Welcome! Thank you for checking out my project page!
I’m Chelsea Rose Odhner. In 2016 I wrote two songs and collaborated on a third for Jonathan Rose’s gospel album Clear Shining After Rain. These, and other musical creations I’ve undertaken since, can be heard on SoundCloud. Now with the help of high caliber musicians the likes of Jonathan Rose, Reade McCardell, Matt Scarano, and Brahm Genzlinger, I’m bringing to life twelve songs for a debut album of all original music. There’s rock. There’s rap. There’s soul. It’s meditative. It’s uplifting. It’s sacred chant. It’s sacred imagination. It’s “ministering with music before the dwelling place of the tabernacle of meeting [i.e., our hearts and minds]” (1 Chronicles 6:32).
The vision for this album is songs that support spiritual life. My writing of these songs would not have been possible if it weren’t for the meaning I draw from the Bible and the nature of spiritual life as informed by my Swedenborgian/New Church vantage point (if you're curious about that vantage point, go here). This verse from the book of the Wisdom of Sirach is an organizing principle:
May the bones of the twelve prophets send forth new life from where they lie, for they comforted the people of Jacob and delivered them with confident hope. (Sirach 49:10)
Each song is associated with a prophet and nearly all are inspired directly from words of prophets in the Bible. Just as every book of the Bible has its own style and sentiment, so too do the songs on this album. It’s eternal storytelling in a variety of musical genres—rock, rap, soul, a cappella—for all terrains of our spiritual journeys.
This album has been developing in me since I wrote the songs that were on Clear Shining After Rain. With the enduring support and encouragement from Jonathan Rose and Reade McCardell, the seed of creating an entire album of my own original music was planted and I’ve been experimenting and writing since. My songwriting is woven through my life—in my morning meditation, inspiration as I commute, evenings with our family, and singing songs to my kids at bedtime. Gradually over time these songs have taken shape. All are written, three are fully recorded, four are in process, and the rest need your support to be able to be expanded into exceptional, sharable recordings. With the resources at Milkboy the Studio, my community of incredible musicians, and Brahm Genzlinger at the production helm, I’m pumped and fully prepared to bring this project to completion.
Booking solid studio time every month to record each song, coordinating mixing and mastering of the album, and publishing, I expect the album to be finished by 2020.
Based on the first two songs I’ve recorded and research I’ve done with others who have seen albums through the entire production process, each song will cost $1000; this divides roughly into $500 for studio time and musicians, and $500 for mixing, mastering, and printing CDs. With twelve songs, I expect this album to cost $12k. My husband and I are investing from our own budget every month to this project, and I’m thrilled to say that a donor will match dollar for dollar what you contribute, up to $5000. Altogether, I’ll have enough to see this project through to a digital download in your music library and/or a fancy-cased CD to add to your daily commute/life/work mix (and a percentage of what I raise here goes to Kickstarter for being awesome).
What is the essence of the thing? JOY. The fullness of joy. Songwriting and recording brings me immense joy and songs have a capacity for bringing joy like nothing else. The source of all joy? God’s presence: “In your presence there is fullness of joy” (Psalm 16:11). The Divine Human One is making it possible for me to fulfill my joy in the creation of this album and I hope it may support a sense of God’s joyful, strong, enduring presence in your life (however you conceive of the “God” thing)!
This project lifts sacred stories and messages into music and song to be of spiritual support. Music is a clear way I see the bones of the twelve prophets bringing forth new life from where they lie (their words lying flat on the pages of the Word), to comfort the people of Jacob (all of us) and deliver us with confident hope (is there anything so audacious as confident hope?). And we can dance while we’re at it! I suspect even heaven is singing along.
Thank you for considering supporting me in this effort! Any amount is hugely helpful and appreciated.
9-Piece Fan Blade Quilt Reward Photo
The highest reward level is $4000, limited to one backer, for a handmade-by-me 9-piece fan-blade quilt. I say it is a "symbol of the New Church" and I thought to say a little more about that. I have six more squares to make, but here is a photo of all the squares I have made so far in the pattern they'll be in:
The final quilt will be queen-sized, with a border and edging. The red is a symbol of divine love and the white is a symbol of divine truth. The Divine-Human One--God, the Lord, Source, whatever name suits you--is like a sun of divine love radiating throughout the realms of existence. All life comes from God, the infinite, and we are finite receivers of that life. So all the red fans beyond the central one are us in creation reflecting the light and love of the Divine to each other. Swedenborg can have a particularly philosophical bent in some of his writings, and one phrasing I love of this variety is the idea that God is the underlying divine reality and the power to become manifest. These two inherent aspects of God, like love and wisdom, are constant and produce all creation. So the red in this quilt is connected by the white, which reflects that eternal pulsation.
Risks and challenges
One challenge I face in creating this project is being careful with the budget so that I don't overspend on any one song and end up not have enough funds to take it through the final stages. I feel confident that keeping to the budget I've created will allow me to cover all costs. Another challenge is making time for recording and coordinating a schedule for contributing musicians. Having taken three of the twelve songs through this process already, I feel confident in my ability to do so for the rest.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
