About this project
Shadow Rabbit is a story about talking animals written for adults. Katy, a rabbit with a deformed and haunted eye, must master the power of her curse to save the world when an undead horror seeks to plunge reality into eternal nightmare. To accomplish her goal, Katy must travel across mystic realms, master dream magic, and uncover the dark secret of her own sinister origin. Murder, lies, and conspiracies among both humans and animals force Katy to question who she can afford to trust or love. The temptation to use her new power to punish humanity and its allies grows with each injustice she discovers. This is a book for grown ups with elements of horror, science fiction, and fairy tales thrown into the mix.
Who is this book for?
Shadow Rabbit has
broad appeal for adults who enjoy fantasy, fables, horror, and
science fiction. It is also for anyone that loves animals, or who is
fascinated by the power of dreams and myth. Though there is much beauty in the world of Shadow Rabbit, there are dark and graphic elements which make this story inappropriate for children.
Shadow Rabbit was once described as The Talisman meets Watership Down. I took this as a great compliment.
WHAT THE FINAL BOOK WILL BE LIKE
The current draft is 448 pages long, though subject to change after edits. Estimated small print runs of the hardcover edition put production cost of each copy at around $30. The published book will contain several maps, charts, and a glossary of words only animals have known...until now. I will try to add a few additional illustrations as well, provided that funds rise enough above my Kickstarter goal to allow it. I am hoping to create a beautiful cover with original art for the dust jacket for the hardcover edition. If resources are not available, then I will use artwork from the T-shirt design for the cover art.
The digital version of Shadow Rabbit will be released through stores online, and the hard copy version will be made available through a vanity press once I have negotiated an acceptable deal. The hard copies will most likely be printed on demand as I can't budget for anything greater than a very small print run at present. I will purchase an ISBN so that Shadow Rabbit may also appear in brick and mortar stores if all goes well.
I am also looking into producing an audio version of the book if I exceed my Kickstarter goal by enough to budget for that.
There's a blog on my web site where you can track my progress on the novel.
WHERE YOUR MONEY WILL GO
Funds will help me revise and refine a final draft of the novel. In addition to helping support me so I can finally make finishing this book within a few months my main focus, funds will also go toward getting professional help with:
Developmental editing, line and copy editing, proofreading, and purchasing miscellaneous design assets.
I will also be purchasing ISBN numbers, paying registration fees, and dealing with costs associated with getting all versions of the book listed for sale.
Marketing investments such as online advertising, developing a strong web presence, and mailing printed review copies are also planned. I will also attend live appearances to promote Shadow Rabbit at book fairs, fantasy conventions, and animal related events.
Though I can certainly accomplish what is promised after I meet my Kickstarter goal, I am very much hoping to exceed this goal so that I have more time and funds available to develop the project to its fullest potential.
My budget includes setting aside 35% of funds raised to insure that all the rewards I have promised to supporters will be distributed. So, rest assured that if you are expecting a T-shirt or hard copy of the book, you will receive it.
Production costs of rewards (with shipping):
- Soft Cover print edition: $20
- Hard Cover Print Edition: $35
- Single sided T-Shirt (front print only): $30
- Double sided deluxe T-Shirt (front and back printing): $40
Risks and challenges
My greatest current challenge to finishing a polished final draft of Shadow Rabbit (and the main purpose behind this Kickstarter campaign) is finding the financial stability to make rewrites my primary focus. Part of your Kickstarter contribution is budgeted to temporarily offset my need to scramble for the freelance assignments that put food on the table for my son and I. This will allow all my focus to go toward reworking the last third of the novel into something even stronger and more powerful than the previous drafts. My current outline, which is based upon notes from critical readers, is one that I feel very strongly about. I am counting on my cost of living during this project to be supplemented by Kickstarter funds so that my passion does not become diluted by my need to work many other jobs.
I have recently come to better appreciate the power that an experienced editor has in shaping a successful novel. One challenge I face is finding an editor that I trust, and who will work within my budgetary constraints. I am pleased to say I have several fine leads at present.
I envision of a version of Shadow Rabbit that has all the “bells-and-whistles”, such as illustrations at the start of every chapter, and other artistic enhancements. I cannot promise these within the financial and time restrictions that come with my $16000.000 Kickstarter goal, but should I exceed that goal I would like to meet the challenge of creating more artwork myself.
As stated earlier, I would also dearly love to explore the possibility of recording an audio version of the book, so that those who are without sight can easily enjoy the tale. This is too great a challenge to undertake within the confines of my modest Kickstarter goal, but should I exceed the $16000.00 goal by enough, I will look into meeting the challenge of budgeting time at a recording studio.
I am passionate about Shadow Rabbit, and I am dedicated to finishing rewrites of the book because of how much I love the story and it's characters. I feel a deep personal need to see this story in print, and to share it with others, even if that means enduring sacrifice and not seeing financial gain. For those reasons there is no real risk of me not completing a draft I am happy with, no matter what happens. Kickstarter support can just make that reality manifest sooner, and help me market a professional looking version to the world without becoming a starving writer again, but no matter what, the book will be completed. With your help, I think I can be finished within six months, but as always, the unexpected can occur. It may take me longer to complete rewrites if emergencies such as another hurricane pop up.
The ordering and processing of T-shirt and bookmark rewards will begin as soon as this Kickstarter campaign ends successfully. So, barring any mishap with postal services, those rewards will be sent out in a timely fashion with little risk involved at all.
There is always a chance that unforeseen delays occur in completing the final draft of the novel, or that negotiated rates with printing services change; so there could always be a possible delay in book print runs. I do, however, feel strongly that I have budgeted enough wiggle room to make things run smoothly as far as getting all the rewards sent out as soon as the assets are created.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
