First, a synopsis about my political satire I wrote for the web site:
Sometime in the not-so-distant future...
the birth of Real America is not without complications
In 2018, Gov. Lawrence C. “Demon Seed” Bowie of the Real American Republic of Texas is in a political fix because his ‘War on the Poor’ tax plan isn’t working. Militia leader Col. Rufus T. Fairbush wants to replace Bowie by the bullet or ballot while eliminating the idea of government. The career of conservative reality televinet producer Jason Bravtart is in the dumps following the cancellation of The Real Homeless of Malibu Beach and billionaire speculator James Frimmer seeks another big financial score to spread his political influence. In California, Penelope the Psychic is forced to be a confidential informant for the mysterious Mr. Jones, the most feared security operator in Real America. And the Real American Party, the new and most powerful political force in a fractured country, promotes the Galtian Imperatives as a magical path to“prosperity for all.”
When Bravtart devises a trailblazing entertainment and investment scheme for a public execution televinet network, the Execution Channel changes the path of Real American history and reaffirms the awesome, faith-based power of the Galtian Imperatives.
Welcome to the satirical universe of The Execution Channel: A Political Fable. This witty and provocative novel is fantastical in its imaginative scope and will leave readers wondering: just how REAL is Real America?
Now about my proposal: To borrow from that sage philosopher Blanche DuBois, I am depending on the kindness of friends, strangers, acquaintances and kindred spirits I've yet to meet to assist me in this next stage of the adventure.
The Execution Channel: A Political Fable is my novel and it's been a demonic possession I've been exorcising for the past 16 months. This is a self-publication project and I am raising funds to have a smart-dollar marketing, social media, and public relations infrastrucure in place to increase reader and market awareness about the book.
The timeline for this project is targeted for late-June to mid-August of this year (2013), the first four to six weeks after the book is published and available for sale.
First, about 1/3 of the funds will help defray some of my out-of-pocket costs for a professional, eye-catching book cover (which is already done and you can see as the project icon above), professional editing, book design, and purchase of 100-150 books upon publication to send to reviewers, select media folks and to sell directly to local, independent stores (it's extra work for me but they get the ability to return unsold books and I get a slightly higher store sale royalty).
Second, about 2/3 of the funding request will cover costs for: maintaining a low-budget but functional web site (which is already up); a local creative agency on a low-cost, high-value social media campaign; a local publicist with big city book industry talent and connections to create to select media target list, send out press releases and book copies to this group of reviewers and media people (to stir up more free media interest); a few strategically placed web ads (if possible); and expenses for me to stop at local book shops throughout the region to sell the book.
The critical time to spread the good word, get free media coverage, and increase reader interest is when the book is launched. I plan to start local with free media coverage (web, print, radio) and build from there (I already have print and radio appearance interviews lined up).
Self-publishing isn't easy as authors who seek even a modest level of commercial success or to reach readers must become a multi-faceted entrepreneur (pricing, selling, marketing, and public relations). But writers themselves are changing the industry by leveraging technological advances (low cost of on-demand publishing), social media and their own ingenuity to create a new publishing model.
I am no novice when it comes to creating buzz about my book. In addition to a diverse journalism career, I have been a communications director for an software company, an account executive for a national higher education public relations firm and taught television advertising production at the University of New Hampshire.
I don't need a Madison Avenue budget but increasing reader interest and awareness on hope and ingenuity alone won't go far. Your generous donations will provide a strong initial push. In fact, this Kickstarter proposal request is the first step in developing a foundation to increase interest and awareness.

Risks and challenges
I've given a great deal of thought of this question and can't seem to find a great deal of risk to completing the project. The key to success (increasing interest, media buzz and sales) is timing the book's release with a focused marketing effort. If I have the money, I know exactly how it will be used.
For example, the manuscript is complete and is undergoing a final professional copyediting and proofing process. More than 16 months of creative sweat equity has already been invested. The book cover is done and a time table has been set for publication.
Thinking and acting like an entrepreneur is vital to reach even a modest level of commercial success for a self-published novel of this genre (satirical fiction). I've done a fair amount of research on self-publishing and I have learned that early stage marketing is critical to getting the word out and creating some buzz (this is the former public relations account executive in me talking.)
Depending on what level of funding comes my way, I have a Plan A, a Plan B, and a Plan C and will develop Plans D & E if necessary to fit reality and a budget. If nothing else, I will be flexible and unafraid to innovate on the fly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
