Nothing can replace the experience of unfolding, launching, and paddling an Oru Kayak—but to spur your imagination, check out our video and start dreaming up your next adventure!
Meet the Coast and Coast+
The Coast is where land meets water, where solid ground gives way to endless horizons. We’re excited to announce our new 16’ kayak, the Oru Coast—and its model upgrade, the Coast+. Both are 16' [5 meter] long kayaks engineered for rough water and multi-day trips, with great speed, tracking, and stability.
And of course, all Oru Kayaks use patented origami technology to fold into compact boxes—small enough to fit in a car trunk, closet, or airplane. They're proudly made here in California.
The Coast weighs in at just 31 lbs. and takes under 10 minutes to unfold and setup. The Coast+ has all of the features of the Coast, plus many more: it includes ratchet buckles for easy assembly, an ergonomic seat for long paddles, thigh braces for control and comfort, full decklines and rigging for storage and rescues, and a super cool folding hatch for gear storage.
Where can the Coast take you?
Imagine a new way to exercise—as easy as riding a bike, but with ocean spray on your face, and hardly a soul around. Imagine epic trips—checking your kayak on a plane and flying to tropical waters. Or setting off on a week-long backcountry camping trip, without hoisting an ounce on your back. Imagine doing all this with unprecedented ease—taking more time to make coffee in the morning, than to pack all your paddling gear. The Coast makes all of this possible.
How is the Coast different from current Oru Kayaks?
It’s an expedition kayak, 4 feet longer than our original 12' models, the Bay and Bay+. This makes it considerably faster and more efficient to paddle—the longer waterline helps the boat fly across the water. It also has more stability and a lot more space inside—you can pack it with enough gear for days, or just stretch your legs!
Who should paddle The Coast?
We believe that adventure is a state of mind, not a level of difficulty. The Coast is capable of serious expeditions and pro-level performance. It's also amazingly smooth, stable, fast and fun for anyone—even novice paddlers, and taller paddlers up to 6'7". It's at home in water from the Pacific Ocean to your local pond.
Wherever you want to go—near or far—the Coast can help. It's a portable, light, high-performance kayak that is game for any adventure. We can't wait to see where you take it.
Since we launched our company on Kickstarter in 2012, we’ve been amazed by our community. Your support has kept us afloat, your stories have kept us inspired, and your feedback has kept us innovating. Nothing could feel more natural than launching our next adventure with you. By supporting this project, you’ll bring an innovative product to life—and help your fellow adventurers get out and explore the world.

Risks and challenges
Funding: last year we were honored to win Product of the Year from ISPO, Gear of the Show from Outdoor Retailer, and Gold at the Edison Awards, but we are still a young company on a lean budget. Support from Kickstarter will help us scale, allowing us to invest in hard tooling, materials, and manufacturing that we otherwise wouldn't be able to. We're confident that with your help, we'll make a big step forward!
Product: the steps from prototype to fully-tested, manufactured product can be long and complicated; prototypes aren't always a reliable indicator of how the final product will perform. To address this, we have built over a dozen working prototypes, extensively tested prototypes for performance and durability, and leveraged lessons from our first award-winning boat, the Bay Kayak.
Manufacturing: Making a scalable operation is another challenge we are aware of. Many comparable products have run into problems when a preliminary part turns out to be more complicated or expensive than expected. We have been building similar kayaks at the same facility for over two years, so we've had many opportunities to work out the bugs in manufacturing. From this experience, we have designed this product with manufacturability in mind. We'll be using existing relationships with contract manufacturers, retaining tight control of operations, quality, and logistics by manufacturing in our current USA facility.
Fulfillment: Many Kickstarter projects have run into shipping delays. We want to keep our backers happy so we are maintaining a realistic timeframe for scaling up production, dividing production into batches, and limiting the number of Oru Kayaks available on Kickstarter.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
