We're excited to be back on Kickstarter to introduce our newest model! The patent pending, TRAK XL, is a compact and lightweight everyday carry knife & tool featuring our secure grip design. TRAK XL is proudly designed and handcrafted in the USA.
When paired with our versatile, quick access sheath system, this handy, minimal design will serve you well in any of your daily adventures.
- Added A Limited Edition Z-FiNit Blade Steel Option
- Added Two New Color Sheath Options: Olive Drab Green & Charcoal Gray
In 2016 we launched our first knife design right here on Kickstarter for: "TRAK - Titanium Runner's Anywhere Knife". Kickstarter backers loved it and TRAK quickly became a success.
The original concept for our TRAK design, was to function as a backup or "last ditch" knife for scuba divers caught in fishing line. We chose titanium because it was the perfect material for the job. These design features also happen to make it the perfect knife for runners, hikers, camping, fishing or simply anyone looking for a personal, compact utility knife, which can be carried daily, securely.
Following the completion of this successful TRAK campaign, we soon started working on our next model. Based on feedback received from backers, we knew this new model had to share the same great features as the original design (lightweight, rustproof, compact, secure, and easy to carry), but at the same time stand out on its own. We wanted something slightly bigger and with a larger cutting edge. We also wanted to improve the sheath system so that it could be mounted in multiple positions depending on desired use.
After nearly a year of developing, testing, and refining different variations, we’re incredibly excited to be back on Kickstarter and introduce this new model: The TRAK XL.
Blade Material Options:
We're offering the TRAK XL in two different steel options:
- Military grade titanium 6AL-4V - known for being ultra lightweight, twice as strong as steel, and rust/corrosion proof.
- S35VN premium stainless steel - known for its excellent wear resistance and edge retention.
Titanium - Perfect for runners, fishing, boating, scuba diving, or hiking.
The TRAK XL is available in military grade titanium (6AL-4V), which is typically found in military aircraft and aerospace. Some of the benefits of titanium are that it's lightweight, twice as strong as steel, rust proof, anti-corrosive, and non ferrous. The TRAK XL will hold up to any harsh conditions such as salt water, sweat, high humidity, or dirt without any sign of rust or corrosion. In fact, leave it at the bottom of the ocean for 100 years and it'll still look just like the day you put it there!
Perfect for Hiking, Camping, Every Day Carry, Utility, and Work.
S35VN Stainless Steel is made in the USA by Crucible Industries specifically for specialized cutlery and long wearing industrial machine parts. Known for being 15-20% tougher than its predecessor and four times tougher than 440C and 154CM cutlery steel. S35VN is the perfect stainless steel for those looking for a knife edge that can withstand repeated usage with minimal wear and less frequent sharpening. S35VN does require heat treat, which will be done by an experienced HT facility.
Larger Two Finger Design - Improved Retention - Cannot be dropped - Fits like a glove
- 2.2" Blade Length - For increased cutting ability
Titanium features single 2.2" blade on bottom edge
S35VN features two blade edges (2.2" & 1.25")
- Thicker stock material - Improved comfort
- Redesigned carry sheath - Easy access & increased retention
- Anti-Slip jimping - Improved control when wet
- Hollow ground cutting edge - Finer/sharper cutting edge
- Available in Titanium, S35VN Stainless Steel
What Makes TRAK XL Unique?
What makes the TRAK XL so unique is our Secure Grip Retention System. By placing your index and middle finger in the retention opening, the remaining fingers wrap around the knife securely in their own finger holds. This gives you a very secure, non-slip grip, making TRAK nearly impossible to drop or slip out of your hands. Wet or dry, you can have confidence when holding the TRAK XL.
We're offering the TRAK XL in our standard natural stone washed finish, however optional colors are also available (see below).
The titanium TRAK XL will be available in our new standard stonewashed "Natural" finish. If you choose, you can also have the titanium TRAK XL anodized in the following colors: Natural, Blue, Bronze, Purple, or Flame Anodized for an additional $5.00. A Cerakote black finish is also available for an additional $10. More on Cerakote finish below.
What is a Cerakote Finish?
Optional Cerakote Black:
A satin black, thin film, ceramic coating using Cerakote. You can choose this option by adding $10 to your pledge.
Cerakote is extremely durable, corrosion-resistant and provides unparalleled levels of hardness and adhesion. These coatings are also resistant to most solvents and chemicals. The foundation for Cerakote coatings is a unique ceramic technology that imparts both flexibility and excellent wear resistance to the final baked on finish. Cerakote is applied similar to automotive paint and then baked in a curing oven for up to 3 hours.
Titanium & Carbon Fiber Hybrid:
Each limited edition TRAK XL Royale, is hand crafted one at a time from aerospace grade Titanium 6AL-4V and and genuine carbon fiber. The front side (show side), features a beautiful matte finish, high tech carbon fiber, which is permanently bonded to 6AL-4V titanium using a propitiatory Geopolymer resin. The cutting edge will be the base layer of titanium.
Due to the fact that the carbon fiber cannot be water-jet cut by machine, each TRAK XL Royale is cut, shaped, and epoxied by hand. Each TRAK XL Royale takes many man hours to complete, but the final result is worth it.
The TRAK XL Royale will be limited to 50 knives and is a Kickstarter exclusive.
Limited Edition Z-FiNit TRAK:
We've received requests from backers to offer our new TRAK XL in Z-FiNit Steel. We've received very positive feedback from the backers which purchased our original TRAK in Z-FiNit. So, we're excited to announce that it will, once again, be offered in the new TRAK XL!
"K." Return Backer: "I have no other steel on a knife that has ever performed like this. I believe that in this format, as a chisel ground edge, this is the best possible steel for this knife."
*First batch is limited to only 40 knives.
What is Z-FiNit Steel?
Z-FiNit (Zapp Fine Grain Nitrogen Steel) Z-FiNit super steel is a high nitrogen, alloyed tool steel (similar to Spyderco's H1 Steel). The advantage of adding nitrogen to steel is corrosion resistance. The nitrogen frees chromium to provide this corrosion resistance. You will find this steel used by NASA for its excellent wear resistance for machining ball bearing. Z-FiNit is an excellent material for knife steel due to its corrosion resistance, hardness, and overall ease of sharpening. The Z-FiNit TRAK XL will be hardened to 59HRC by one of the world's leading heat treat facilities experienced in working with this material.
Z-FiNit has been used by many of the top knife makers around the world and has proven to make an excellent knife steel for its ability to withstand corrosion better than most knife steels, as well as, its edge holding characteristics. Similar to AEB-L, but with a much higher corrosion resistance. Unlike titanium, Z-FiNit is ferrous, magnetic, and not 100% rustproof, however it does have greater corrosion resistance than typical knife steels such as 440C. Z-FiNit makes an excellent choice for those that wanted a TRAK XL with stainless steel properties, but with a much higher corrosion resistance.
-- First batch will be limited to only 40 pieces in a satin finish at $79 each with a limited edition Kryptek sheath. --
Two new color sheaths just added:
Available in Black, Safety Orange, Olive Drab Green, and Charcoal Gray.
All of the TRAK XL models come with a thermoplastic Kydex sheath. This material (commonly found in aircraft bulkheads), is the standard sheath material for fixed blade knives. Kydex is heated until soft and pliable, then vacuum formed around the knife. Once cooled, the Kydex hardens and will fit your knife like a custom made glove. Kydex is waterproof, lightweight, retains its shape better than leather, and can last a lifetime.
The TRAK XL sheath features two eyelets at top, which allow you to attach the included stainless steel ball chain. You can also attach TRAK to a backpack, runner's arm band, belt, or anywhere you need it handy.
*Optional belt clip with mounting hardware will be available.
The TRAK XL will be 100% handcrafted in the USA. The titanium is sourced in California and then sent to Massachusetts where the blanks will be cut out on a high pressure water-jet machine at 30,000-90,000 psi. The raw TRAK blanks are then brought to our shop in Boston, MA where they will be turned into a finished product. The next step is to move on to the Kydex thermoplastic retention sheaths, which are also made one at a time, by hand. See below for more information on the making of these sheaths. Finally, the knives are color anodized or painted, inspected, sharpened, and shipped.
At the end of this campaign all backers will receive a "backer survey" via email approximately two weeks after campaign ends. This survey will ask for important details such as your shipping address, color choices, add-on items, etc. You do not need to do this now. Just select your desired reward tier and we will collect all the other pertinent information at the end of the campaign via these backer surveys. We cannot order materials until the majority of these surveys are returned back to us. Getting these back to us on time allows us to keep this project on schedule. Please see project timeline below for project schedule.
If ordering multiple rewards or optional add-on items, simply combine the different reward tiers or add-on items together. Kickstarter will not allow you to choose more than one reward tier. So if you want to select items from different tiers, just combine amount from each tier and pledge this total amount in any single tier.
If you want two items: 1 Titanium TRAK XL ($45) + 1 S35VN TRAK XL ($45) = $90. Simply choose either one of the reward tiers and pledge the full $90. At the end of the campaign you will be asked which rewards the $90 pledge was for along with color options and any other needed info.
Can be used as a money clip
Since the cutting edge of the TRAK XL is chisel ground, when placed on a flat surface like the Carbon Fiber frame, the blade edge is nested and cannot cut.
When you want to use the TRAK XL, you simply swing the blade out and grip as normal. The Carbon Fiber frame can be used as an extended handle as well and is quite comfortable. The carbon fiber will be polished on the front side and matte finish on the back side.
**Please note: The paracord knife lanyard included with your TRAK XL does not come with the titanium bead. We're still working out the details of these beads at this time. If you would like one, you can wait until the backer surveys are sent out at which time you can see a picture and order one as an option. The paracord lanyard shown in above pictures is what will come standard with your knife if shown in the selected tier.
The TRAK XL knives shown in both the campaign photos and video are pre-production prototypes. We experimented with different types of materials/finishes, anodizing techniques, and edge bevels. The final production version will be very similar to the pictures found under the sections: Blade Steels Options. Some of the prototypes seen in the video and pictures were used for reference only or to demonstrate color, fit, function, and size comparison.
Risks and challenges
This will be our 7th project that we have launched and managed here on Kickstarter!
(The Fly Pry, The Fat Fly, The Dice Tool, Two Bit Fly, TRAK, TACK)
Our last TRAK campaign was a record breaker for us, with nearly 1200 backers! We hope to break that record with our improved design: The TRAK XL. A knife we're very excited to introduce to our Kickstarter family. With your help, the funding received for this project will allow us to get better pricing on raw materials, as well as, meeting minimums on water jet services for cutting of the raw parts. It would also allow us to order the many consumables required for a project of this size such as sanding belts, anodizing supplies, and most importantly, tooling,
We feel that the risks associated with this project are very minimal and fairly low. We've put together a very experienced team and have already gone through the build process with our current prototypes and suppliers for this project.
We have used our suppliers in the past and have established relationships with them. The only foreseen challenge would be if this project happens to go viral and we receive more orders than anticipated. While TRAK XL will be hand crafted, if the demand exceeds 1000 pieces, we're currently making plans to have the sheaths made by an outside company that specializes in Thermoforming and molds. Regardless, TRAK XL will still be made by us here in the USA. We'll keep you updated on project developments or of any unexpected delays during our weekly updates. We have done our homework and do not anticipate any other risks or challenges.
Thank you for your continued support, which allows us to bring our creations to life.
