This Kickstarter Campaign presents my new choreography, Summer’s Different, premiering April 25th at La MaMa in New York City. My company and I invite everyone to join with us in this new endeavor.
In Summer’s Different, three generations of a family feel a cataclysmic jolt when a parent reveals a gender identity that challenges the families’ equilibrium. It is the youngest member, a nine year old girl, who leads the way from conventional understanding toward a transcendent love that has room for everyone. The theatre is reconfigured to a single row of 100 seats encircling the stage, to watch up close the individual and collective struggle of this family to transform.
Summer’s Different, began to take shape with gender identity as its main theme after I read an article in the New York Times by Ruth Padawer on parenting gender fluid children. In the beautiful faces and words of these children I realized the incredible fortitude and courageousness of anyone, any age, seeking validation within their own solitary soul, when everything and everyone would prefer that their reality correspond to the status quo. Conversations with people from the trans community helped us in the creation of our characters by revealing their own transitions. Our advisor, Jean Malpas, Director of the Gender and Family Project at the Ackerman Institute, brought us still deeper into the subject. As our knowledge grows we are unfolding the ways we can discern and affirm our differences as well as our universality. I started this journey with an interest in gender identity, but months later, in the studio, the essence and intricacies of love and family have become the heart of the production.
Through this Kickstarter campaign we hope to grow a community in support of Summer’s Different. Funding will go towards supporting the artists: the fabulous cast featuring Emily Pope Blackman, Deborah Gladstein, Emma Lee, Peter Schmitz, Annabel Sexton-Daldry, Brandin Steffenson and their understudies; my inspirational collaborators Beo Morales (Music), Garo Sparo (Costumes), Joe Levasseur (Lighting) and Harvey Wang (Still Photographer), William LoCasto (Graphic Design); videographer Dion Mucciacito, and our fantastic administrative team, Lucie Baker and Ghana Leigh.
