A digital reader you can feel like reading paper manga
More than ten years have passed since ebooks emerged. Nowadays more and more people read manga on electronic devices such as smartphones, tablet computers or e-book readers. We can buy digital manga easily and read it in your own time, anywhere.
On the other hand, paper manga remain popular format for reading. Why do people prefer reading manga in its physical copy? We think that manga books still present several challenges for digital readers.
One such challenge is the double page spreads. While manga artists design layouts are meant to span across two facing pages, many digital readers are single-screen devices that may fail to reflect the intention of the creators.
Image quality is another challenge. In order to read manga on the digital devices, the document files of the manga must be converted to common ebook format, which are compressed and optimized for distribution. Drawings created by manga artists suffer from degraded image quality.
We have been enthusiastic about helping manga artists deliver their works to their fans in the highest image quality. In September 2017, we launched our first Kickstarter campaign to publish eOneBook of ‘Fist of the North Star (Hokuto no Ken)’. It is limited to a single manga series which comes pre-loaded and cannot be updated or changed. With highly acclaimed for its high-resolution display and the immersive reading experience it offers, the dedicated manga reader was successfully funded nearly 23,000,000 yen (about US$208,000).
This time, the device has been refined adding new value that allows you to swap manga titles by SD cards compatible with eOneBook.

'Naruto' is set in the world of the “Five Great Shinobi Nations.” The protagonist Uzumaki Naruto has grown up in Konohagakure, the hidden village of the “Land of Fire” which is one of the five nations. Naruto is a ninja-in-training with a need for attention who dreams of becoming the next Hokage, the greatest ninja in the village! He is struggling to graduate from the Ninja Academy and finally making it to the lowest genin ninja rank. 1. The highest-resolution manga reader ever!
In order to read manga on the digital devices, the document files of the manga must be compressed and optimized for distribution. Artist drawings have been degraded and delivered to you.
With the same resolution as paper printing, eOneBook displays the artist drawings with high contrast and sharpness. It has crisp black-and-white images, no ghosting, and seamless page turns. The world's highest level of image quality offers a fully immersive reading experience. If you compare your e-reader and eOneBook side-by-side, the difference in image quality between them is obvious.
Image quality comparison (1): Contrast and sharpness
Image quality comparison (2): "Ghost" of the previous image
2. Double-page spread like actual manga books
eOneBook is a dedicated manga reader featuring a pair of 7.8” E Ink screens. Our 2-page display format showcases the dual-page spreads with maximum impact.
3. Look and feel of paper manga
We incorporated many good features of paper manga into the eOneBook design so that you can feel completely engaged in your reading.
Look and feel of paper manga (1): Open to "ON" and close to "OFF"
You can read it without thinking about the power switch. Just open it up and start enjoying your favorite ninja story.
Look and feel like paper manga (2): Collectible digital manga
Even though Naruto eOneBook is a digital manga, you can touch it. This book-like reader can sit on your bookshelf along with your collection of printed books.
We hope you will welcome Naruto to your manga library!
Look and feel like paper manga (3): A real book with electronics built into it!
eOneBook is as large as A5-size comic book. We designed its weight is evenly distributed when you hold it with your hands. The exterior of the device is actually made of paper and even comes with a dust jacket. It replicates the feeling and reading a paper books.
Naruto eOneBook condenses the original 72 volumes into one compact volume. For those who are in danger of running out of space on your self, eOneBook allows you to add long-running manga series to your collection.
5. SD card slot for interchangeable manga series
You can swap manga titles compatible with eOneBook format and read them on one device. This is the most requested idea that we have received from the Kickstarter community in our previous project.
Are you ready to immerse yourself into the ninja story? Insert the SD card contains the entire Naruto volumes into the slot of eOneBook reader. Since manga data is not required to distribute over the internet, you can enjoy Naruto in the highest image quality using uncompressed data.
Your huge support will persuade more manga title owners to sign on with eOneBook!
6. Simple UI
Our design concept is to reproduce the feeling of reading a paper manga. eOneBook offers simple UI that allows everyone to be able to use without reading user manual.
Only six buttons to operate the reader
There are six buttons to read manga. That's it! You definitely don't need to learn how to operate it.
No annoying set up is required such as connecting to a Wi-Fi network, signing up to download contents.
Powered by four AAA batteries
Unlike most ebook readers, eOneBook device is powered by four AAA batteries (*employing rechargeable batteries is recommended). Since repeatedly charging and discharging a battery gradually degrades its capacity and its performance drops drastically after a few years, we avoided a built-in battery and adopted dry cell batteries for its power source.
Naruto eOneBook is beautifully decorated with cover art featuring the beloved ninja, Naruto, and his archrival, Sasuke. The author/artist Masashi Kishimoto has newly drawn it for eOneBook! The gold foil stamp imparts a luxurious finish to the special cover. Cool, isn't it?
We’re 100% sure that all Naruto fans will love it!
Naruto eOneBook consists of a book-like digital reader and 'Naruto' special pack (Naruto cassette + Naruto special dust jacket). Insert the Naruto cassette into the card slot of eOneBook device and start reading.
Do not miss this chance to get your hands on the complete Naruto series with the new digital manga format -- the eOneBook reader!
Comments from eOneBook customers
"I fiddled with it for a quick first impression, and let me say, I am BEYOND impressed with the final product! I was skeptical about the length at which you guys pursued emulating the weight and feel of paper, but after holding it in my hand (and a now long time tablet user) it makes ALL the difference in the world (seriously, how will I got back to my flimsy tablet!?)" - a Kickstarter backer
"Congratulations on producing not only an amazing product, but running a fantastic Kickstarter as well! The e-book is amazing in all aspects. I'm so impressed with what you guys did and think this was well worth the price. I'll be sure to support any future endeavors you guys decide to take on!" - a Kickstarter backer
"I received the book today. Absolutely perfect and top quality product that I have been expecting from Japan!! It brought back so much of my childhood memories as I have been a Hokuto no Ken fan for over 30 years. Please keep them coming!" - a Kickstarter backer
"This can revolutionize Manga reading. They can go so many directions like create a Western comic scale version, add SD card port for swappable manga series, make an eOneBook that supports full color. This product is sound as it, but the room for expansion is wide. Great job Progress Technologies, I'm very happy with this product and it was worth the wait. :)" - a Kickstarter backer
"Just got my product now. It's unlike any manga I have ever read. The book is lighter than I thought it would be, and the pages are crystal clear. Very revolutionary." - a Kickstarter backer
"I'm reading 'Fist of the North Star' eOneBook after I got home. It features a double screen that allows sequential art to be shown and has the thickness and the tactile feel of paper like an actual book. I was not fully satisfied with reading manga on Kindle. It made me feel like being on a low carb diet. I was surprised that I didn’t feel that way when I read on eOneBook. I realized that my past reading experience would have more influence than I thought." - a Kickstarter backer
"First of all, the jacket is extremely cool. I think it’s worth the price. eOneBook is wonderful because it replicates a paper-like texture and displays crisp text and detailed graphics." - a customer of Naruto eOneBook in Japanese
"I felt like I was reading a paper manga. Since eOneBook was designed to mimic as close as possible the paper color and ink, I feel comfortable to read. When I literally held the book, I realized that it had been carefully developed. I'll cherish it." - a customer of Naruto eOneBook in Japanese
Comments from manga authors
"In conclusion, as of December 2018, it's definitely the most beautiful and the most comfortable e-book. It's the best, not one of the best. Whether it’s worth the price or not depends on an individual decision." - Riichiro Inagaki, a Japanese manga writer known for 'Eyeshield 21' and 'Dr. Stone'
"When I showed the eOneBook to Saito Takao sensei, he said that he would really like to publish his work in the format. He shared his thoughts; ‘This is the direction that I wanted digital manga to go. For manga artists who draw their art with lines, its crisp screen would test their abilities. This is a new type of book that can develop artists.’
The eOneBook is on a different level from other digital readers. It can portray the uneven black paint and the touch of the brush. If we use the original artwork data, we can see the subtle stroke of the brush on the screen." - Yasuhiro Yamauchi, The administration officer, Saito Takao Gekiga Cultural Foundation

Design & Development
We have been offering technical services in design development process to major manufacturers in Japan. By combining our cultivated technologies, we are taking on the challenge of creating our original products.
Screen tuning specialized for manga
The most distinctive feature of eOneBook is its ultra high-resolution image quality. We focused to enhance the resolution so that the device can display lines as fine as possible.
It was so hard to display the artistic drawings on electronic paper with the fidelity of printed books. When we tried to display them in detail, page turns took more time and really frustrated us. By taking these technical constraints into consideration, our dedicated manga reader is focused on portraying the high resolution drawings. It is fine-tuned to strike a balance between ultra-high image quality and seamless page turns.
In addition, Naruto eOneBook is completely different from the current eBook. It has original artwork data which is about 300MB in size per volume of manga books. With specially tuned contrast, sharpness, and detailed line, eOneBook portrays the drawings created by manga artists as beautifully as those seen in printed manga.
eOneBook will deliver the world of Naruto to you in the highest quality.
Test & Validation
Developing an electronic device enclosed in a paper casing was an unprecedented and tough challenge. We struggled with providing both the strength of the product as an electronic device and the same tactile feel of paper books.
We created and evaluated dozens of different prototypes, ensuring product durability and safety.
Manufacturing & Supply Chain
We have been developing eOneBook with great partners offering trusted “Japan Quality.” Thanks to every partners who have been contributing this challenge from the initial prototyping phase, eOneBook – difficult but exciting product – is going to be brought to life. Without them, none of this would have been possible.
PROGRESS TECHNOLOGIES is a passionate and highly skilled team of engineers. With the strong background of engineering, we are conducting product development from planning to manufacturing stage. Our goal is to create products that offer new experiences for customers.
We enhance your manga experience.
eOneBook provides an innovative reading experience to manga fans around the world by crossing the power of manga, the latest technology in ink display screens, and MADE IN JAPAN quality. Manga is an important part of Japanese culture, and we are proud of it. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.
We really appreciate your support, and we hope you enjoy your favorite manga to the fullest.
Risks and challenges
In our previous Kickstarter campaign, we were able to deliver the rewards to our backers on schedule. Moreover, we received praise from them for the level of completion of eOneBook and the reading experience it provided.
However, producing innovative products is never easy. It carries risks. To minimize the risks, we have been evaluating multiple different prototypes with our trusted manufacturing partners.
Our team has a strong background in product development and engineering. We have been offering technical services in the design development process to major manufacturers for over a decade in Japan. Having highly skilled engineers in the mechanical, electronic, and software fields, we can conduct the development of products from planning to manufacturing.
With the experience of our previous Kickstarter, we are confident that we will deliver the rewards to you from December 2019 to January 2020. While we do not expect any changes in the manufacturing timeline, shipping date, or something else, that possibility does exist. If it happens, we promise to communicate honestly with you and try our best to solve the problem.
Some overseas customers may be required to pay for customs in order to receive the product sent from Japan. You will be responsible for the payment of such fees.
