TAS-CON is a day of board, card, and dice games with excellent, friendly people in affiliation with the Tabletop Gamers Alliance Meetup and Board Game Quest web site. Attendance is about having fun, connecting with the community, and socializing with friends. The best way to do that is to have a great venue space and a great selection of games.
It's meant to be easy-going and casual. I invite you to come and see what it's all about.
The overall theme of this year's con is Ye Olde Ancient Worlds with games that feature players building civilizations and progressing through history
Where is this?
It's at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Holliston. They have an amazing venue space.
When is this?
Saturday, April 21st, 2018. It's a FULL day of gaming - 9 AM - 11 PM.
What about food?
If we reach some stretch goals, we'll have free drinks and snacks (details below) at the event. For lunch and dinner we'll provide a list of local food. We do it this way because it makes it easier for people to coordinate their own food. Deliveries are welcome.
What happened to the Mentos?
In years past, we have offered Mentos as part of every pledge. This year, we're keeping it simple. Mentos will be available at every table.
Is this a family-friendly event?
TAS-CON 2018 welcomes everyone ages 13 and up.
Can I buy any games there?
YES! TAS-CON always features a HUGE silent game auction. Everyone is welcome to bring board games to sell. Leave your game on the auction tables, set a minimum bid (or Buy It Now - BIN price) on a provided bidding sheet and close the sale at 5 PM. TAS-CON does not collect a commission nor do we ask a listing fee. As usual, Tas (your host) usually culls pretty heavily from his collection and sells a lot of games at shockingly reduced prices at the event. A portion of the sales from Tas' collection also go to Jeff's Place, a charity for counseling children who have experienced the loss of a parent.
Any games taught?
Civilization: A New Dawn
The Ancient World
Also, once the event funds, we'll have a Google Sheet for players to schedule additional events.
Any Special Events?
7:00 PM - The 7 Wonders Tournament Game
Randomized seating, winner gets a $25 gift card courtesy of Board Game Quest. If we have more than 7 players, we'll run two games and the top 7 players will play a final game.
Big Civ Game?
Got a big civilization game that needs playing? You'll be able to add it to the Google Sheet if the campaign funds.
Why is there a limit to the number of tickets?
First, the venue has an attendance capacity limit. Second, this event is meant to stay small so that everyone can have a great time. Sometimes large events are awesome because you have hundreds of games to choose from. I'd like TAS-CON to be an intimate experience. For me, it's not so much about the million choices of games as it is about the awesome people who play them.
How much does this cost?
I've tried to structure the pledge levels so that you have some options to purchase discounted tickets if you're able to get friends to come or you're willing to purchase early and help promote it. Due to the fees from Kickstarter, it would basically cost a similar amount if we went with any ticket or registration system. This way we get the money stuff out of the way first, and we can ALL get down to playing games. Of course, your pledge should be what you feel it's worth.
Did the price go up from last year?
Due to increased costs from the venue and inflation overall, we have raised ticket prices. We're still doing our best to keep costs low and make sure that money always goes back into helping TAS-CON get better.
Can I buy a ticket on-site?
Unfortunately, no. If this event funds, it's happening. You should purchase a ticket in advance so that no one has to worry about dealing with registration and tickets and such. The venue is already reserved, but if it doesn't fund we can still cancel the venue space.
$1100 - The Aqueduct Wonder
The laborers have been hard at work to bring you this advancement in liquid delivery to the masses. This means a good selection of drinks will be available to choose from, limited to 3 per person. We'll also send out a survey to determine which drinks to get.
$1350 - The Granary Wonder
Advancements in civilization don't come any better than feeding the hungry. In addition to a drink survey, we'll send out a snack survey to make sure we have a selection that gives you enough sustenance and deliciousness to last through the downtime between ages.
$1500 - The Triumphal Arch Wonder
The final stretch goal brings a triumph of sugary sweetness. If we hit this funding level, we'll bring in some cake (a time honored TAS-CON tradition) and fund some extra signage for TAS-CON to use in the future, something we've been holding back on.
Risks and challenges
I've run a this event four times now with both hotel and community venues. My wife and I also have extensive experience budgeting projects. So far, the biggest risk is that something goes wrong with the venue. The worst case scenario is the venue closing or has some major problem such as a burst water pipe. In this case, all money will be refunded.
In the case where the venue has some inconvenience, such as a broken heater, there will be someone to contact to get it fixed. However, I won't be able to offer anything to you in compensation.
Unless bad weather is catastrophic and the venue closes, we’re still on.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
