place you Hide' Tee shirts. Available in mens and womens small, medium and large. Please specify design and fit.
Please note for a small additional fee we can mail out t-shirts, prints or lighters well in advance of the DVD release date. Alternatively they can be bundled with the DVD and shipped at the same time as the official release. We're aiming for the official DVD release at the end of the year but please be aware this is an estimate and there is always the potential for some 'slippage'. Rest assured though we'll be pulling out all the stops to get it to you just as soon as we can.
CHECK OUT THE MUSIC OF ST THOMAS:
Whether you make a pledge or not we really recommend you to check out the music St Thomas on Spotify, or somewhere similar. Beautiful music that becomes so much richer when you're aware of the story behind it.
Many thanks for your time.

Risks and challenges
We're in the very fortunate position that the majority of the work on the film is already completed. This means, the good news is, that as a backer, the amount of risk is, at the most, very minimal. In addition to our extensive industry experience, we brought in an experienced production partner (with a background in long form content) last year.
However, as with any project, there are still potential challenges and risks. Although, as mentioned above, we expect these to be minimal at most, post production is a costly and labour intensive process. Although we've tried to ensure we're covered for most eventualities, there are still the potential curveballs that you can't always foresee. Hopefully this shouldn't be the case but there is always the potential for release dates to shift as a result.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
