A twist on chopsticks
Chopsticks have been used around the globe for centuries as an eating utensil. Chopsticks are so popular that 200 football fields of aspen and bamboo trees are harvested every day to produce 136 million chopsticks that end up in the trash after being used. Such production levels of wooden chopsticks represents a significant environmental challenge.
Plastic and ceramic substitutes are a partial solution to this challenge. However, plastic is not a very environmentally friendly material, and ceramic chopsticks are so more expensive to produce. Furthermore, neither plastic nor ceramic chopsticks offer the same feel and touch as the wooden chopsticks that most people seem to love.
Is there a way to enjoy the experience of using wooden chopsticks while preserving our planet and saving trees? Yes and we believe SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks is the way!
SOLIT RICEIT is an amazing eco-friendly bio-composite material made of rice husk and polymer that can be used to make chopsticks, among other products.
Why kickstarter? We need your support to design and purchase an injection mold to produce them in large quantities so everyone can enjoy eating with them!
In the Mediterranean city of Barcelona, two young Catalan engineers - Emili and Aleix - are passionately researching new ways of using biodegradable materials diverse industrial processes. Albert joins the team as technology and product development consultant.
One of the most interesting materials we were working with was rice husks - a byproduct of rice production. We thought that we could obtain a wonderful wood-like sustainable material if we mixed rice husks with an environmentally friendly polymers. Such material would have a lot of useful applications in everyday life!
Why not apply this new material to chopsticks? Wouldn’t chopsticks made from a byproduct of rice, which otherwise would go to waste, be a perfect alternative to harvesting trees?
So we began working on this exciting idea and applied our designing and engineering skills to develop this idea. After several months of sleepless nights and bootstrapping, SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks was born. A beautifully crafted pair of chopsticks with an innovative design that allows you to enjoy your food while minimizing the impact on the environment at the same time!
SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks are made of a bio-composite material that is made of 80% rice husks and 20% polymer. They are completely eco-friendly and sustainable.
As opposed to wood, SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks are 100% reusable, very resistant and completely dishwasher proof, so you can use them as many times as you want. Unlike ceramic or plastic, SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks have the same warm look and feel as wooden chopsticks – you will really enjoy eating your rice or noodles with them!
Being made from a byproduct of rice production, the fabrication of SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks has less environmental impact, reducing the CO2 emissions by 80%. And they can be made in different colors too, matching your lifestyle and mood!
The fundamental design idea of SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks is the creation of fully reusable pair of chopsticks that will be easy and confortable to use and that can be carried with you anywhere you go. We have maintained the traditional chopsticks geometry but adding an innovative and practical SOLIT RICEIT base that we call auto-click.
This innovative auto-click 3-in-1 SOLIT RICEIT base allows keeping the chopsticks in perfect form when separated, serve as a clean surface to leave them resting between bites, and keeping them together as you carry them in your bag or picnic basket.
Why we need your support
We produced our current prototypes by using handmade casting molds that allow us manufacturing only a small number of units. We want the entire world to enjoy eating with SOLIT RICEIT chopsticks so we need to to increase our production capacity. To do so, we need to purchase a new aluminum injection mold that will allow us to increase production to the next level and serve a lot more people.

Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge was finding enough supplies of the main raw material used in the creation of our product – the rice husks. To solve this challenge, we have negotiated estimated quantities and material costs with major rice producers in Spain.
Another challenge is obtaining the production resources necessary to allow us producing optimally to meet delivery deadlines of our backers. To overcome this challenge, we have stroke a deal with an specialized injection plant that will rent us the necessary equipment once we could fabricate the new mold.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
