About this project

Many young people these days don't have any exposure to the greatest invention ever made by humans -- table top roleplaying games!  As a junior high science teacher, who has time available during the summer, it occurred to me that I might be able to appeal to the OSR Gaming Community to help me hold a summer camp for young people trapped in the world of video games.

Normally I would seek out a summer job teaching teachers pedagogy, teaching summer school, or even working in a hardware store.  This year, I thought I'd take a chance and see if the community would sponsor me for the summer so I could expose 60 young people to the joys of table top RPGs over the course of five weeks.

The basic idea is that each week, I will have a morning session of six players (4 hours), a lunch break and an afternoon session of six players (4 hours.)  This will occur at a selected location like library, school or game shop.  Each night I will blog about that day's adventures. The sponsors will be able to see the victories, defeats, triumphs, tragedies, 20's and the 1's!

Players will roll up characters, buy equipment, find some hirelings and get on to the adventure!  Fight on!

The setting will be a somewhat open-ended sandbox, but I will adjust the level of guidance based upon the players. I have materials prepared and I will also use commonly available maps and adventures from a variety of OSR internet sources.

I plan to use my wide array of minis, my dungeon tiles, battlemats, props and other resources that I've accumulated over my 30+ years of dungeon mastering.

If funding should exceed the minimum level, I would expand the experience for the players in the following ways:

  • $6200 - players get their own dice and dicebags!
  • $6800 - players get t-shirts to commemorate the OSR Summer Camp!
  • $7800 - players get their own "Swords and Wizardry" rulebook!
  • $8100 - players get their own miniature figures!
  • $11000 - players will be provided lunch and snacks each day!

Of course, if the funding really goes off the charts, I will entertain holding a second summer camp, scheduled simultaneously with this one, in a different part of the valley.  I will, of course, need to find another DM, but I have several members of my gaming group who might be interested.  We'll cross that bridge if we come to it!

Thank you for your consideration!

Risks and challenges

As of now, I have not begun to get the word out about the events. I do not want to advertise or hype something that might not happen. That is a terrible thing to do to young people.

As soon as it appears that the project is viable, I will begin to spread the word to young people and parents in the East Valley (Mesa/Tempe/Gilbert, AZ) area. I have every confidence that I can get the information out there rapidly through my teacher contacts.

Additionally, once the project is viable, I will need to solidify a location (or locations) for the events. Multiple libraries, Boys and Girls clubs, schools and/or Local Game Stores are available in the area.

If funding by Kickstarter lags (the money doesn't get to me on time) I still have the financial means to purchase the "extras" for the participants, so that they won't be disappointed.
