Dear Friends, Followers & Family of The Lotus and the Artichoke...

I've been meaning to write to all of you, the super duper backers from my very first Kickstarter project. You were part of the crew that made my cookbook dream come true. And most of your names are even in the back of the first edition of the cookbook in English. How cool is that?!

Guess what? I'M BACK ON KICKSTARTER!

The crowdfunding campaign is going AWESOME! We've got over 600 backers, and the project crushed it's funding goal in 7 DAYS!

You've got to at least check out the VIDEO and read the fun updates.

There are actually ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT! If want to support me & get great rewards... NOW is the time!

After 2 successful Kickstarter projects and 2 internationally celebrated cookbooks, The Lotus and the Artichoke is back on Kickstarter! Earlier this year, I returned home to Berlin, Germany after 10 weeks in Sri Lanka – exploring the cities, mountains, coasts and countryside, eating and cooking with the locals everywhere, and riding lots of buses, trains, rickshaws, scooters and boats all over the country.

Since then, I've been recreating the insanely delicious eats, writing up new recipes inspired from the trip, spending hours at my art desk and computer with the illustrations and design, and photographing all the dishes for my next cookbook:

The Lotus and the Artichoke - SRI LANKA! A Culinary Adventure with over 70 Vegan Recipes

  • 144 pages – with over 50 full page color photos
  • Stories, art, and recipes inspired by 10 weeks of travel all over Sri Lanka
  • Explore diverse Sri Lankan cuisine from the capital, countryside, mountains and coastal towns, including South Indian Tamil specialties from the Northern and Eastern regions – only recently accessible since end of civil clashes in 2009

German Cookbooks & Berlin Dinner Party (& TVZ)

The German printed cookbook

The German version of The Lotus and the Artichoke - Vegane Rezepte eines Weltreisenden arrived from the printers on May 31st, 2013! The 2nd printing of the English edition of The Lotus and the Artichoke - Vegan Recipes from World Adventures was also sent directly from the new printers in Freiburg, way down south in Germany's famous Black Forest. (Oooh, Der Schwarzwald!)

This shipment of 1500 books (out of a total 5000 printed) was delivered to my storage facility here in Berlin. The other books went to my new publishing and distribution partners, Ventil Verlag & Kochen ohne Knochen.

I mailed over 250 cookbooks in the last three weeks: including Kickstarter rewards, pre-orders, and recent orders from lotusartichoke.com. It's been an incredibly busy, exciting time around here at Lotus Headquarters!

It's not too late...

If you – or anyone you know – missed the 1st and 2nd Kickstarter campaign, or otherwise still want a printed copy of The Lotus and the Artichoke, here's where to go:

The Lotus and the Artichoke - Vegan Cookbook (ENGLISH)
The Lotus and the Artichoke - Veganes Kochbuch (DEUTSCH)

Backers, If want to download either the English ebook or German ebookespecially if you somehow didn't get your download link, or want a different language version (free!) – please send me a message and I'll help you out.

Were you expecting a German printed cookbook or other reward and didn't receive it? Please send me a message or email. I will figure out what happened and correct the situation immediately. I made special arrangements with many of you (for pickups or add-on rewards) and I want to make sure you got what you were promised.

I'm Feeling the Love...

Especially on The Lotus and the Artichoke Facebook Page. Thank you again, so, so much for your generosity and your gracious comments. This project would never have been successful without your help and support.

The Dinner Party in Berlin

Check out the photos below from the Vegan Dinner Party in Berlin on Saturday, June 8th, 2013. The 5-course vegan meal was a special reward for certain German Cookbook Kickstarter backers who generously pledged to the project. (One of them was even kind enough to offer her kitchen and spacious, gorgeous apartment for the event. Dankeschön!)

We enjoyed 9 recipes from The Lotus and the Artichoke cookbook:

All in all, it was about 10 hours in the kitchen and 4 at the table with the guests. Meeting great people, yummy food, talking about travel, languages, the city, and more. A pretty awesome way to spend a Saturday, if you ask me.

Lots of Lotus Love,
Justin

German version cookbook goes to print!

Hello Kickstarter backers!

The German cookbook is getting printed today!

I'm thrilled to announce that today the German version of my vegan cookbook of recipes inspired by my travels to nearly 40 countries went to print! Thank you again to all of you who helped make it happen.

The Lotus and the Artichoke - Vegane Rezepte eines Weltreisenden will be arriving from the printer on 31.05.2013. I will be sending the cookbooks out immediately to all backers receiving German cookbooks from both Kickstarter campaigns. Are you excited? I am!

Along with the German 1st edition, I'm also having the English cookbook reprinted – with a few improvements and new art which is also in the German edition. This time I'm printing over TWICE as many books: 3000 German and 2000 English cookbooks. Holy tofu, that's a lot of Lotus love! I really have my work set out: Promoting the cookbook, getting it into more stores, connecting with more readers, and working with my publishing partner to distribute and market both books. I'd love to have your help, too...

If you know anyone who should get to know The Lotus and the Artichoke, please send them to The Lotus and the Artichoke on Facebook and to lotusartichoke.com to find out more about my project and the cookbook. It also really helps when you Share my posts and Like pictures and updates on Facebook.

It is still possible to pre-order the German cookbook...

Das Kochbuch vorbestellen: Send me a message (or email: lotusartichoke@gmail.com) if you (or someone you know) would be interested. Btw, the website is still the best way to order the English cookbook.

  • REMEMBER: All cookbook orders (and all cookbook rewards) include the bookmark and cool (5) sticker set!

I still have some T-shirts and tote bags. I'd like to offer them first to Kickstarter backers. There are just a few green shirts with the Globe and Banners art, and a few grey and a few black shirts with the new Hamsa Hands design -- in sizes S, M, L and XL. The tote bags are black with white Hamsa Hand graphics. (See below) Please contact me soon if you're interested. These are going to go fast!

The German cookbook ebook should be ready for download in the next 2 weeks. I'm making more improvements since rewriting many of the German texts and adding artwork to the cookbook recently. I'll be sending out download links and letting you know. Thanks for being patient... I want to get you cooking as soon as possible!

What's for dinner? This weekend I'll be posting a new recipe on lotusartichoke.com and some stories about my short visit to Rome last month. Keep an eye out for it... especially if you like artichokes! :-)

Liebe Grüße,
Justin

German Cookbook - Back on Kickstarter!

Hey Kickstarters!

I've been super busy preparing for the release of the German edition of my vegan cookbook. Julia has finished her fantastic translation of the recipes and stories, I'm working on more artwork, and already plotting design plans. Since all of the recipes are translated into German now, I'm also working to update the German side of the website! I've also been doing promotion and public relations for both versions of the book, and getting the cookbook into local stores. Whew!

Speaking of lotusartichoke.com... I just posted about the new Kickstarter project to help fund the German edition of my vegan cookbook. The crowdfunding contributions will make it much, much easier for me to cover the expenses of printing not only the German edition, but the re-print of the English edition as well.

Note for backers receiving German cookbook rewards:
I'm doing my best to have the books printed and posted in March, as planned. Depending on my success with financing and finding a new printing partner, the reward shipment may be in April. I promise to keep you informed!

Why am I back on Kickstarter?

If you've been following these updates, you know that my project expenses were more than double my original estimates, especially after upgrading the design, adding recipes, and increasing the print run. I hoped that reaching our stretch goal of $14k would be enough to print both cookbooks. That was before the printer raised the price dramatically at the last minute. Effectively, I invested more than all of the funds from the first Kickstarter into printing 1000 copies of the English cookbook in full, delicious color, also got really nice shirts, and spent a small fortune in my 20+ visits to the post office in December. But, it was worth it...

The positive feedback and excitement about The Lotus and the Artichoke has been incredible! (Read the testimonials at the bottom of the new Kickstarter page)

Continue the adventure with the new Kickstarter campaign:

  • Do you know anyone who would like my cookbook? (English or German)
  • Need another chance to get a t-shirt or tote bag?
  • Want a cool postcard from my next travel adventure?
  • Curious what new reward surprises I've got planned?
  • Fancy a 5-course Vegan Dinner Party... hosted and prepared by me?
  • Just want to throw in a few bucks to help Grow the Global Veg Scene?
  • Want to share some love for The Lotus and the Artichoke on Facebook and Twitter?

Lastly, a sincere Thank You for making this vegan cookbook project so successful! I love getting your emails, Facebook comments & photos, and all the other enthusiastic messages.

Love and Lime Zest,
Justin
