Hi, we are Brendan and Michael, two friends who created a collector card game that uses fantasy artwork and mechanics to set and track your fitness goals.
BattleMat is designed to be played alone in the comfort of your home or at your local gym (Solo Mode); And with a friend in a competitive game (BattleMode) where you can play modifications to alter and challenge your opponent's workout and score.
For the past year, we've developed our 50-card "Starter Deck." After months of design, testing, research and sweat, we need your help to officially take BattleMat to production!
This 50-card Starter Deck includes:
- Ten (10) Intention cards
- Five (5) Rest cards
- Twenty-five (25) Activity cards
- Ten (10) Modification cards
- Set up instructions & rules
Players draw one (1) Intention card, one (1) Rest card, and five (5) Activity cards per workout/game. At the completion of each round, players also draw one (1) Modification card to adjust weight, time and scoring on some/all activities.
By using BattleMat’s inventive strategy and card combinations, the Starter Deck can produce enough workouts to do a completely unique workout every day for over one year! Over 30,000 card combinations!
At the beginning of a game, you choose your Intention card which will define the objective of your workout (Stamina, Agility, Foundation...).
Your Intention card determines the color cards you will draw from and the value of the variable cost on all cards for the game (weight, repetitions, time, special enhancements for BattleMode).
Second, you choose your Rest card which will determine the type and length of your rest between rounds as well as a Resolution enhancement for scoring.
Next, you draw 5 Activity cards. These will act as your “circuit” to be performed each round in order to unlock points.
Between rounds, you draw a Modification cards which you may use to modify any activity’s variable cost (increase or decrease time, weight and points).
At the conclusion of the game, your score is calculated based on the total value of the strength and resilience of all activities performed and any enhancements from your Intention, Rest or Modification cards.
Each card includes a description box detailing how to properly perform and activity or enhancement as well as original illustrations depicting a fantasy creature performing proper exercise technique. This makes BattleMat an approachable and easy way to learn and challenge your physical fitness goals within the familiar universe and mechanics of tabletop games.
Types of Cards
Intention: The Intention cards identify which color(s) of cards the player will use and the value of each activity's "cost variables." Intention cards also include a special 'BattleMode' ability for competing against another player.
Rest: The Rest cards identify the amount of rest players take between each round. These cards also have a special 'Resolution' ability that affects the final score.
Activity: These cards identify and explain what exercises the players perform each round. Each player draws five activities to create their workout. Similar to “circuit training,” activities are meant to be completed one after the other with no rest in between activities.
Modification: These cards are drawn after the completion of the first and second rounds and modify one or more of the activities on the BattleMat.
Solo Mode: Once a player has completed all of the required rounds, they add up all of the points on their Activity cards. It is important to remember to take into account any Modifications gained during gameplay and to apply the Resolution from the Rest card. This score will fall somewhere between 9 and 74.
BattleMode: Players complete their workouts as if in Solo Mode, however they are able to apply Modifications to their opponent's Activity cards if they wish. Once both players have completed their workout, a short game of strategy takes place. Each player’s Activity cards are able to either attack to lower their opponent’s final score; or block to prevent their final score from being lowered. Once all of the activities have either attacked or blocked, the game is concluded and players add up whatever points remain on their BattleMat. The player with the highest Final Score wins the battle.
Colors in BattleMat
The BattleMat journey began with two friends and we want to make sure we keep the experience personal and directly serve our players. So, instead of mass producing and selling inventory, we thought it'd be more meaningful to grow the BattleMat game and community directly with our players using Kickstarter.
No matter what level you feel comfortable contributing, we want to invite you to be a part of the BattleMat community by offering frequent updates regarding the campaign and our future!
The benefit and challenge of Kickstarter is that we only receive funding if we meet 100% of our goal. This means we rely on each and every one of you to make BattleMat a reality. If we don't have enough interest to fully fund our goal, no one is on the hook for the cost. This protects you and it protects us. Developing and manufacturing a new game and fitness program is incredibly expensive and while it would break our hearts not to release the BattleMat game, Kickstarter hopefully ensures it won't break our banks.
What does my money get me?
From our research and test printing, the average market value to produce a game like ours is around $35 per deck to cover the cost of original artwork, card design, packaging, quality manufacturing, digital promotion and fees.
We feel extremely confident about our price point especially through comparison with similar products in the Gaming and Fitness markets. BattleMat's Starter Deck allows for over 30,000 distinct workouts at a fraction of the cost of an annual gym membership or fitness program.
We've supported and watched many friends who have used Kickstarter to bring their passion projects to life. We know you work hard for your money and it is important to us that you get maximum value from BattleMat. So, our 'Initial Goal' covers the essential hard costs to create and print 1,000 Starter Decks at a handsome discount to say thank you for your early support.
After we reach our "Initial Goal" to produce 1,000 decks, our Starter Deck will be available at MSRP (while supplies last) so we can put your money back into the BattleMat game and community to create videos, expansions and even, one day, an app!

Risks and challenges
As with all exercise programs, when using our workout materials, card game, sites or any future media, you need to use common sense. To reduce and avoid injury, you should check with your doctor before beginning any fitness program. By performing any fitness exercises, you are performing them at your own risk. BattleMat LLC and its affiliated team members will not be responsible or liable for any injury or harm you sustain as a result of our fitness game, materials, merchandise, or information shared on any of our websites. This includes emails, videos and text. Thanks for understanding and using good judgement.
You can pledge in confidence, as we have done everything in our power to ensure the creation and delivery of BattleMat upon funding. However, the production process is reliant on many factors, all of which we are not able to predict exactly. If any problems do arise, we will alert you and act immediately to work through the issue. Our team is dedicated to tackling any problem that might come our way and getting BattleMat in your hands!
Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions, comments, or concerns regarding your rewards or BattleMat.
We are here to make this project the best it can be for all our backers!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
