About this project
Timbrr- Cedar meets technology in this gorgeous machined, hand finished stylus for your tablet.
Each Timbrr is unique to the grain of the tree it was born from. This stylus brings the warmth and natural feel of wood with the aroma of cedar to your finger tips as it is fueled by its copper core and capped with a capacitive rubber tip.
The silicone tip is removable so that Timbrr lasts you a life time.
It helps you interact with your tablet as you type, tap and draw anything from your imagination!
We specially select each board based on its grain, coloring, texture and finish…which is grown here in California.
Its really important to us that we use the best material for our product.
Once we select the wood we begin the process of making Timbrr. We chop them boards down into smaller more manageable sizes. Once we cut them down to size we clamp them together to keep the cedar straight as an arrow. When they reach the right humidity level, we’re able to take our next steps.
On the shopbot it makes quick work of cutting out beautiful planks of cedar. We cut them down, like a traditional pencil making process and make them into perfectly flat pieces. Once we have flat and squared pieces, begins the process of cutting the inside and outside of the boards with the Shopbot.
When the final CNC step is finished, we trim them out and finish them by hand in our little shop here in San Mateo, Ca.
Taking special care to notice every little detail…grain, edge, finish and feel, but also has our hand stamp on each one, our fingerprint.
Jon and I are Industrial Designers and Makers at heart, love to design and make things for our friends and family. We also care very much about our community of people and the environment around us. The problem with many of todays products and accessories is the waste and use of harmful materials. So we designed Timbrr, to be made out of high quality materials, authentic and pure as well as keeping mother nature in mind. We kept it natural to bring out the aroma of the cedar and most importantly encourages the wood to patina over time, so that each Timbrr is unique and special to it's owner Our design, attention to detail and craftsmanship helped us create a product worth sharing with you.
Our community and Environment around us is an important part of this project….making sure that Timbrr is made 100% in California is important to us. The Cedar is grown, harvested and milled in the Sierra Nevada foothills and then purchased at a local hardwood shop. We reuse the scrap to make things like Soap and Incense. The untreated copper is made in California and then milled locally by a machine shop. The natural silicone tip we got a few samples from China, but have identified a local Manufacture that can make it for us instead.
Risks and challenges
To make Timbrr real there are parts which have upfront cost, machinery, set up, time and minimum order quantities. With your support we will be able to continue working with these local companies to make Timbrr a reality.
Securing space and time with a manufacture here in California can be challenging. There are plenty of places to work with, but as demand for local made goods increases, availability and space to work with these makers can be a challenge. Replicating some of the specific materials needs to make parts like the silicone tip, also have a development and lead time to verify the quality and functionality.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
