Missed out on the Wee Beasties: Bedtime Kickstarter? Go to Whimsy Works to find out how to get a copy!
Wee Beasties: Bedtime is a children's bedtime book written by my wife, Andi Smith, that shows the classic monsters from fantasy RPGs getting ready for bed. It's the perfect length for bedtime - especially for those little ones with short attention spans.
These Wee Beasties are just that - wee. As a means to introduce children to many of the classic fantasy RPG monsters, we have created smaller and more visually appealing - meaning super cute! - characters that are appropriate for toddlers to senior citizens.
Here's a sample Wee Beastie, the Wee Owlbear, illustrated by Marina Neira, the artist we'll be working with for the whole book, as well as the verses that go along with the Wee Owlbear, the Wee Manticore, and the Wee Cyclops. This is a mock-up of the layout and not intended to reflect how the final page format will look.
For the initial funding, we'll be getting nine Wee Beasties created. These include the owlbear (shown above), ogre, dragon, medusa, ettin, goblin, cyclops, manticore, and harpy. We have plans for additional Wee Beasties if we exceed our initial funding.
In addition, as part of the Kicking It Forward movement, 5% of any profits we make from this project, after we account for artist fees, printing fees, and shipping fees, will be used to help other Kickstarter projects fund!

About the Author
Unlike previous Dreamscarred Press Kickstarters, this one is for our Whimsy Works division, headed up by my wife, Andi Smith. Whimsy Works is all about giving gamers a way to introduce their children to gaming. Andi is writing the manuscript, coordinating the graphics with the artist, and designing the page layout for the book.
Andi is a gamer and a mom, and introducing our kids, as well as the children of fellow gamer parents, to gaming is a passion that inspired Whimsy Works. Together we have played a variety of games, from video games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft, to our current Pathfinder RPG game set in Dreamscarred Press's campaign setting, to card games like Munchkin.
This is Andi's second book under the Whimsy Works division of our publishing company. Her first book, Grubbins the Goblin, is out and available at Amazon.
All backers, no matter the pledge, will be listed in the book in a special section thanking them for helping to make this book possible.
In addition to the ebook and the printed book, you can also get your copy signed or have a personalized autograph for your wee one! In addition, if you'd like extra copies of the enhanced eBook, just add $5 extra to your pledge for each extra copy you'd like!
We also have a limited availability reward for those who want to see gaming-related Easter eggs added to the book! We already have some fun, tongue-in-cheek Easter eggs planned, such as in the picture of the Wee Owlbear above, there are two Easter eggs - the brush is a +1 brush of cleaning, shown by the +1 on the brush, and the Wee Owlbear's cap with a d20 at the end. If you have something specific you'd like to see included, then this is the tier for your! Feel free to send us a message with what you'd like to see as an Easter egg before selecting this reward to make sure we can accommodate your request! In addition, we'll include an activity book made using the Wee Beasties that includes pages to color, word finds, and more!
At our top reward tier, you can get your own Wee Beastie added to the book! There's only going to be one of these rewards and your Wee Beastie will have to be reviewed to make sure it fits in with the other Wee Beasties and that we can write a section dedicated to it, so please contact us if you want to select that reward!
Now that we've achieved our base funding, we're working on some extra content!
If we hit $2500, we will give all backers who have pledged $10 and up access to both the eBook and enhanced eBook. This enhanced eBook will include narration by professional actor and gamer, Brian Lewis.
If you are a gamer then you most certainly are already familiar with his work as Cass/Brother Silence in The Gamers: Dorkness Rising and The Gamers: Hands of Fate, as well as Carrow from the web series JourneyQuest.
In addition, at the $2500 tier, for everyone who has pledged $20 or more, we'll be offering a print & play activity book using black & white line art from the book. This activity book will include coloring pages, word finds, crossword puzzles, mazes, and other fun activities for kids!
If we hit $3000, we will add another Wee Beastie, the Wee Yeti.
If we hit $3500, we will add another Wee Beastie, the Wee Troll.
If we hit $4000, we will add another Wee Beastie, the Wee Kobold.
If we hit $4500, we will add another wee Beastie, the Wee Minotaur.
If we hit $5000, we will offer the book in hardcover format!
With your help and support, we can unlock even more stretch goals beyond these!
Risks and challenges
I've run two successful Kickstarter campaigns and have been publishing books for over seven years. My wife has already written and published a children's book. We've already identified and made agreements with the artist to illustrate the book, have the manuscript fully written and sent off to a professional editor, and have numerous contacts in the book printing industry.
The largest challenge would be if there was a problem with the artist, but we don't foresee that as a problem and should it happen, we have enough artist contacts from years of working in the publishing industry to overcome that obstacle in the very unlikely event that it was to occur.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
