NEW STRETCH GOAL: £4000!

A big thank you to everyone who has backed the project thus far. Due to your amazing support we have decided to increase our target to £4000! Raising an additional £750 means we can spend more on things like costume, props and post production, which will all help make the film even better!

All additional funds will be put to good use on the film! Thanks everyone.

 NARRATIVE

Rumble follows Cal, a young dedicated boxer who is profoundly deaf. In the days leading up to a big fight against his arch-rival Luke, Cal must decide between the sport he loves and a life changing operation which could provide him with the ability to hear the world.

Cal trains regularly at the boxing gym with his brother Ben, having done so since they were kids. Ben pushes him hard in preparation for his fight. Cal is focused and determined to beat Luke, a local kid who consistently mocks him for his disability. Having been for several tests, his mother takes Cal to a consultant who reveals that Cal is eligible for a cochlear implant.

Cal begins to contemplate a life with sound. For the first time he thinks about what it would be like to hear the radio, the roar of a crowd or even just his mother's voice. However, he cannot continue to box if he gets the implant which leaves him in two minds.

Struggling with the weight of this decision, Cal is inadvertently pulled in opposing directions by his mother Helen and his brother Ben. His mother desperately wants him to hear, whilst his brother wants him to box.

Overcome by irresolution and with his future vacillating, Cal must make the biggest decision of his life: to hear or fight.

STYLE, VISUALS AND SOUND

Rumble will be completely shot on 16mm film in a predominately handheld manner, giving the effect of constant movement, energy and realism. We have chosen to shoot on 16mm because of its gritty nature which will compliment both the shooting style and the dirty, sweaty locations such as the training gym.

In terms of sound, Rumble will adopt a unique sound design, specifically tailored in a way that mimics Cal's disability. Essentially the audience will experience the world as Cal does, hearing muted and distorted sounds only. Due to the lack of ambient sound, the sound design and the music score will be carefully crafted to subtly emphasise Cal's varying emotions throughout the film.

WRITER AND DIRECTOR - Matthew Hopper

Matthew Hopper has worked as a producer at Blindeye Films for over two years. He has worked with some top clients, artists and brands, including the BBC, SKY, ITV, Blur, Bastille, Miller and Nokia. In 2013 Matthew co-produced the short film 'Camelot' and has recently finished work on 'Teo', which will screen later this year. 'Rumble' will be his debut as a director.

PRODUCER - Luke Mortimer

Since graduating university, Luke has mainly worked on TV documentaries for Channel 4, such as 'Undercover Boss', 'How to Get a Council House' and 'Gogglebox'. His short film 'Dancing in the Ashes' was extremely successful at festivals across the globe and went on to win Best Student Fiction at the Royal Television Society awards last year.

PRODUCTION COMPANY - Blindeye (www.blindeyefilms.com)

Blindeye Films has produced a number of award winning short films including 'Human Beings' and the 2013 BAFTA nominated 'Good Night'. More recently they have developed two short films 'Camelot' and 'Teo' which will screen at festivals world-wide this year.

CAST

So far we have cast the incredibly talented Alexander Shenton in the lead role of Cal. Alex has recently starred as Bassanio in the Lazarus theatre company production of 'The Merchant of Venice'.

Also on board are the equally as talented John Macdonald and Josh Nixon-Hill who will pay Cal's brother Ben and adversary Luke, respectively.

THE STORY SO FAR

We are currently in the process of putting together a top team and casting some amazing talent. We will announce new members of the cast and crew as the campaign progresses.

You can donate! Unfortunately filmmaking is a costly business and we will have to pay for things like: kit, locations, food, transport, props, art design, costumes... The list is endless but with your help we will have enough to get the film made. It all adds up and a small contribution of just £5 could mean the difference between us reaching our target or not. Kickstarter is an 'all or nothing' crowd funding tool, meaning that we have to make our target or we don't get anything!* So please pledge what you can and help us reach our target and deliver this film for your viewing pleasure!

*Please note that Kickstarter will only take the money from your account at the end of the campaign, if we successfully meet our target!

Spread the word! The great thing about this is that it is free! Simply talking about our project or sharing it on Facebook or Twitter will increase the reach of our campaign and help us out! So please spread the word!

Risks and challenges

There are numerous risks and challenges that come with any filmmaking process. We hope to overcome these using our past experience and network of professionals that we have on board the project.

It may be that there are unforeseen events that mean the film has to be delayed beyond our scheduled shooting dates in April. If this is the case, we will keep you all up to date to ensure you know what is happening. Whatever happens, we will make sure the film is made to the best of our ability.
