About

THE CONCEPT:

Metal Shop Fantasy Camp is not just another class — it is a life changing experience!

In this world of rapid technology, many people have forgotten (or never learned) how to create things from scratch, with their hands. Secretly we all crave a return to the basics. We work in community gardens. We make incredible meals for our families. We play our music on the weekends and fill our souls. But something is missing...

Metal Shop Fantasy Camp fills that void. We provide an entirely different opportunity:

To become a modern-day god or goddess by learning how to harness the raw power of fire and metal!

Hellfire and Brimstone, Zeus, Athena, Hades and Artemis will have nothing on you when you learn to weld.

Our classes focus on rapid learning in an intimate setting. We teach our students, whether the novice or experienced welder, to build from the foundation up while having fun and marveling as a project takes form.

Our inaugural workshop, "How to Make a Cube," serves as a launchpad for building bigger projects. Students learn all the skills necessary for metal crafting, from measuring and cutting, to clamping, welding and fine finishing. From this foundation it is possible to build almost anything out of metal.

OUR MISSION:

We are establishing a state-of-the-art facility in NYC dedicated exclusively to Metal Shop Fantasy Camp. This will allow for more intensive projects and the capacity to have more flexibility in the number and timing of our metalcrafting experiences. The workshop space will require some customization in order to ensure the best environment for metalworking:

  • proper electricity for running heavy machinery
  • plenty of lighting
  • proper ventilation
  • building out and customizing the physical space
  • liability insurance

Campers will require an array of equipment to safely and successfully complete their projects:

  • power and industrial tools (welders, grinders, clamps, etc.)
  • fabrication tables
  • welding helmets
  • safety clothing & gloves
  • miscellaneous hardware

Upon tailoring the new workspace, we will offer additional experiences focusing on more functional items and projects of larger scope. We will also host a "Heavy Metal Weekend," a three-day course in which students will construct a large-scale project from one of our custom designs.

Scheduled Studio shop hours for Campers that have completed the basic courses to hone their skills and create their own projects with the fabrication knowledge they have learned.

THE BENEFITS OF METAL SHOP FANTASY CAMP:

Metal Shop Fantasy Camp offers numerous benefits to the students who participate in our experiences:

  • learning how to build with metal, from scratch, using your hands
  • the ability to think in a 3-dimensional capacity
  • a fundamental understanding of basic building blocks and how to expand upon them
  • a discovery of unknown or latent skills
  • a deep sense of pride and accomplishment as a project comes to fruition
  • You become an official welder.

 THE REWARDS:

We have compiled an assortment of "Thank You's" for your generosity in helping us establish a new home for Metal Shop Fantasy Camp. All items are custom made in our Greenpoint shop. We have also offered a few opportunities to "do it yourself" through our various classes so you can experience firsthand the wonders of Metal Shop Fantasy Camp!

Please check out www.metalshopfantasycamp.com for a behind-the-scenes peek at the Metal Shop Fantasy Camp experience. We have also generated substantial press including an interview with , CNBC, The Fabricator magazine's Back Page, Man's Ambition, and the Examiner, to name a few.

Risks and challenges

Safety is a major concern and we always want to be on guard in making sure everyone is safe both from physical injury and air quality. Insurance is also going to be a major expense to meet along with the basic expenses of running a business in New York City.

Growing class sizes to 8 people is going to require some finessing as we are comfortable teaching up to four students at this time with the equipment we have now.
