About

Element Bender: Assault of the Steam Machines is a defense-style iOS game combining action and strategy! As you progress, you will learn the element-bending powers of Earth, Air, Water and Fire. Use boulders, earthquakes, wind gusts, tornados, freezing ice, waves, explosive runes, fireballs and much more to fend off steam-powered machines intent on destroying the Spirit Tree and extinguishing magic from the world.

Each enemy has different vulnerabilities and susceptibilities to the different elements, encouraging you to be strategic in which powers you learn and use against them! Each level requires a certain strategy to pass it, but each attempt also varies the enemy placement to keep you on your toes. As the enemies grow larger and more numerous, you'll have to think quickly to defeat them!

Will you master one element first in lieu of learning the other elements? Will you become a novice at all the elements before delving into mastery of any? The choices are yours to make. Each experience is unique, and the replayability is infinite!

Background:

Element Bender: Assault of the Steam Machines began as a concept I called "Wizards vs Robots" back in 2011. My sketchbook was filled with an old wizard using magic spells to fight off invading robots while protecting a tree or tower of some sort. I've always been a fan of both the fantasy and sci-fi genres, and thought it would be fun to combine them. I've also been a life-long gamer, and dabble in iOS development. As many gamers dream of, I have always wanted to be an indie game developer. So I got started, hacking out a game engine and moving colored squares around the screen. Once I started grad school later that year, however, I put the project on the back-burner due to time constraints.

Since the original concept, I've been inspired by the brilliant shows "The Last Airbender" and "The Legend of Korra" and also discovered the steampunk genre. With my creativity re-ignited, I felt the urge to jump back into it. With recent advances in some of Apple's development kits it seemed more doable than ever. Last fall I started creating game art and familiarizing myself with the new Swift programming language and Apple's SpriteKit. The past several months have been filled with drawing, animating, and lots of coding. As you can see, it has come a long way!

Fund Usage:

Of course, it is proving to be a far more time-consuming endeavor than I originally thought. Between grad school and web development projects, things are getting tight. I'm so close to finishing it, yet there's still a lot more to be done to put out a quality product! I'm hoping a Kickstarter campaign will help raise the funds needed to finish up the game and release it. The engine and game art are mostly complete - next comes level creation, music and sound, testing, bug fixes, and several minor enhancements. I hope to create and test at least 100 levels (after which a random generator kicks in for unlimited gameplay.)

The funds will go towards supporting me while I continue designing and developing the game over the next couple months. Funds will also pay for media licensing fees, website hosting and development, and marketing/advertising costs.

Stretch Goals:

If fundraising goes spectacularly, here are some stretch goals:

$9000 - Add variety to the backgrounds, with changes every few levels

$10,000 - Add more menu artwork

$12,000 - Add boss battles

$14,000 - Add more enemies

$16,000 - Add secret powers which combine 2+ elements

Risks and challenges

1. Development time - While the game is nearing a beta release, it is possible that subsequent bug fixes, game changes, and additional features will delay the game's release date beyond the expected Q2 2015 release. Hopefully these will all make the final product much better!

2. Stretch goals - If the fundraising goes great and we meet our stretch goals, the development of the additional artwork and game features might postpone the release date.

3. App Store delays - Apple has a sometimes-lengthy review process for new apps, which can possibly delay the game's release date while requirements are being fulfilled.
