What We’re Doing
Simply put, we’re raising money for: 1) our Feature Documentary on the
colorful era of Kodachrome, and 2) to keep shooting a final series of
Kodachrome short films. The project has an interesting construct and
constraint. You can still shoot and develop all Kodachrome film. But
only through 2010! Kodachrome was created in 1935 as a color movie
film, so we are bookending the era by shooting a series of final Super 8
(and 16mm) Kodachrome films (short docs, vignettes, and experimental
narratives). Our only creative constraint has been money. At the halfway
point of principal shooting, the coffers are dry!
Why We’re Doing It
When we heard in August that, on December 30th, 2010, the world's
final Kodachrome lab would cease processing Kodachrome, it was
clear we needed to move fast. For 75 years, Kodachrome has been
brightening the world around us with its beautiful color palette. Our
parents and grandparents shot endless rolls of Kodachrome 8mm,
still, and slide film, so we decided to step in and celebrate Kodachrome
by creating our own body of work, and encouraging others to shoot
their Kodachrome, before it was too late.
The Production Process
For the last three months we have been gathering old sound and silent
film stock along with a few Super 8 Cameras. Once we have all the
equipment and stock ready for a shoot, we invite a few actors to join us
and search out others in each city that we travel to. When we arrive we
get together with everyone and start to imagine a storyline, rehearse a
bit, then begin to roll camera. We are also shooting a final series of
35mm Kodachrome still photos. And we are interviewing color artists,
filmmakers, preservationists, and inviting anyone involved with
Kodachrome over the years to fill in the history of Kodachrome with
their first-hand stories.
How You Can Help
Any amount of backing is wonderful. We want to get as many backers
involved in our project as we can. If you are an actor, send us a message!
Please help us continue our work and allow us to really dig deep into
the story of Kodachrome over the next few months.
