Now see XYZ in the hands of future engineers
What is XYZ?
XYZ is a construction set for any age. XYZ encourages exploration and interaction in a safe environment and engages everyone to experiment and experience creativity.
XYZ teaches the basic principles of engineering and design, actively creating new and fun learning experiences for people of all ages.
You can quickly make large structural objects with flat surfaces, encouraging you to create exciting new environments.
The sleek design of individual tiles, aesthetic visuals of completed creations and their practical uses should ensure your XYZ is in constant use and on permanent display.
XYZ is designed and manufactured in the UK.
Who Are The People Behind XYZ?
The team behind XYZ are Klayton Palmer, Charlotte Downs, Chris Verbick and James Hance. We are all materials scientists, engineers and designers. We are from different cultures, places and eras. Our combination of backgrounds weaves a rich tapestry of skills and experience that make up our company.
We work tirelessly on XYZ and are fully dedicated to its development and promotion. XYZ will be made stronger and more resilient from your investment and in turn we will continue protecting and building the associated intellectual property. Our continued development looks to establish strong branding and identify new market opportunities to maximise the potential utility for this remarkably simple and very cool product.
XYZ is now primed for the next stage of development, which is where Kickstarter and you come in.

Where will the funds be spent?
Tooling: We aim to get tooling for packaging and more tooling for more XYZ tile manufacture. This will enable us to manufacture as many tiles and product packaging as necessary over the years ahead. Should we reach our first stretch goal of £45,000 we will get more durable tooling for packaging and for XYZ square tiles, which should last a lifetime!
Tiles: More product! We will get tiles manufactured to meet the rewards from pledges made and extra tiles so that we have enough stock to place on shop shelves and meet future online orders.
Packaging: The product needs packaging and we will make enough packaging to meet the rewards, stock and future sales.
Delivery/Fulfilment: We already have the capacity to achieve fulfilment of your rewards with agreements having been put in place with the manufacturer, couriers, and our fulfilment company.
Stretch Goal and Further Funding: Should we exceed our goal, extra stretch goals will be introduced, with this extra funding helping to accelerate the development of XYZ itself and of new products from XYZ Builds, with new shapes, sizes etc being developed (see stretch goals below)
The XYZ Story:
XYZ began as a university project in 2012. The project brief: design and develop an object that empowers young users to create and invent their own environments, objects, and games. Users benefit from constructive experiences including: collaboration with peers, role play, building large structures, climbing, interfacing with other toys, and (a little bit of) risk. Our ultimate goal was to achieve this level of empowerment in a safe environment in order to garner the support and trust of parents, carers, and guardians.
After experimenting with many shapes and forms, inspiration was eventually found in furniture designs that create three-dimensional objects from two-dimensional sheets.
Iteration after iteration of concepts and prototypes were developed, with painstaking attention to variables such as teeth alignment and quantity of teeth. As we manually turned the screws on the mill to produce the first prototype panels, our little product started to take on an exciting form. Check out a video of our first exploration with the prototypes!
User studies and experimentation with the first tiles revealed that 3D printed prototypes were needed to get the best results.
If we achieve more than our target (everything crossed) we have some great ideas already in place to make XYZ even more exciting!
If we manage to raise more than £45,000, new and never-before-seen rewards will be unlocked because at this marker we will be able to get hard tooling manufactured and really begin to develop our ideas.
Sneak preview: The first of these rewards will be triangular XYZ already being prototyped! These will provide the possibility of creating amazing new geometric forms. The triangular shape rewards will be similar in pledge, availability and content to the current rewards.
Bonus for early adopters: If we get to the stretch goal target, for those of you that pledge for product early, we will also put in your reward a few triangular tiles to improve your experience of XYZ and whet your appetite for more. If even higher goals are achieved even more bonuses will go to the earlier adopters.
Other stretch goals will maybe include: different size tiles, games, and other XYZ activities which will open up exciting opportunities. If our funders blow past 50 times our target (are we planning too far ahead yet?) we would begin exploration into introducing the ability to implement Augmented Reality to gamify your builds!

Risks and challenges
We are a team of Masters-qualified designers and engineers with experience in making cool things that deliver surprising results.
We have a collective background in industries such as construction, design, manufacturing, fashion, media, print and digital graphics, and sports. There are always challenges, but our promise is that we'll rise to meet them with everything we have. Our backers will be pleased they chose XYZ, for we will make sure that they are well looked after, and their rewards arrive on-time or early.
As a team we are committed to the future of our planet, which is why we want to use manufacturers based in England to reduce the carbon footprint of manufacturing and delivery. We have also ensured the material can be easily recycled, perhaps even returning to the material stream as more XYZ! As we expand into Europe and other continents, we are committed to sourcing for local production and fulfilment to keep a watchful eye on our carbon footprint.
This commitment provides huge challenges in being able to deliver a product that competes on price with product manufactured overseas. However, we have found that for a little more financial investment the quality of the final product is noticeably superior than cheap outsourced goods.
Injection moulding tooling design and engineering is an art as well as a science. Unexpected delays can't be ruled out completely. Fortunately, we are working with experts that manufacture parts for aerospace and large industry suppliers. Just like the team at XYZ, our manufacturer is reliable and results-driven.
As engineers we felt it was paramount to introduce a "safety factor" to our delivery. Hence, we have given a conservative estimate of delivery dates to account for unanticipated complications.
When it comes to the risks and challenges of running a business, we are fortunate to be based at The Centre for Creative Collaboration in Kings Cross with support from the University of London and the London Creative and Digital Fusion Project.
Our headquarters at the C4CC provides a direct line to renowned business experts and mentors to guide us through the minefield of everything involved in starting and maintaining a business. We also have the on-going mentorship of the well respected Nobuoki Ohtani: designer, author, professor, and friend.
With this fantastic support we feel that most business risks and challenges are mitigated.
