This project is very exciting and meaningful to "our KIDS" and us here at FanFaire Foundation, where SCIENCE & MUSIC intersect.
"I love for my children to see greatness in other kids. It shows them what is possible when talent is combined with hard work."
- a parent at a KIDS Playing For KIDS performance
We're done producing our DEBUT CD "KIDS Playing For KIDS: Classical N Jazz" by KIDS who love music and science. It's a beautiful, professionally recorded and designed album produced so that their awesome music-making can be shared with our communities and the rest of the world. Excellent audio, great music, performed by prize-winning kids whose playing sounds soooo grown-up, and soooo like they're really headed for stardom!
It is hoped that this debut CD album featuring ten of the program's thirty participants to date, and the live concert performances being planned to promote both the CD and our "KIDS Playing For KIDS" program will INSPIRE young people to ASPIRE to shoot for the stars in everything they do!
Released just in time for the HOLIDAYS!
This CD makes a wonderful stocking-stuffer
and a GREAT GIFT for all OCCASIONS!
BUY THE CD and help support "KIDS Playing For KIDS."
Most all the CD selections are pieces the kids have performed at our free "KIDS Playing For KIDS" community concerts, a one-year old MUSIC PROGRAM for children that's made some headway.
But being a young, 3-year old 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with limited resources, yet intent on achieving results, we need your help to offset the costs associated with CD production and post-production, marketing, promotion, and distribution, to make our 2013 "KIDS Playing For KIDS" live concert series happen, and to help us bring the program to schools in San Diego County where we can have an even greater impact on our communities!
So, please make a PLEDGE in your name or in honor of a friend or a special person. With your help we can together NURTURE through MUSIC the kind of CREATIVITY that, as you will realize as you read on, can grow the enlightened and science-savvy communities of tomorrow!
About "KIDS Playing For KIDS"
Recognizing the POWER OF MUSIC to ignite the imagination, break barriers between peoples, and exalt the human spirit, FanFaire Foundation in late 2011 launched
The program nurtures musically gifted children (ages 6 to 17) who also love science and math in the hope that they can serve as role models for other children. The one-year old program provides them with solo and ensemble performance opportunities at various venues throughout the year, and alongside professional artists whenever possible, thus enabling them to creatively express and share their love of music with children of all ages while building their self-confidence as performers.
The concerts are always a BIG HIT with audiences who come away from the concerts awed by the kids' amazing talent and convinced of the program's value to the community. Below are some of their testimonials:
- [I liked] the quality of the music. The poise and presentation by the young musicians were simply marvelous. I wish them the best and thank you for all the work you do for a very worthy cause.
- I love for my children to see greatness in other kids. It shows them what is possible when talent is combined with hard work.
- We attended the KIDS Playing for KIDS concert in Carmel Valley Library. It was such a wonderful experience for me and my kids! I think to qualify to join your group will be a great goal to keep my kids motivated and work harder to achieve it.
- It is inspirational to see such academically gifted young people being so free, relaxed and beautifully expressive in the musical art form!!
- Fabulous! Please continue to offer us the opportunity to encourage these young talents.
- I like their sophisticated skills most! I have been listening to classical music CDs, but none can compare with my experience sitting here listening to these young, outstanding artists playing.
- Incredibly talented and gifted young performers. Wonderful program.
- I attended the one at the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club and was extremely impressed by the talented children. I would love to bring my grandson to the performances as he is extremely interested in music.
Indeed, all of the KIDS Playing For KIDS concerts are a form of community service! Since its launch in October 2011, the program has held more than 30 "KIDS Playing For KIDS" events - ALL FREE! held in communities ranging from the under-served to the upscale, at venues that have included the libraries in San Diego County from Logan Heights to La Jolla, the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club, and the Orange County Museum of Art. [Scroll down to see a summary listing]
In addition to being presented at community concerts, the KIDS are encouraged to excel in their studies and to value community service. In fact, all of the KIDS are top competition winners; some have performed internationally and at world-class venues such as Carnegie Hall, and most all of them engage in one or all of the following activities: tutoring fellow students, volunteering in their schools' community programs, and playing their music at hospitals and retirement homes.
The roster of "KIDS Playing For KIDS" has grown from a handful to more than thirty. The list continues to grow as inquiring parents seek relaxed but confidence-building, non-competitive but quality performance opportunities for their gifted kids, leading a staunch supporter to suggest: Why not produce a CD album that would introduce the "KIDS Playing For KIDS" program to a wider audience, showcase the KIDS' musical talents to the rest of the world, and generate funds that will support the program? And so we have!
MUSIC nurtures the kind of CREATIVITY that makes ROCKET SCIENCE possible!
MUSIC is a great and FUN way to NURTURE among the young the kind of CREATIVITY so badly needed in our competitive, increasingly science-based society. And these kids prove it. What's more, history is on their side. For while music is obviously not rocket science, history has shown that it can make rocket science possible! What better time than these days of ruinous budget cuts in K-12 music and science education for us to go back in recent history and...
How many of us know he was also a musician? He fell in love with the violin and learned to play piano at age 6--long before anyone thought he would amount to anything, years before he learned his science and math. He played both instruments, but most especially the violin, almost to his dying day.
Among Einstein's many memorable quotes are those on music. They show how much music meant to him, perhaps even more than his famous equation E=mc2 ever did:
"If I were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often think in music. Life without playing music is inconceivable for me. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music. I get most joy in life out of music."
"The theory of relativity occurred to me by intutition. And the driving force behind this intuition is music. My parents had me study the violin from the time I was six. MY NEW THEORY IS THE RESULT OF MUSICAL PERCEPTION."
"The greatest SCIENTISTS are always ARTISTS as well."
"A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit, and a VIOLIN - what else does a man need to be happy?"
As you saw in the video above, MUSIC is the common thread that ran through the lives of other great scientists, true CREATIVE GENIUSES who made the landmark discoveries of our time.
Obviously a star musician, he modestly called himself a Sunday composer even if he was one of 19th century Russia's "Mighty Five," the group of amateur nationalist composers who set the trend in Russian music. Did you know he had a day job? He was a star organic chemist/MD who co-discovered an important chemical reaction that bears his name, and he may have been one of the first to LINK cholesterol with heart disease. Like Einstein and other great men of science, Borodin learned music and played a variety of musical instruments at a very young age. There are many others from the past and the present who personify this creative convergence of music and science.
Back to our project...
If the CD or the live concert performances inspire kids to say to themselves, "Hey, if they can do it, I can do it too!" isn't this a great and easy way to help build the base from which will spring the creative leaders and enlightened communities of tomorrow?
WHY THIS KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN?
The logistics of producing a professionally mastered and packaged CD album and staging live concert performances can be daunting, especially for a young all-volunteer nonprofit organization that operates on limited resources and is funded primarily by individual donations.
How your contribution will be used
We need your help because, while we were able to accomplish the recording, mixing and mastering of this beautiful debut CD through the generosity of the Ikezi Music Foundation, which also provided the Bösendorfer Imperial 290 Grand Piano and the Lautenwerk lute-harpsichord that the kids were honored to play, we need to offset such post-production expenses as replication, packaging, promotional materials, and to cover the substantial costs of marketing, publicity, advertising, and distribution.
Moreover, funds raised through this campaign will be used:
- to promote the CD through the series of KIDS Playing For KIDS concerts planned for 2013 at various venues throughout San Diego County and beyond
- to help bring "KIDS Playing For KIDS" events to more SCHOOLS in the school districts of San Diego County. We have accepted an invitation to one SCHOOL EVENT in early 2013. If with your support, we reach our Kickstarter goal we will be able to spread the LOVE OF MUSIC to more children throughout the year and hopefully inspire them to "shoot for the stars." We plan to do this by working with the schools through PTAs and music teachers.
These concerts are always FREE and OPEN to the public. But there are substantial costs involved in staging these events. Funds raised through this Kickstarter campaign will help pay for the following:
Venue Rental / Insurance
Our efforts to secure venues at discounted rental rates or through sponsorships and community partnerships meet with varying degrees of success, as venues differ in their use policies. Some venues also require that we carry event insurance and have their pianos professionally tuned.
Piano Rental / Delivery / Piano Tuning / Insurance
As the above video shows, a good number of our kids are exquisite pianists. Unfortunately not all venues have concert pianos, in which case, we have to resort to renting one. Sometimes we are able to find donors who will sponsor the rental. But there are times when we are not so lucky. The cost of renting a baby grand ranges from $650 to $1000, depending on the model and availability of the piano. In addition, the cost of delivery, tuning, and property insurance, which can be a huge amount, must be factored into the cost,
Marketing and Publicity, Program Printing, and other costs associated with event planning and implementation. We have the talents and the enthusiasm, and a program that has picked up quite a bit of momentum. More and more parents are asking: how can my child join? But still, we need to be better known. Limited resources have set a lid on our marketing, advertising and publicity efforts. Kickstarter funds will definitely help us allocate a bigger percentage of our funds to this very necessary part of any community project.
So, yes... WE NEED $$$!!! Every dollar counts.

Risks and challenges
The challenges are great but the risks are relatively small! Over the past three challenging years, we have built our organization with limited resources, an unpaid staff, and the much appreciated kindness of loyal volunteers--and have, we are proud to say, some achievements we can write home about. As alluded to earlier, the biggest challenge has had to do with finding ANGELS ready and willing to sponsor or underwrite our programs, "KIDS Playing For Kids" not the least among them. We also faced unique challenges in "branding" our organization, but our efforts have paid off in terms of greater name recognition. Thus we are well on our way to fulfilling our mission of NURTURING CREATIVITY through music among the young. Our events have a near 100% success rate. To date, our hard work has been blessed with a measured amount of good luck: we have never had to cancel a "KIDS" event, or any of our events for that matter. Just take a look at our TIMELINE:
