What is the Mipwr Dynamo?
Mipwr Dynamo is a protective case, backup battery, and hybrid charger all in one. The case will contain, at minimum, a 400 mA battery and a concealed push lever that, when pumped, generates electricity, and charges the internal battery.
In the event you exhaust both the cell phone battery and Mipwr's backup battery (that will give you 2 extra hours of talk time) - you can pump the push lever to produce 30 seconds of talk/text for 1 minute of pumping. These efforts will create enough battery power to make a distress call or text at a moment's notice.
We have determined the bare minimum capital needed to start mass production - and ultimately make the product SO affordable that everyone can own one! We are happy to offer this product at an introductory pledge of $25, which is much less expensive than many cases/backup batteries out on the market today!
You may be wondering if Mipwr is ergonomically efficient and it is! Given the device's squeeze lever, Mipwr positions itself as more ergonomically effective than regular electromagnetic induction crank chargers. These crank chargers force users to recharge their mobile devices by pinching two small fingers together to fit around a tiny crank. Talk about being uncomfortable!

Who is Mipwr Dynamo for?
No excuses that your teenager's phone ran out of battery; every parent should have one to give their kids!

Mipwr Dynamo's Background
After witnessing the aftermath of power outages from recent natural disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy and the cruise ship disasters, we thought about taking an existing technology (electromagnetic induction), and making it small enough to fit in the back of a cell phone case. We thought, "how cool would it be to have an alternative energy source (besides a back up battery) that could power a mobile device, so users could send out a message or phone call when they need to most?" The idea was born...with a not-so-catchy name: "Cranky"!
So, we contracted the help of a prototyping company and, after some trial and error, were able to come up with a working prototype that functioned just as we had envisioned.
After a couple of months of due diligence, sifting through the numerous factories in Shenzhen, selecting the materials for molded parts, locating a suitable lithium ion battery, and designing the electronics circuit board.

Mipwr Dynamo's Electronics
All of Mipwr Dynamo's electronics are concealed in the case, as we were careful to minimize the thickness of the product. Looks great in CAD, now to make all the individual components literally from scratch, and make it work...
Here we have our first working prototype!
Note: The lever is "cleverly" concealed in the case profile, and will fold away into a closed position. The lever is kept in closed position with a small slide switch on the opposite side wall of case and there is even a built in charging port to accept the iPhone 5/5S charger.

Risks and challenges
The final design of the dynamo is now complete at this point. The electronic parts are specified and the molds for the case are designed and awaiting to be manufactured. We tested our prototype for durability and functionality with regards to operation time versus charging the battery using the hybrid charging system. We also believe the design is attractive and as sleek at possible so that the product can be used effectively in everyday use.
Production part designs have been detailed and transferred to the manufacturing factory, and costs are zeroed in. In our opinion, the manufacturing, packaging, and exporting logistics will remain with the single factory to minimize costs in handling and shipping. This production factory has been sourced in the electronics district of Shenzhen, Guangdong China (just outside of Hong Kong) and fully capable of handling the above mentioned requirements. This factory has been manufacturing kids RFID electronic toys, optical toys, plug and play video games, and other household electronics since 1995, and has a workforce of over 3000 employees. They are also partnered with Sega, Activision, and MGA Entertainment to name a few.
Fulfillment of orders:
Logistically, we have selected a 3rd party logistics fulfillment company in Long Beach, CA to handle the exported goods coming from our plant in China. This makes sense because the fulfillment company is in close proximity to the sea port dock. This will minimize the shipping costs.
Production delay issues may arise, which may include the fabrication of production molds, manufacturing and operation of the electronics, fit of the plastic components, and the correct color finish (black or white initially) in order to meet our high quality standards and function. We do not anticipate any major design changes, but some unforeseen changes may occur in the final product. We have currently specified a 400mA internal Lithium Ion battery, but our goal is to get a larger capacity battery to fit in the space provided in the case prior to going in mass production. We will make every effort to keep you up to date on the progress and deliver the highest quality product that you would expect, and on time.
Each Case will be examined carefully for iPHONE fit, hybrid charging functionality, and durability.
Timeline for product delivery:
The molds and tooling needed to manufacture the plastic components as well as the metal gears are 8-12 weeks. The electronic circuitry can be made a ready to assemble in 4-6 weeks. Daily capacity is estimated at 2,000 pcs. per day. Delivery of product, taking into account the tooling fabrication, molds, actual manufacturing product, packaging, and shipment from China to U.S. and our 3PL, would be estimated at early February 2014 or shortly thereafter.
