Oru Kayak is back on Kickstarter for a third time!
We launched Oru Kayak on Kickstarter back in 2012— your support let us build a product and company that’s still going strong, for which we are eternally grateful! Now it’s time for us to give back to the world — we’re officially joining 1% For The Planet. For this campaign, we’re offering an updated version of our original kayak— the Bay ST— with a custom green tree print.
This time we're back for good.
Meet the Bay ST
Our story started when designer and founder Anton Willis moved into a small San Francisco apartment, and had to put his fiberglass kayak into storage. Inspired by an article on recent advances in origami, he started folding paper models of a radical new kayak design.
The original Oru Kayak, the Bay ST, was launched in 2012 and now is in stores around the world, not to mention the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Since then, we’ve thoroughly updated the design, making it even easier to assemble, more comfortable to use, and more graceful than ever. It's stable enough for beginners, while the length and contouring make it fast and sporty for expert kayakers. There's plenty of room to stash gear for day trips and short camping excursions. Best of all, transforming it from box to boat takes just a few minutes.
Check out a quick overview of the genius behind the tech below:
This Kickstarter Gold-specific kayak has a custom tree print on the bow of the kayak and tree roots on the floorboard, to represent our commitment to the planet. We're offering this special edition skin printed Bay ST at an early bird MSRP discount and using the funds raised on Kickstarter to improve our manufacturing processes. Thank you for supporting our efforts!
How are Oru Kayaks different from other kayaks?
First and foremost, it folds. Using innovative engineering–and a little magic–we were able to design a boat the transforms from a full-size rigid kayak to a suitcase in a matter of minutes.
This trickery sets us apart from all other kayaks! It allows you to store your Oru in your closet, carry it on your back, stow it in your car, and paddle it in all kinds of water. No roof-rack, trailer, or truck needed! The boat is fast to assemble, taking roughly 5 minutes, after you get the hang of it.
Check out our quick tutorial below!
Once assembled and on the water it performs exceptionally, turning on a dime, accelerating quickly, and navigating a variety of waters quite well.
Who should paddle the Bay ST?
Everyone. And that’s not an exaggeration. This boat is made for the weekender, the fisherman, fitness freak, urbanite, road tripper, and for families, too. It’s good for both beginners and experts, and almost anyone in between. We’ve paddled the ST on ocean waves, down rivers big and small, on alpine lakes, in the tropics, and a variety of other places. Where will you take it? Where will it take you?
How durable is it?
Very durable. Need proof? Brace yourself and watch the video below.
Since we launched our company on Kickstarter in 2012, we’ve been amazed by our community. Your support has kept us afloat, your stories have kept us inspired, and your feedback has kept us innovating. Nothing could feel more natural than launching our next adventure with you. By supporting this project, you’ll bring an innovative product to life—and giving back to the world that we all love to explore.

Risks and challenges
We’ve been down this road twice before, and we have experienced some delays in production and delivery. Luckily, the Bay ST has been in production for several months already, and the only significant product addition is the custom prints. While we don’t anticipate any trouble, it is possible that introducing a new screen print could disrupt our production schedule and lead to minor delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
