Your donation will forever impact the startup of Greenwood Brewing.
Greenwood Brewing is a woman-owned brewing company where we believe in the power of the purposeful pint. In an industry largely dominated by men, women often feel intimidated or underrepresented in the craft beer scene. And while our Greenwood Brewing handcrafted ales are for everyone to enjoy, our goal is to create approachable craft beer to allow women to feel welcome in this industry. Because we believe that beer isn’t just tasty, but it is an avenue for powerful conversations and positive changes that often begin over a cold one with a friend. We want that friend to be both men and women.
I started in the beer industry (well, besides being a fan of beer - learned in my Eastern-Iowa days) about five years ago with a 5 gallon home-brew kit that I received for my birthday.
My 5 gallon hobby turned into building a microbrewery in my garage, where my neighbor, my roommate and I were brewing regularly - enjoying the 8 beers that were chilling in the keezy at all times. I fell in love with brewing. I was creating a product that brought people together and made people feel happy... and honest.
At the same time that I was home brewing, I was working as an alternative energy sales engineer in Corporate America. I was realizing that I was having some of my most important conversations over a beer. My clients, my managers, my colleagues, whenever we were "getting real" we were talking over beers at happy hour, or beers at a baseball game. And these important conversations were opportunities that I wouldn't be experiencing if I wasn't enjoying them in this social environment. That these honest conversations and progressions through my career were centered around a product, and that product happened to be craft beer. And sometimes, even though I was home brewing, I felt intimidated by the craft beer industry and feeling comfortable ordering beer.
So, I thought, I'm sure I'm not the only person feeling this way. And not only that, but I don't want other women missing out on these opportunities because she feels like she can't order a beer. Or because she doesn't feel comfortable in this environment. We need to be in this environment, having the honest conversations, and the last thing we need is for the avenue (beer) to be the reason why we don't say YES to an opportunity to be part of the conversation.
To sit at the table.
That's why I created Greenwood Brewing, with a goal to bring more women into the craft beer scene. And at the very least to make sure women feel welcome in this industry and that they are represented.
I mean, women were the first brewers of beer after all.
Our brand celebrates and empowers, to help her (and him!) achieve their greatest goals. I think we can all use a little encouragement there.
As Greenwood Brewing stands today, we are currently contract brewing at a local brewery in Arizona. Contract brewing is an incredible opportunity for us; to get our beer into the hands of consumers, understand their likes and dislikes, and uncover the way of the industry. We are so lucky and thankful that we are able to contract brew and that the existing beer industry in Arizona has made us feel welcome. Contract brewing is a means to an end though, and we need to build our own brewery.
So that's what we're doing. We're building a brewery.
We have spent the past few months finding a location, and we can't believe our perfect fit. Greenwood Brewery will be located on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix on the corner of 5th street and Roosevelt. Below you can see the drawing of our location - our patio, the bar, the beer garden and the brewery (from left to right).
This project is an infill project for Downtown Phoenix, which gets us very excited. An infill project means that it's a development of a vacant parcel that is within a built-out area of a city. Infill projects are somewhat difficult to complete, mostly because there is a reason why the parcel isn't utilized in the first place. In our case the parcel is only 2500 square feet, meaning it isn't big enough to be easily developed.
Challenge accepted. (and overcome)
We've spent the past few months coming up with a design for the property to best utilize the new Greenwood Brewery and all its components: our brewery, our beer garden (Greenwood Garden), an existing Arizona-based retail store, an existing Phoenix art studio, and a beautiful existing patio. And we're thrilled with the design.
On one side of the property will be Greenwood Garden, which will be seen as a pocket park: a luscious green oasis in the heart of a metropolitan city. The other half will be a lively patio with access to the existing retail store and art studio. The Brewery will be a gateway into 5th street, where we get excited all over again about the progression of our community. Your donations will make this a beautiful destination.
Where will your money be going specifically? We have increased our Brewery size to a 10 Barrel Brewhouse with (6) 10 Barrel Fermenters and (2) 20 Barrel Fermenters. This expansion has removed our ability to self-fund the brewery and we need your support. $68,000 is the down payment on our equipment and a little less than 10% of what we need for the total buildout of the brewery and beer garden. The remaining funds will be self-funded and financed.
Donating today will bring us to our goal of not just brewing beer, but creating a powerful position for women in this industry.
"I started Greenwood Brewing because I love making tasty beer but what I love even more is creating a product that provides an avenue for new and powerful conversation. I believe people need to encourage each other and share with each other in order to create change in their lives, and craft beer can be a vehicle for culture shift. Why? Because beer promotes social experiences and social experiences promote conversation. The right conversation can promote change – and that’s the ultimate goal."
We promise it’ll be an experience to remember.
Now, for the good stuff. Our rewards.
With your donation, we are excited to offer various rewards to show our appreciation! WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR ANYTHING! Truly we are. We can't do this without you, and even the smallest amount matters.
We'd like to show you a few of the rewards that you'll be getting when you back our kickstarter:
Again everyone, I want to thank you all for your support of Greenwood Brewing. We can't wait for the brewery to open so we can all share a beer together. Until then.

Risks and challenges
The risks around this campaign include the timeline of the brewery being built. As you can see we are in design-phase of the brewery. We are aiming for a late-spring launch, but if we have any delays, we will be looking further into the summer. We will keep everyone updated as they come, but please be patient with us if any delays come our way! We appreciate your support so much!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
