About

Support our race season 2015/2016 for the longdistance races with the sleddogs

Our goal is to be part of the long-distance race Iditarod in Alaska - the longest sleddog race in the world.

For this kind of adventure we need to prepare the dogs and me for the extreme cold temperatures, strong winds and long distances.

Therefore we plan to compete in sleddog races in Scandinavia the next years. During that time it is important to build confidence and trust in your dog team, to learn more about training and racing dogs in long-distance races and to prepare myself for the challenge.

With your donation for our race season 2015/2016 we are able to train and to race in a more professional way. For the upcoming season we need for example a new sled, a new trailer to travel safly with the dogs and your donation will as well help us to finance the starting fee for the races.

To reach our long-term goal we have planned different steps:

1. We will join several races up to 500 km next winter

2. During the next winters we will qualify us for the longest race in Europe  - the Finnmarkslöpet in Northern Norway - total lenght about 1000 km

3. Participate in the 1000 km race

4. After that we are ready for the Iditarod in Alaska

Where are we living and training the dogs?

Our home is based on a wonderful lake in Swedish Lapland at the Arctic Circle. From December on we have great training conditions there, in November we often need to travel in search for snow. But that is the fun part - being on a trip with your dogs, enjoying the freedom in the North.

I really enjoy that - and the dogs even more so because we spent even more time together.

And why am I doing that?

To be outside with the dogs feels like pure freedom!

They live in the "now" and I always try to learn from them. At the same time you are out alone in the nature. You have to make your own decisions and you have to live with the consequences.

To share so many experiences with your dogs in the Arctic Nature is an indescribable feeling.

Who is part of the team?

Of course, the dogs are the main part of the team, the focus is on them - all the time. If you want to get to know each dog a bit better feel free to visit my Blog Arctic Lifestyle for a short introduction of each dog.

Another important part is the trainer of the dogs, that´s me - the musher. I always try to prepare them for all possible conditions.

That could mean:

• that I go for a run with them when we have really bad weather
• or that I try to go with them through open water
• or open the trail with the dogs when we got new snow
• or to run in different areas like forests, mountains, lakes, rivers,...
• or to go through tunnels...

You see, I could go on for a long time. But I think you got an idea about the training :-)

Besides mushing I´m educated Wilderness Guide and run together with my wife Johanna a tourism company where we organize travels to Scandinavia.

Johanna is the coach of the musher and the brain of our team.

She motivates me to train myself more so that I´m prepared for the winter season and she is the main-masseur of the dogs - they love it!

And this winter we have an extra hand - Mat will help us to train the dogs and he will be my super-handler during the races.

He is originally from France, working there as ski patroller in the Alps. He visited us this summer with his wife Jodi during their cycle trip through Scandinavia. He fell in love with one of the dogs - Sielken - so he decided to come back for the winter.

"Thank you, Sielken!"

To reach your dream you need good support and great cooperation’s.

Besides a good training the dogs need the best food that they can get. We feed our sleddogs with meat, fish and extra minerals/vitamins. We are so fortuned to have the producer of the dog food really close to us. So we can see how the food gets produced.

Big thanks to Pondus Dog Food in Överkalix, Swedish Lapland.

Another big thanks goes to the two kennels we have a cooperation with - Cold Nose Huskies and Elwetrische Huskies.

Why the title wholehearted mushing?

Wholehearted mushing means to me that the dogs are in focus and that races are more about the journey than the finish result. (Of course, I´m a competetive person and I like to have a good result but always under the terms of the dogs.)

Happy dogs - happy musher :-)

I hope you got inspired by our story and that you want to support our race season 2015/2016. I´m looking forward to keep you updated about our life with the dogs and and to welcome some of you in our kennel in Miekojärvi, Swedish Lapland.

Risks and challenges

When we can realize our project with your help there are still some risks:

- It could happen that we can´t join a race as planed because of an ill musher (that´s me, the person who is driving the sled). That is not a big deal, because we plan to join several races next season. That means we will get the opportunity to race and to develop our team further in any case.

- A dog gets injured and can´t follow with on the race. This is never fun, especially not for the dog – luckily it doesn´t happened so often. But the dogs are competitive athletes so the risk of a strain or torn muscle is relevant. This year we have enough dogs in training and we have a great cooperation with Cold Nose Husky, so even if 1 or 2 dogs need to recover instead of racing we can join the race.
