Take a quick look at Brianna Cope and you’ll see a girl who has it all: beauty, athleticism, an idyllic life in Hawaii and the chance to be the best in her sport. While all of this is true, there is more to Brianna Cope. Brianna was born with a deformed left hand, an irreversible birth defect that took her parents and doctors by surprise.
Throughout her life, Brianna has endured teasing, bullying, and has struggled with her self-image. There was only one place where Brianna felt confident – in the ocean. Surfing became Brianna’s method for coping with the endless teasing and insecurities that plagued her school years.
Brianna has never spoken publicly about her birth defect. When she’s not in the water, her hand is often closed or hidden behind her surfboard. She carefully curates her social media images to avoid showing it. At 23 years old, Brianna is just now starting to accept her physical appearance and feels ready to talk about her hand in public.
This film gives the audience a very personal look inside Brianna’s life. She opens up about her childhood, her current struggles, and shows us a raw, unedited version of herself. As a professional surfer and role model to a younger generation, Brianna has realized that her personal story has the power to inspire and teach lessons of acceptance. Brianna wants to live by example, feeling proud of who she is and proving that she can rise above her physical and emotional challenges to pursue her dreams of becoming a champion surfer.
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?
We are in the final stages of production and we're so excited to share this film with you! Your support on Kickstarter will help us get this film over the finish line. The funds raised will help pay for our final shoot in Kauai and our post production.
For our final shoot in Kauai, we are going all in. We will be shooting with a red camera, a drone, an underwater camera and some other goodies that will help us capture Brianna's surfing and life on Kauai in the best possible way.
Post production costs add up quick so the rest of the money raised through Kickstarter will go to pay for music licensing, editing, sound design and graphic animation. We are so excited to have a multi-Emmy-award-winning editor finishing this film and some awesome tunes to accompany Brianna's surfing!
WHEN CAN YOU SEE THIS FILM?
We will begin post production on this film as soon as the Kickstarter campaign if complete. Post production will take two months. Once the film is finished, we will be submitting it to a number of film festivals around the country and the film will make its festival debut in the Spring, 2018. *psst...check out the gifts; one includes an invite to a film festival screening!!
After the film makes its festival run, it will air on a popular surf/skate/snow network and be available on iTunes. But don't worry, with a donation, you'll be among the first to see the film with an exclusive link.
ABOUT THE DONOR GIFTS
Brianna played a huge role in determining all the cool gifts we offer! Some of the gifts are hand-made exclusively by her! Check them out, we're stoked on the selection!
Katie Walsh, Director & Producer
I have been lucky enough to make my career as a sports producer; traveling the world to cover sporting events while interviewing and filming stories on the athletes competing. I have worked on two Super Bowls, three Olympics and countless other events along the way. It’s an amazing job and I’ve met so many inspiring athletes in the process. Brianna is one of the most down-to-earth athletes I've spent time with. I'm so honored to share her story.
Harris Mendheim, Director of Photography & Editor
Harris shoots, edits, is a colorist and an engineer. He's also a three-time Emmy award winner - including the 2016 Sports Emmy for Outstanding Camera Work. I'm so excited to have Harris as a partner-in-crime on this film!
Risks and challenges
Producing a film is a long and hard process. Luckily we are much farther along than many films; the majority of our filming is complete and we're heading into post!
I have a solid track record in the industry; with almost two decades of experience in sports television and hundreds of pieces produced. I also have amazing and talented friends who help me every step along the way. I have no doubt that this film will be finished and your help funding the post production will be used wisely and in a timely manner. We've got this!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
